Spooky and dark for a children's book but enjoyable to read. Though it is predictable, the storytelling is gripping and funny. It is about the life of four extraordinary kids who solve a murder mystery. It is about being unique and blending into the team. I enjoyed reading the series of unfortunate events and looking for a similar series, and here it is. 😻 #serieslove2024 #bookspinbingo @TheSpineview

This was so much fun! It was kinda dark and murder-y for a middle grade but that made it different from a lot of other middle grades. The mystery even kept me guessing and I freaking loved the "you make family" sentiment of the cast.

???
This was fine, but I never really connected to the characters as they were very one dimensional. The cast of "freaks" were standard issue for a house of oddities & wonders. Also, the 1930s time period wasn't very well established. The mystery was decent but overall this this was just an easy way to pass a few hours. There was some good artwork, such as the one shown.

TheAromaofBooks Great review! Always makes me sad when a book has a cool historical setting that doesn't really feel like the author embraced! 5y

Halfway through my #doublespin book this weekend. It's not bad, but not really connecting to any of the characters. @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks That's the way I'm feeling about my current read. It's interesting, but not enthralling. 5y

#YAWednesday

I haven‘t had a chance to read this yet- and I‘m not 100% sure it‘s YA (might be middle grade 🤔) but I‘ve heard amazing things. I own a copy just haven‘t had time to pick it up. I‘ll try and read it before school starts and give you feedback!

Drnkpnkprincess @TheFunkyBookworm : Lauren Oliver has other great #YA books too... this is a “mystery” or thriller with friendship themes book by her too (edited) 6y
TheFunkyBookworm I am ALL IN on this one! I love a good circus/carnival/freakshow Book!!!! Can‘t wait to check this out! Thank you for participating 🎉💜 6y

I enjoyed reading this but there are so many characters that I feel like I never really got to know them and care about them. The mystery was good and you get enough clues to figure out ‘who done it‘.

In a museum of curiosities in 1930's NY, four young orphan "freaks" try to solve a series of crimes in an attempt to save their home & keep their loved ones safe. Pippa, the mentalist; Thomas, the elastic boy; Sam the Strong; and Max, the knife-throwing girl make for an intriguing cast of characters, but I never felt like I got to know any of them very well. I wish there had been a little more heart to accompany the fabulous setting.

Love me some Lauren Oliver, but this just isn't sucking me in the way I thought it would. It feels like a not-quite-satisfying ripoff of Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events.

This was okay. I think it would be good for a pre-teen, but I'm a bit past my teens (ok..a couple of decades past even though my father has anointed me 'the perpetual teenager') and found it unremarkable.
