Balmoral
Balmoral: Queen Victoria's Highland Home | Ronald Clark
1 post
First published in 1981, this is Ronald Clark's engagingly readable account of Queen Victoria's relationship with "Our dear Balmoral" and the life that went on there. The biography of Balmoral begins with the first visit to Scotland of the young Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert in 1842. Five years later, while bad weather envelops the Royal party in western Scotland, the son of the Queen's physician, convalescing in Old Balmoral, reports blazing sunshine from Upper Deeside. The death of his host shortly afterwards opens the way for the Royal acquisition of the Balmoral estate and the building of the new Castle in 1853-55. In the period up to Albert's death in 1861 Balmoral becomes the setting for many of the Royal couple's happiest moments as they revel in the beauties of the scenery, relish the picturesque pageantry of Highland life, enjoy their incognito expeditions into the surrounding country, and - in Albert's case - discover a passionate enthusiasm for deer-stalking. After the Prince Consort's death Balmoral becomes a mausoleum of memories, but also a source of strength enabling the Queen to survive her devastating loss. About the time of the Golden Jubilee of 1887 there is an Indian summer, with members of the Queen's extensive family rallying round and dances and entertainments displacing some of the black-crepe gloom. In 1896 there is the colorful visit of the Tsar, with his wife and daughter. The closing section links Victorian Balmoral with the life of the Castle today.

Today out Scottish tour takes us from the East Coast into the Cairngorms, via Balmoral Castle, Braemar, Aviemore and then onto Inverness. Photographs never do the mountains justice. Tomorrow we head on further north towards John O‘Groats, watch out for Hamish MacBeth on route.

How has your day today been? Good? Bad? Or just routine? How are you getting through all this? For me being a stress day as further challenges were put on us.

TheSpineView Another beautiful spring day here! Doing well and staying positive! 4y
Birdsong28 I am good thanks how are you doing? I have started to use my step ladder to do some exercise whilst waiting for the kettle to boil, stepping on and off the bottom step. Did we see the queen whilst on our tour? 👑👸 Carried on with reading in the garden today and got sunburnt! But it was worth it as was so nice. 📚📖 4y

Andrew65 @TheSpineView The weather does make such a difference to our moods, even or especially in this situation. A lovely Spring day here too. 4y
TrishB Hope you manage to catch a break soon Andrew. I‘ve been away from the work/home office today. Have read a book and now having a glass of wine and social distancing from my work phone. 4y
TheBookHippie Making goulash ! Sun was out it‘s still cold but SUN! Still extremely high numbers here... we are number 3 in the nation 😭 sorry you have new stress... we are off school til Monday the little breather of lessons is good. 4y
Andrew65 @Birdsong28 A lovely set of days, no Queen, but think we saw Prince Charles peeping out the window following his self-isolation. One of those stressy days for me with more challenges thrown at us by National and Local Government. I wonder if they know how many issues are involved when they do those one liners on the podiums. Great originality with your exercise regime. I did laps in the garden stamping on the dandelion heads before they seed. 🤣 4y
Andrew65 @TrishB Sounds great and you need to social distance from the phone. Hard to get a break at moment with new challenges every day. Hoping to get a bit of a break next week whilst one of the acting deputies takes on my role, although still will be there for the 2.00 daily leadership meetings, video conferencing of course, and any other issues because daily emails come into my inbox. So won‘t be a total break. 4y
jb72 Wonderful pictures! I love seeing them. My day has been lazy and quiet. It was supposed to rain but so far it‘s been a nice sunny and breezy day. I watched a few videos on The Louvre. I hope your stress eases up @Andrew65 4y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie Just has spaghetti Bolognese, Yep still got some spaghetti and pasta. Not recently bought mind! Schools are closed here but half staff on duty each week for the two weeks holiday and will be communicating with children and parents over the two weeks including the two Bank Holidays. Making sure staff still get two weeks off, as half staff alternating weeks over the next four weeks. 4y
robinb Hang in there, my friend. Remember...you‘re a #60sbaby...you‘re tough! 😊👍🤗😉🤣 (edited) 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 This is so cool. Want to see Scotland in IRL. Take care, Andrew💫 4y
Andrew65 @jb72 It will until the next email from the LA or staff 🤣 Nature of the job! Someone needs to be there at all times for staff, and oh that‘s usually me! 😳🤔🤪🤣 Had to rely on internet for sone of these pictures. Sun does help so much. Could do with some real sea, but whilst travel not allowed that won‘t happen. Feels like Groundhog Day at the moment. 4y
Andrew65 @robinb we are indeed! Just as well isn‘t it. Loving the avatar! Hope you are well Robin. 🥰 4y
Andrew65 @JanuarieTimewalker13 Thanks will do, this is fun to put together. Perhaps we should take on Ireland next, never been there but we do have the internet! 4y
robinb @Andrew65 I am, thanks. It‘s a lovely warm day here in Alabama but expecting storms tonight. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y
Prairiegirl_reading Woke up to a nice sunny morning, by noon we were basically having a blizzard and now it‘s sunny and the snow that fell has melted. April in Manitoba! Settling to working from home although tons of technological glitches are making things frustrating. On the bright side I have a job and I don‘t have to commute. I certainly haven‘t done any reading but looking forward to the weekend for that! 😄 4y
Andrew65 @robinb Obviously can‘t have one without the other. Love the avatar! 4y
Ms_T Hi Andrew! Love the photos 😍 Today has been fine. I feel the new procedures and processes are becoming second nature now. I‘m worried though that the traffic seems to be creeping up in numbers again. Personally, I‘ve definitely got my reading mojo back, with a kindle book and audiobook on the go right now. Both are really good too! How are things with you? 4y
robinb @Andrew65 so true! Thanks! I decided robin eggs were somehow appropriate for me. 🤣🤣🤣 Plus, that color! 💙 4y
Andrew65 @Prairiegirl_reading I‘m trying to get reading going again, and finally succeeding so that can escape from this madness. 🤯 4y
Andrew65 @robinb Gorgeous! (edited) 4y
Andrew65 @Ms_T Rather like you, got into a swing and routine now. On plus side without the commute I sneak an extra hour in bed! That‘s the problem as time goes on people push it further when they hear positive message about green shoots! But what some don‘t get is there may be some green shoots but that is at the same time the virus is at its peak out there. Please that I‘ve got the reading going again, and getting used to the daily challenges from LA. 4y
EadieB Having a good day today. Got pork roast, potatoes, carrots & onions in the crock pot. Decided to have spaghetti & sausage when we can get pasta sauce. Had garlic, butter & olive oil last week.
Husband decided not to go to post office anymore so I bought postage online & put 4 books in my mailbox and the mail person just picked them up.
Love the Balmoral pictures as I know that is an escape place for the Royals when visiting Scotland.
4y
Andrew65 @EadieB I love the way you can do mail. We can‘t do that over here, and even for letters have to find a post box. A good 5 - 10 minute work from your house. Your husband sounds very sensible! We usually stay quite stacked up on things like pasta, toilet roll so plenty in, most probably got enough for at least two months if not most probably longer. Was expecting something bigger than when I saw it fir real. Queen Victoria‘s favourite. 4y
BeansPage Andrew I'm sorry I haven't been posting for the past few days. I'm trying to stay off of social media because it's just too much for me to handle right now. But I'm here and I'm okay. 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 Ireland would be nice to visit virtually but I would also like to see some England/Wales pictures too. Sorry to hear you are still have work demands put on you. Glad to hear today that Boris has still escaped the ventilator. Also able to still be involved from his bed.
A beautiful sunny day her too. The sun certainly does feel good. I still haven't received my next delivery date from the grocery store. More people are doing online.

JacqMac I have achieved almost nothing today. I did shower and put on clothes. lol Being an introvert, I‘m really missing some quiet time. I know lots of people are trapped home alone, so I hate to complain about it, but the constant noise and activity really isn‘t helping my anxiety. I‘d love just an hour to myself with no noises in the background. There‘s just always someone there. I might need to build myself a fort. lol 4y
Andrew65 @SumisBooks Lovely to hear from you, and the most important thing is you are okay. Things at the moment can be so overwhelming so take pressure off yourself! Always here for you via Litsy or email. 🥰 Take Care. 😘 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB Hopefully positive signs. 🤞 Big issue for him I think is trying to work and control things whilst he was too ill to do it. Last Thursday night out clapping for the NHS when he looked ghastly ill! Government is missing his driving force and powerful personality, boys and men come to mind. All part of daily life where my job is concerned, usually handle it in the long run. 4y
Andrew65 @JacqMac That‘s the problem with families and introverts, hard to find some quiet me time and builds up anxiety. Take care. 😍 4y
JacqMac @SumisBooks 👋 Glad you‘re ok. 💕 4y
CocoReads It‘s a lovely spring day here, and I‘m loving the Scotland pictures. Worked today—and it wasn‘t too bad. All this seems like a new normal but the dismal news from our ID guy is that we will probably still be dealing with this through summer and into fall. But at the same time, who knows? Things seem to change day by day. 4y
Moray_Reads Loving your virtual tour. When you again get the chance to travel and venture in to Scotland may I recommend Ardfern, Kilchoan and Ardnamurchan as some of the most beautiful places in the world? I had a bad day yesterday but am feeling stronger today 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I need a few relaxing minutes of quiet in Braemar today. Work was an annoying stressful today. Lots of little tasks & calls, no answers, and nothing of importance got done. On the Covid front, the NJ state Governor issued a mandate that even shoppers need masks or face coverings in stores. I get claustrophobic breathing my own hot, moist air and they bother me so I touch my face even more. Not good! Hope my guy will volunteer to do it. 😫 4y
TheBookHippie @JacqMac I‘m with you!!! I need some alone quiet 😭 but it sounds so horribly selfish. If you make a sound proof fort please post instructions. 4y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks We found out today that our hours are being cut, but I‘m not complaining! I‘m just thankful to have a job! I‘m a single parent so it is scary! 🙏🏻for everyone ❤️❤️ 4y
Andrew65 @Moray_Reads Goid to hear you are feeling better today. 😊 Think we are all having bad days and not so bad days! Thanks fir those recommendations of places, adding them to my bucket list. I love Tongue in the sun too, heavenly beautiful! Thought virtual tour just gave everybody something positive to look forward to each day, and we need this at the moment! 4y
Andrew65 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Such massive changes to their personal circumstances for everyone! Sending love and best wishes to you. 🥰 4y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie Sure there must be one online somewhere. 🤣 4y
Andrew65 @CocoReads So hard to predict how things will turn out and how many months we will be dealing with this. Sun always helps. Please to hear work wasn‘t too bad. 4y
Andrew65 @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I‘ve been doing al, shopping due to my wife‘s underlying medical conditions, Banned her from going, although took no persuading. So fearful when you are out and about, especially those who try to invade your personal space. 😡 Think we could all do with that quiet time in Braemar! 4y
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick SAME!!! I had an anxiety attack ! 4y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie Take Care 🥰 4y
tracey38 Lovely day in the mid 80s today though I couldn't really enjoy it as I was inside my clinic all day, where it was freezing! 🥶 The number of cases here in my state are really increasing at a fast rate, which is scary. On a positive note, two of our NPs are buying us all pizza and salad for lunch Friday, which is really sweet. 4y
tracey38 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks wow, are they cutting hours by a lot? That's what I would be worried about. Big hugs for you! 😘💛 4y
CocoReads @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks that‘s the fear for us too—cut hours. It was part of the rational for yanking our raises. That way they don‘t have to cut hours but they have been cutting nursing hours. Especially the surgical nurses. 😬 4y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @CocoReads yes... many nurses are displaced right now... I‘m just thankful to be able to work 🙏🏻 idk what I would do if I couldn‘t... 4y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @tracey38 not a lot so far 🙏🏻🙏🏻 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Haha!! Yes!! Ireland! Maeve Binchy!! 4y
gradcat @Andrew65 I‘m here! Better late than never? I hope? Thanks again, Andrew...a million thanks for keeping us all entertained!! ♥️♥️♥️ 4y
margreads I am glad this day is done. A few days off is just what the doctor ordered 4y
kezzlou85 Sorry I missed this one last night. All okay here bar a migraine for myself. Not always easy to stay positive but trying for my girls at least. My eldest comes across as confident but she's actually really anxious. I'm proud of how well she's handling all this. 4y
Texreader Too little work yesterday to keep my mind occupied. So panic attack! Fortunately I got work rolling in late in the day so I‘ll be busy today! Take care of yourself!! 4y
Crazeedi Had a rough day yesterday, sorry I didn't get to post. I hope you are taking care of yourself Andrew. The photos are beautiful. I wish I were there right now 4y
IamIamIam I missed this too as I also had a crappy day. I am in LOVE with Balmoral Castle!!! What gorgeous photos! 4y
GHABI4ROSES @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I feel you on the single parenting, but I would not have it any other way. Grateful that you have work, sister‼️💪🏾⚔️🙏🏾😘 4y
Andrew65 @IamIamIam if you love Balmoral you‘ll love Dunrobin Castle on today‘s. So tough at the moment and can easily lead to some rough days, but as they say tomorrow is another. Sending positive thoughts. 4y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Sending positive thoughts, remember this too will pass. 😊👍 Taking myself as well as I can at the moment. Doing okay. 4y
Andrew65 @Texreader So easy to have those attacks and feelings at the moment. Sending positive thoughts. 🥰 We‘re here to support you. 4y
Andrew65 @kezzlou85 Love how you‘re proud of her. 🙌 Migraines stink and hope you‘ve got past it. 4y
Andrew65 @margreads Enjoy your days off. 😊👍 4y
Andrew65 @gradcat It is better late than never. Hope you are well. 🥰 4y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @GHABI4ROSES thank you dear!! Sending you love ❤️🙌🏻💪🏻🙏🏻 4y
GHABI4ROSES ❤️🙌🏾💪🏾🙏🏾 4y
DieAReader @TheBookHippie I guess it was a day for anxiety 🤨 I went for a walk & made it 2 1/2 blocks from home before the anxiety hit. Turned around, stopped for quick take-out (my favourite eats is a seasonal business that‘s open from mid March to thanksgiving I believe). It was a treat, I was prepared etc...Customers came & went & as orders were being picked up there were a few walk-ins that needed to be told to back up etc...One in particular 🤦🏻‍♀️🤬 4y
DieAReader @Andrew65 definitely Ireland!! These pics are a big highlight in my days 🥰 Keep then coming! Plz 😉💖 4y
TheBookHippie @SquidgetsRoom everyone I talked too had a bad anxiety day yesterday!!! I‘ve got to pick up curbside groceries today hoping most my order is there it‘s a crap shoot! Plus it snowed here yesterday! Hope you‘re day is better today!!! 4y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie It did seem a bad day for a lot of people. 4y
