Alright, listen…This manga is comfort food for my brain. Don‘t come at me. Tohru Honda is a recently-orphaned high school student. Through some shenanigans, she discovers that the Prince of her school, Yuki Sohma, and his family are hiding a secret: They are each possessed by a spirit of the zodiac and when hugged by a member of the opposite sex, they transform into that animal. A surprisingly deep, fluffy, fun manga. I‘m gonna marry Hatori..🤣

tokorowilliamwallace I loved this anime more than a decade ago! And I do think I found some volumes of the manga in Japanese from an Osaka manga shop, as well as Super Mario, and maybe some Azumanga Daioh! They were supposed to aid in my learning the language, too---fun source material to practice with. 3y
AshleyHoss820 @tokorowilliamwallace That‘s not a bad idea! I may have to try that! My other favorite animes are Bleach and Inuyasha. The spring semester begins on Monday, so I picked the entire series of Fruits Basket up at the library to calm my brain! ☺️ 3y
tokorowilliamwallace @AshleyHoss820 O.o What's your course of study? I love hearing about college studies. 3y
AshleyHoss820 @tokorowilliamwallace I‘m close to a bachelors of education with a 7-12 (grade) English subject endorsement. ☺️ 3y

Easy morning manga reading after a night of ministry and very little sleep. I love this ministry of presence as a chaplain at the hospital. ❤️

The conscience is something that develops, like our bodies. It‘s our heart that grows inside of us. She said that‘s why there are different forms of kindness, depending on the person. Everyone has desires from the moment they are born so that‘s easy to understand. But kindness is something that each person has to craft for themselves. It‘s easily misinterpreted or taken for hypocrisy.

I'm really excited about a graphic novel/manga group! I only have 1 unread graphic novel in my house and it's too big to ship, so I hope it's okay to offer up a manga selection. These are all first volumes. If none of these work, I can always run over to my local used bookstore and see what else they have. #LMPBC #Round6 #GroupU
I'll tag the other two in the comments.

LibrarianRyan Fruits basket is a classic, and part of what really started Manga here in the US. There were some really key series that brought Manga from back gaming rooms to store fronts and libraries. Vol 1 can be hard to find, so I vote for this. I've read some, but they were all way down the series line like volume 18 or so. 6y

TheBookHippie It‘s fine by me!! 6y
bibliobard I would prefer Inubaka! I have read Fruits Basket a number of times and while I love it, I am not sure I would have much to add in terms of discussion. 6y
DGRachel I had no idea that Vol 1 Fruits Basket is hard to find! I am super happy, then, that I got my hands on it. How about this, since I'd prefer no one had to reread unless they wanted to - Inubaka is short - why don't I send both and then you can chose to read either on or both depending on your schedule. Would that work? @LibrarianRyan @Shakespearience @TheBookHippie 6y
bibliobard @DGRachel that works for me. Most manga is pretty quick to read anyway. 6y
LibrarianRyan @DGRachel I can read the Inubaka. To be honest I don't know if Fruits basket is still hard to find (I haven't looked) but when I was still a public librarian it was. So choose what ever is best for the group. I can do anything. 😁 6y
TheBookHippie @DGRachel works good for me!!! 6y
bullbunny @LibrarianRyan I don't think it is with the Collectors Edition have 2 manga's in one 6y
bullbunny Fruitd Basket is my favorite so happy they rebooted the anime too ^^ 6y
DGRachel @bullbunny I saw something about the anime, which is why I really want to get this off my TBR and onto my Read pile! 6y
bullbunny @DGRachel they're doing the whole manga series. So you have time to read and then watch ^^ 6y
Serotonin Inubaka and Her Majesty‘s Dog...I haven‘t seen those titles in a while. Good picks! 👍 5y

Day 24 #sisforseptember is from a favorite manga series, Fruits Basket, which has a bunch of kids from high #school, several of which have a curse that has them turning into the animals of the Chinese zodiac if they're hugged by the opposite sex. And of course, there's a cute little girl that the male zodiac animals all have a crush on. It's cute and a lot of fun.
@CaliforniaCay

jmofo I would totally hug a dude-type if I got to be a sheep or goat. (edited) 6y
madamereadsalot1 @jmofo lol! 😂 I think I'd wanna be the tiger or monkey. 6y

This is my all time favorite series, and i am so thankful to have it again. When they re-released it as collectors editions.
Tohru Honda is living in a tent, in the woods, after loosing her mother. But that doesn't let that bother her, or feel the need to trouble her friends, with her troubles.
But when she comes across the most popular boy in school Yuki Sohma! Outside her tent. Is it for the best?
Collection is complete

🐭 Artwork is beautiful!
🐭 Story‘s unique from most things I‘ve read within shōjo.
🐭 Each character is multi-layered & it helps to build a fully fleshed out story.
🐭 Romance doesn‘t monopolise the foundation of the narrative, which is fantastic.
🐭Tohru Honda is a very likeable character; her empathy & compassion is lovely.
🐭The humour is glorious & quite laugh-out-loud
🐭I enjoyed taking my time & savouring every page of every chapter.
🐭5/5

8leagueboot We should all be a little more like Tohru Honda ❤🦄 7y

While I have fond memories of Fruits Basket, re-reading over a decade later I find it frustrating and boring.

It adheres to all the Shojo tropes and offers very little of interest. The humour is either lost in translation or just not very good. I'm really not it's target audience. Not anymore.

Unless you love shojo, I'd give this one a skip.

Went to Barnes and Noble and found they reprinted the first manga I became obsessed with. So of course I had to get it. It's a straight up classic.

When I was younger, I found a few copies of Fruits Basket in the public library but I never actually owned them myself. I read a few of the manga and absolutely loved them. As you can imagine, I was very heartbroken when they were removed from the library with no intention to get them back again. I was so excited when they bought out a collector‘s edition! Fruits Basket was a little slower to start than I had anticipated, but you can sense early on that it will be a series that ends up being much more than what it seems. It shines in those cut scene moments where the characters are thinking deeply about the changes they want to make in their lives

About a third of the way through this for #24in48. The translation is completely different from what was originally published in the US (and I'm loving it). Sadly though none of the authors silly notes from the volumes are included (but that's okay).
