Selected Poems of Wendell Berry
Selected Poems of Wendell Berry | Wendell Berry
12 posts | 1 read | 6 to read
The Selected Poems of Wendell Berry gathers one hundred poems written between 1957 and 1996. Chosen by the author, these pieces have been selected from each of nine previously published collections. The rich work in this volume reflects the development of Berry s poetic sensibility over four decades. Focusing on themes that have occupied his work for years--land and nature, family and community, tradition as the groundwork for life and culture-- The Selected Poems of Wendell Berry celebrates the broad range of this vital and transforming poet."

Thank you @FantasyChick for the perfect #Joloabokaflodswap parcel. I'm so pleased to finally have a collection of Berry's poetry!
It's been a busy day complicated by a major power outage in our area. We have a generator, thank goodness, but power could be out for days. All to say, chocolate & a book is exactly what I need right now.
Merry Christmas to all who celebrate!
And thanks to @MaleficentBookDragon for being the maven of Litsy swaps!

batsy Oh no! Hope the power is restored soon. Take care and stay warm 💕 1y
LeahBergen Yikes! Stay warm. Sending ❤️❤️❤️. 1y
FantasyChick You are so welcome! I hope it helped get you through the storm. It was definitely a bad one. I'm not overly thrilled with all the snow that came our way today right on its heels either. Hope you had a great holiday! 1y
merelybookish @FantasyChick Winter in the Maritimes. 😬 I hope you're enjoying the holiday season in spite of the weather! 1y

Happy 87th birthday, Wendell Berry.

Scochrane26 I love him. I‘m hoping to see him again if they have the Ky book fair this year. 3y
TheSpineView Beautiful poem! 💚💚💚 3y
PhyllisH @Scochrane26 That‘s great! I‘m from Kentucky, but currently live in Alabama. Have you ever seen Silas House at the Kentucky book fair? He‘s one of my favorite authors. 3y

PhyllisH @TheSpineView I agree😃💚 3y
Scochrane26 @PhyllisH Yes, I love Silas House, too. I‘ve met him a couple of times & love to listen to his accent. Ive been fortunate to meet a lot of our regional authors. 3y
PhyllisH @Scochrane26 Awesome! I also love his accent. I wish he would narrate all his Audible books. 3y

#poetryMatters Stream

I got to know this poem when constant upheaval first shattered our normalcy here. These lines gave me strength and hope to see through these trying times

"It may be that when
we no longer know what to do
we have come to our real work,
and that when we no longer know
which way to go
we have come to our real journey.
The mind that is not baffled is not employed.
The impeded stream is the one that sings."

~Wendell Berry

TheSpineView It is a great poem. ❤❤❤ 4y

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children‘s lives may be,I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light.

TheBookHippie For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Scochrane26 This seems to be his most famous poem. 4y

TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I have always loved this one. Could be his most famous. 4y
TheBookHippie @Scochrane26 I think it may be. 4y
GingerAntics He‘s on my nature poetry wish list. I may have to move him up the list a bit. 4y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics 🤣👏🏼❤️ you‘ll get addicted to poetry like me 🙃 (edited) 4y
GingerAntics I think I have to an extent. I‘m chomping at the bit to read the next two Nikita Gill books of poetry. I‘m not a fan of Billy Collins, in the least. I think that‘s going to end up DNF‘d. I‘m enjoying other poets too much to spend tying forcing my way through it. I even feel like Whitman in bite sized chunks would make some sense, now. 4y

One of my fave days of the year is coming up on Nov 16th—my annual day to fangirl over authors, especially the revered Wendell Berry. Thought I‘d share for those of you within driving distance of central KY. Tons of authors this yr, & while Mitch McConnell “co-authored” a book, he won‘t be there to ruin my day. Authors that will be there include: Gwenda Bond, David Arnold, Tiffany Reisz, Andrew Shaffer, Casey Cep, Kerry Winfrey, Adrian Matejka.

Megabooks I don‘t think I‘ll be ready to be up all day by then, but if I am, I‘d love to meet up! I‘ll just have to play it by ear with the spinal fusion. 4y
Scochrane26 @megabooks I‘m excited this year-there‘s some I wish were going to be there but didn‘t have books out this time. But, there‘s so many, I‘m going to have to make a list & save $. I think they‘ve expanded from ky authors. Maybe if you can‘t make it this time, you can go next yr! 4y

1/52 Word for Word | The Peace of Wild Things by Wendell Berry

I've started a new photo project: take one photo each week of 2017 inspired by a quote/poem.
I'd post the poem The Peace of Wild Things here but it's too many characters (c'mon Litsy, give us more!)
It's lovely and worthy of taking a moment to look it up if you're interested in reading it.
