Such a creative way of telling the story of China‘s Boxer Movement, aka Society of Righteousness and Harmonious Fists and the Relief of Peking (battle.) I‘m looking forward to reading the companion book, Saints, to learn about the other side of history. Two sides to each story.
#Booked2022 ~ Set in China

Cinfhen Cool! Im not familiar with this event but curious to learn about it!! 2y
Cortg @Cinfhen I didn‘t know about it either. The Boxers were and anti-foreign, anti-Christian movement when colonists were moving into China. The book is a graphic novel and incorporates Chinese Mythology and Kung-Fu which I liked! 2y

Historical fiction graphic novel set during the Boxer rebellion in China, but with magic! I liked the martial arts and the Chinese spirits.

This graphic novel tells the story of Little Bao, a young man who takes part in the Boxer Rebellion. He wants to fight for China, oust the foreigners who are taking control of religion and the government, protect his family, but will he be able to live with the choices he makes? Great characters. Action packed. But probably not for middle grade kids since there is a lot of violence..

I have this, but (and you know what's coming next) I still haven't read it. 😂

TrishB We actually did this movement in history in school - which is a surprise as nearly everything was Anglo based!! 6y

Tanisha_A #DrowinginTBR. Also, I am interested to know what the boy bear is saying to the girl bear? 6y
batsy @TrishB I've only heard about it, but know nothing! It sounds super fascinating. 6y
batsy @Tanisha_A Those four words every girl bear wants to hear: "Any book you want" ? 6y

Aimeesue Saw a talk by Yang at the National Book Festival a couple years ago - such a fascinating, enthusiastic guy! His mission in life seems to be to get kids interested in reading. ❤️ 6y
Lindy It‘s a wonderful book. Do you have the companion book that looks at the rebellion from a different viewpoint? 6y
batsy @Aimeesue That's great! I'm even more excited about this :) 6y
batsy @Lindy Yes, I have that one too :) 6y
Lindy @batsy I put off reading them for too long simply because of the frowns on the covers. They are such a delight! Nuanced historical fiction. 6y
batsy @Lindy I know, from the covers I thought it wouldn't be my thing 🙂 But positive reviews on Litsy convinced me, so I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it! 6y
Lindy @batsy Another great thing about these is that they are engaging re-reads, so you get a lot of reading value out of them. 6y
batsy @Lindy 👍🏽 I don't own many graphic novels, but the ones I tend to buy tend to be nonfiction. So much interesting work. 6y
Suet624 I learned a lot from this book. 6y

Just as great as everyone says, albeit violent and with troubled (but I imagine accurate) gender dynamics. An exceptional window in a different time, place, and worldview. Starting the “next” one now!

Heideschrampf Love the illustration! 6y
UrsulaMonarch @Heideschrampf I did too, and then I was rewarded with the paired illustration I just posted from the “sequel “ 6y

4/5

I really enjoyed this graphic novel. I didn't expect the magical realism, or how incredibly sad this would be. It's one of those stories where the tragedy is mostly in the choices the characters make, and it's more heartbreaking for it.

This was a very interesting history of the Boxer Rebellion. US students (at least where I went to school) learn about this period of Chinese history only briefly, and of course the brutality that people lived through and experienced is glossed over in textbooks. I went ahead and borrowed Saints from my library right after I finished this!

ClairesReads Cool- I‘m looking forward to reading this one soon 7y

Once you accept that waking up at 4:30 am is the new normal for your body, it‘s not so bad. Enjoying this book while drinking my coffee under 5 blankets. -5 F degrees outside and pretty cold inside.

batsy I bought this one recently during a sale! Glad to know you're enjoying so far. 7y

Suet624 @minkyb the book or the weather? 7y
minkyb I guess both but was thinking about the weather! MA is freezing cold too. As long as I am lucky enough to be warm and inside I‘m good. 7y
Suet624 @minkyb I‘m struggling a bit trying to stay warm inside today. My heater can‘t seem to get above 64 degrees. 7y

5⭐️For a subject that I don't know too much about, I enjoyed this one. In school I don't remember too many details about the Boxer Rebellion, and it was interesting to read this from the point of view of a Boxer. Excited to read Saints next

LibrarianRyan Have you read this yet? 7y

I really don't know how to express what I feel about this duo, but I know that it was good. It was a very interesting look at both sides of a conflict that I really don't know much about, but I feel like the lesson can be applied to any similar situation. I love GLY and all he has done. These were no exception.

I can't decide if the arrow means that Master Big Belly punches Little Bao or if he is secretly an airbender. GLY did make the A:TLA graphic novels, after all 🤓😄

Excellent graphic novel about the Boxer Rebellion from the perspective of one of the rebels. I loved the colours and the moral ambiguity in this. Definitely pick it up if you're a graphic novel reader.

I really appreciated reading a novel about an anti-colonial rebellion, especially from the perspective of a resistance fighter. I'm glad it's a perspective the author explored, despite having said the resistance fighters resemble terrorists. Because of that comment, I don't think I'll read the companion graphic novel, which doesn't take on exactly the opposing viewpoint of the conflict (which would be the colonizer), but it's close enough.

Finally read this half of the Boxers and Saints duo. Just as good, this volume looks at the motivations of those defending China and Chinese traditions during the Boxer Rebellion. And now I really need to read both Monkey and Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

BekahB I need to read this duo. I love the graphic novels published by First Second! 8y
DreesReads @BekahB I will have to look into the publisher's other stuff! My 8th grader (in 4 weeks) loved these and demanded I read them too--he knew history-major me would love them too😜 8y
