The heart-stopping new book in the Cormac Reilly series, by the bestselling author of THE RUIN and THE SCHOLAR. When Peter Fisher is called to the scene of a supposed prank call, his annoyance turns to terror when he realises this is no joke. A young boy says he witnessed a little girl being bundled into the boot of a car, and Peter believes him. DI Cormac Reilly and Peter search frantically for answers, but find obstacles put in their way by the one person who should be helping them: Superintendent Bryan Murphy. Frustrated and severely short-staffed, Peter and Cormac are pushed to breaking point, resulting in a fatal mistake. Cormac is suspended from duty and Peter is banished to a tiny town on the West Coast of Ireland, where's he's tasked with doing the paperwork in a murder investigation that's supposed to have been resolved. But something isn't adding up, including the mysterious appearance of a young woman and her nine-year-old daughter, who hasn't spoke a word in months . . .

Despite an intriguing start, I didn‘t love this one as much as The Scholar, which was great. But once I settled into the story it kept my interest. Cormac Reilly is a great character for a detective series. And Peter, a secondary character in the previous book, took more spotlight in this one so there were a few cases happening at once. I‘m interested to see where this series goes now. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator is great.

I didn‘t like this one quite as much as the previous two, but I still love the characters and the style. The politics and in-fighting in this one just made me too mad to fully enjoy it. I still look forward to more in the series though!

Another “unputdownable” crime novel that continues the story of Irish Detective Cormac Reilly.
Imagine this ..it‘s really cold, a child is kidnapped, several strange deaths have occurred in a small Irish village and throw in some police corruption..this is a great series...I will be waiting for the next instalment 😍

TrishB I have a couple of these but not started any yet! I guess I need too. 4y

Finished the third book in the Cormac Reilly series in a few hours. Go me! It‘s not in my top three crime fiction series, but they‘re still a good read, especially as she‘s an expat Irish now living in Perth. If you can find it, I highly recommend her Facebook live chat with Karin Slaughter, it was like watching gossiping crime buffs🔪After a debacle involving a missing girl & a dead suspect, Cormac is caught up in a drugs & corruption scandal.

Early on I was thinking I wasn't in the right frame of mind to deal with this subject matter and I was about to bail, but I decided to press on to the 100 page mark and I'm very glad I did. The story veered away into something I was much more comfortable with. It's a real page turner, great characters, lots of strands to the mystery and plenty of twists and turns. Also much better written than a lot of these sorts of books. #BookspinBingo

Ruthiella This a reminder that it‘s sometimes good to press on with a book! 😀 4y

CarolynM @Ruthiella Yes, very true. In this case I thought it was probably going to be a good book - I liked the writing - I just wasn't sure I was in the right frame of mind to deal with where I thought the story was heading. 4y

I think Goodreads' algorithm broke...?? 🤣🤣🤣

(The Good Turn is the third installment in an excellent gritty Irish mystery series. I had to take a break from it, because I can't handle the intensity right now... and Goodreads helpfully suggested Ivy and Bean instead?)

CarolynM I'm about to read The Good Turn for my IRL book group. I hope it's not too hard to deal with, I'm a wuss😬😶 4y
howjessicareads @CarolynM — It‘s not that bad. I just literally cannot handle any suspense right now. I‘ve been reading almost all romances, for their predictability. 🤪🤪 4y

Forgot to take a pic on my audio walk yesterday morning but here is 1 from our evening beach walk. The weather here has been gorgeous these Easter hols. The book has grabbed me straight away. The child in the story is called Matilda & that‘s my Tilly on the left. She is 9 & only likes school as it‘s a way of spending time with her friends. She loves animals & once tried to resuscitate a long dead lizard by blowing into its mouth with a straw! 🤮

Itchyfeetreader Lovely photo you all look like you are having a lovely time 5y
Cuilin @LapReader wonderful picture. I have two daughters too. How great that the weather is lovely for a beach walk. 🌊 5y

My concentration not the best right now so this took me a while to read. I enjoyed it. Still think her first is the best. I enjoyed the development of her main characters and look forward to the next book. Long may she write this series.

Bk2 in my #FebruaryBookHaul is the 3rd in the Cormac Reilly series, and is another signed book. Set in Galway, Ireland, Detective Reilly is dealing with enemies at work & problems are home. Then he has to work a child abduction with a severely understaffed team and things go from bad to worse in a heartbeat. I loved the first two books and this one has good reviews and is turning into another must read like Karin Slaughter & Co.
