Queen of the South
Queen of the South | Arturo Perez-Reverte
20 posts | 27 read | 19 to read
From master of the intellectual thriller (Chicago Tribune) Arturo Prez-Reverte, The Queen of the South is a remarkable tale, spanning decades and continentsfrom the dusty streets of Mexico to the sparkling waters off the coast of Morocco, to the Strait of Gibraltar and Spainin a story encompassing sensuality and cruelty, love and betrayal, and life and death. This international bestseller inspired Queen of the South, the must-watch drama on USA Network starring Alice Braga as Teresa Mendoza. Few authors inspire the kind of passion that Arturo Prez-Reverte does. Reviewers, readers, and booksellers alike have embraced his fiction as the perfect blend of suspense and literary ambition. A global bestseller, he is one of the most admired and widely read authors in the world. And this stunning novel is his best yet. Teresa Mendoza's boyfriend is a drug smuggler who the narcos of Sinaloa, Mexico, call "the king of the short runway," because he can get a plane full of coke off the ground in three hundred yards. But in a ruthless business, life can be short, and Teresa even has a special cell phone that Guero gave her along with a dark warning. If that phone rings, it means he's dead, and she'd better run, because they're coming for her next. Then the call comes. In order to survive, she will have to say goodbye to the old Teresa, an innocent girl who once entrusted her life to a pinche narco smuggler. She will have to find inside herself a woman who is tough enough to inhabit a world as ugly and dangerous as that of the narcos-a woman she never before knew existed. Indeed, the woman who emerges will surprise even those who know her legend, that of the Queen of the South. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Teresa, the “Queen,” is just the girlfriend of a drug runner pilot in Mexico until he gets himself killed. Given an escape to #Spain, and a stint in prison, she and her prison-mate Patty enter the big business of running drugs themselves especially between Spain and Morocco. Oddly Teresa comes off a hero and the audience cheers for her. The novel is complex and exquisitely told. The level of detail of running drugs and the enemies it creates ⬇️

Texreader demonstrates the level of skill of this author and his research. The author is quite simply brilliant. This is a chunkster of a novel, so glad I fit it in this month for #foodandlit. 7mo

While this book is mostly about drug-running between Morocco and Spain, sometimes it becomes a love story with books

It took me awhile to get through this book. Not because I didn‘t like it, I just couldn‘t get distracted or I‘d get lost. It‘s nothing like the Netflix series, which I love, but it‘s still a great story about drug cartel Queen Teresa Mendoza.

Typical Iowa fall day. Shorts and a fire 😃 I‘m struggling through this book, but I‘m not giving up!!! It‘s not that I don‘t like it, it‘s just really hard to follow!!

Erinreadsthebooks I read that as “shots and a fire” and thought, ‘wow that‘s a big shot glass‘ 😂🙌 4y

I‘m obsessed with Netflix‘s The Queen of the South series. So when I discovered it was based on a book, of course I had to order that!!

Kind of plodding through this one. I'm not sure if the Spanish is too hard or the story just doesn't interest me (but I loved the Telemundo series that was made based on this book.)

Anitareads I loved this series but didn't know they were made based on a book ☺ 6y
Sace @Anitareads I saw the series first. I wish I had a copy of the book that wasn't a tie in. 6y

When it comes to #librosenespanol the biggest mistake I make is reading what I think I should be reading (more challenging, well-known author, classic, not translated from English) instead of what I want to read (not a challenge, children's book, translated from English.) In this case I feel like I *should* be reading La Reina del Sur for the author/challenge, but I'd rather be reading Luna for the cuteness but the Spanish is super easy.

@Clwojick

😔 None really. I'm in a slump. I blame Netflix.

Karkar Oh the big black hole of Netflix.....it is so dangerous! 7y

AlaMich I have a Netflix suggestion: Godless! It‘s a western and I am resolutely NOT a western girl. However. This show is amazing!! Incredible actors, beautiful cinematography, great story...❤️ 7y
Sace @BookishMarginalia I hope so! It's weird not to have a book that's got my attention. 7y
Sace @Karkar it is! Normally I can stay away. When I'm not on vacay I really tend to prioritize reading and quiet time. Right now I'm like "I've got all day, Netflix won't kill me." Then suddenly it's 8 hours later... 7y
Sace @4thhouseontheleft mainly I'm watching La Reina del Sur. We also watched the first episode of Dark and we liked it. 7y
Sace @AlaMich I think that one caught my eye too. My husband likes westerns. We'll have to check it out. 7y

A gritty, yet beautifully told story about a young Mexican girl's rise as the head of a dangerous drug empire. Have all the episodes of this tivoed. Worried the show won't be as good as the book (per usual!).

MrBook A bit belated, but welcome to @Litsy ! 8y
EKonrad @MrBook Thanks! Trying to build up my profile a little...seems I'm pretty far behind everyone else! 😬 Am loving the community though! 8y
