My Sister, My Love
My Sister, My Love | Joyce Carol Oates
2 posts | 9 read | 13 to read
New York Times bestselling author of The Falls, Blonde, and We Were the Mulvaneys, Joyce Carol Oates returns with a dark, wry, satirical taleinspired by an unsolved American true-crime mystery. "Dysfunctional families are all alike. Ditto 'survivors.'" So begins the unexpurgated first-person narrative of nineteen-year-old Skyler Rampike, the only surviving child of an "infamous" American family. A decade ago the Rampikes were destroyed by the murder of Skyler's six-year-old ice-skating champion sister, Bliss, and the media scrutiny that followed. Part investigation into the unsolved murder; part elegy for the lost Bliss and for Skyler's own lost childhood; and part corrosively funny expos of the pretensions of upper-middle-class American suburbia, this captivating novel explores with unexpected sympathy and subtlety the intimate lives of those who dwell in Tabloid Hell. Likely to be Joyce Carol Oates's most controversial novel to date, as well as her most boldly satirical, this unconventional work of fiction is sure to be recognized as a classic exploration of the tragic interface between private life and the perilous life of "celebrity." In My Sister, My Love: The Intimate Story of Skyler Rampike, the incomparable Oates once again mines the depths of the sinister yet comic malaise at the heart of our contemporary culture.

This is the fictionalized account of the JonBenet Ramsey murder. Bliss Rampike is a young figure skater with a bright future when she is found dead. This is the story, as told by her older brother, Skyler Rampike.

I absolutely loved this book. I can vividly remember reading it back in 2009 and just wanting to devour it.

Cinfhen Ooooh, sounds scandalous!!!! #stacking 6y
Kaye I never knew this was based on the Ramseys. 6y

merelybookish My daughter recently fell down this rabbit hole. She has questions!! And theories. (She is 12. 😃) I assume this book meant for someone older? 6y
arubabookwoman I loved this one too. 6y
Meredith3 Omg how have I never heard of this?! Must read! 6y
Reviewsbylola I think I gave it to you or @annied for Christmas. @Meredith3 6y
Reviewsbylola It is, but she might be ready for it soon! There‘s not any graphic violence or sex (at least that I remember. It‘s been years. 😂) @merelybookish 6y
Reviewsbylola IKR?!? Yes please! @Hehaney 6y
emilyhaldi Should that be my next JCO?? 🤔 I was only “meh” about Blonde.. and I see this one is also a bit of a chunkster!! 6y
emilyhaldi @merelybookish I would like to hear your daughters theories. I was 12 when this story was all over newsstands (particularly National Enquirer) and I still go down this rabbit hole sometimes 🤦🏻‍♀️ It makes me CRAZY that we still don't have an answer!!! 😩 6y
Reviewsbylola Not only do we still not have an answer but I also don‘t even know how I really feel! Sometimes I‘m convinced John and Patsy had absolutely NOTHING to do with it and sometimes I‘m like well, something is super fishy about this case, so maybe it‘s them. @emilyhaldi 6y
Reviewsbylola And yes @emilyhaldi try this one!!! 6y
emilyhaldi @Reviewsbylola I have no@idea what I think either 😩😩😩although... It really does seem likely that whatever happened involved family member. Which is so hard to fathom, but... 6y
BarbaraBB Too bad it‘s written by Oates. Her writing can be sooo annoying - imo 😉 6y
BarbaraBB I‘ll go Google the murder now though...😂 6y
Mdargusch Never heard of this! 6y

I am so excited! My sister JoAnn is on her way here from Florida for a 5 day visit! She is my book buddy, we have been reading side by side since childhood. She was supposed to be here an hour ago but her flight was delayed. I only live 20 minutes from the airport, so I'll be leaving in a little under an hour to pick her up (she now lands at 10). Wait till she sees how many more books I've bought since she was here last summer. It's staggering. 😁

erinreads Hope you have a great time together! 8y
