The Seven Good Years
The Seven Good Years: A Memoir | Etgar Keret
25 posts | 28 read | 57 to read
A brilliant, life-affirming, and hilarious memoir from a genius (The New York Times) and master storyteller. The seven years between the birth of Etgar Kerets son and the death of his father were good years, though still full of reasons to worry. Lev is born in the midst of a terrorist attack. Etgars father gets cancer. The threat of constant war looms over their home and permeates daily life. What emerges from this dark reality is a series of sublimely absurd ruminations on everything from Etgars three-year-old sons impending military service to the terrorist mind-set behind Angry Birds. Theres Levs insistence that he is a cat, releasing him from any human responsibilities or rules. Etgars siblings, all very different people who have chosen radically divergent paths in life, come together after his fathers shivah to experience the grief and love that tie a family together forever. This wise, witty memoirEtgars first nonfiction book published in America, and told in his inimitable styleis full of wonder and life and love, poignant insights, and irrepressible humor.

Keret is hilarious and compassionate in this collection of personal essays. They cover the birth of his son, Israel - where the threats of terror attacks and war dominate daily life -, yoga, trips abroad to writers‘ festivals, the ‘death‘ of his sister and the real death of his father. A wonderful book with sharp insights and many strange but oh so funny moments.

Perfect read for a short flight. Thanks for the rec @Cinfhen I really enjoyed this collection of essays about the author‘s life in Israel with his wife and young son as well as his experiences traveling as an Israeli author. The essay about buying an apartment in Warsaw was particularly moving.

Cinfhen Safe travels!!! Glad you enjoyed- it‘s a bit dated but you definitely get a feel for the Israeli way of life 💙 2y
Blaire @Cinfhen would you mind sending me the contact of the driver in Jerusalem. My mom said that would be great to have. My email is blaire dot malkin at Gmail 2y

This one fell a bit flat for me. Etgar Keret gives the reader glimpses of his life as a writer and father through very short chapters that focus on very specific anecdotes. The fact that it was so fragmentary kept interrupting me from getting into the flow of the book and didn‘t allow me to feel like K was getting to know the author. I normally love fragmented narrative styles but it didn‘t work for me this time :(

Congrats to my dear friend @BarbaraBB on her 3 yr Litsyversary 🥳🥳🥳I‘m not entering the #ThinkLocalGiveaway as you‘ve shared SO MANY gifts with me already, but I wanted to offer 2 local books. Keret a columnist in Israel, shares glimpses of the ordinary and not so simple everyday life of living in the Middle East. Luckiest Girl Alive is set in my old neighborhood, Merion, PA ~ VERY DARK story, but I recognized so many local landmarks 🍕

Cinfhen Check @BarbaraBB page for giveaway details 🙌🏻💖🎉 4y
BarbaraBB These both sound awesome and speaking of gifts: I finally have an update on the package I posted on May 13: after weeks of transit it now has arrived in Israel. It might be in time for your birthday 🎂 🤞🏽❤️ 4y
Cinfhen Thanks so much @BarbaraBB xx 4y

I liked the concept of this one: a 'memoir' that is composed of short pieces over a span of seven years without any larger arc or continuity. Most memoirs have big stories to tell, but this form feels more conducive to appreciating smaller moments. But the pieces themselves seemed hit or miss. A lot of the humor fell flat for me: not sure if this was the humor itself or the translation.

I have this one on my TBR. Sounds fantastic. #7years #septemberdanes @Cinfhen @Kalalalatja

Cinfhen I read this last year, it was an honest account of one man‘s experience living in the often turbulent Middle East. It was written with humor & heart ❤️ I liked it. Great choice🙌🏻 6y

I know that this is a long quote but it captures Keret‘s voice so vividly. If you are still not familiar with his work, find his books, stat. He has this self-deprecating way about him that is so absurdly funny I find myself laughing uproariously aloud. His stories are short, distilled, condensed but oh-so-powerful. Plus his comedy is founded upon tragedy, so there is that perfect marriage right there as well. #LitWorld2018GB - Israel

There is something deeply poignant with the way Keret writes. One of the few who can make me both laugh and cry at the same time. I am only halfway through but I appreciate how he acknowledges how the Israel-Palestine conundrum has put him squarely in the zone of moral ambiguity, a daily intifada that makes him stammer and blush with full recognition that they are the Occupiers who happen to be supremely insecure &well-armed, often a deadly combo.

readinginthedark This sounds so good! Where is it primarily set? 7y
GatheringBooks @readinginthedark it is very good. setting is in israel. etgar keret is one of those secret serendipitous finds that needs to be shared with as many people as possible. i just had the good fortune of hearing him speak at the singapore writers festival and was just blown away. he is a born storyteller. 7y

#ReadingResolutions Day 26: My reading #Journey has taken me to Israel, thanks to #LitWorld2018GB - possibly my 26th country now, this year, if am not mistaken. I listened to Etgar Keret speak several times during the Singapore Writers Festival last year, and am laughing uproariously as I read some of his short stories here.

Completely blown away by Israeli filmmaker/novelist Etgar Keret. Just utterly inspired. This man is a veritable genius. Daughter and I watched a documentary made on his life and short stories last night. Brilliant. #SWF2017

#NovemberByTheNumbers Didn't need my GoodReads today, was able to think of two books from my shelves with the #7 🤓The Keret is a collection of observations & musings from an Israeli columnist, which is endearing and amusing. #Seven Husbands is a light read with some heavy moments and a really solid read about an older woman reflecting on her life; the choices & sacrifices she's made.

Reviewsbylola I️ bet we‘ll see a lot of Evelyn today! 7y

#ShadesOfAutumn no leaves turning colors in my neighborhood ~ it's still in the 90's and I live in a desert but my books look pretty! I read the Keret memoir during synagogue (shhh, don't tell) it was quick & poignant as he laments over everyday moments big & small. This was a gift from @carrceli from #summersanta ❣️

mjdowens I am jealous. Our Rabbi had eyes in the back of his head. He always seemed to be able to zero in on that one person not paying attention😂😂 7y
Cinfhen Ha!! @mjdowens believe it or not our synagogue is without a Rabbi... his contract was not renewed and the members can not agree on a new Rabbi #politics 😁😬😂 7y

This is not a traditional memoir, but more a series of short - sometimes funny, sometimes sad - vignettes from Keret's life. I liked the short stories I've read by him, but I wasn't sure how this would be. I loved it and would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested. #LitsyAtoZ @BookishMarginalia

Funny, poignant memoir. I've visited Tel Aviv, so this brought back memories of what we saw. Some topics in the memoir include Angry Birds the game and a game of Pastrami Sandwich. I closed the book with a deep sigh wishing for more.

Cinfhen Really MUST read this one, I've only heard good things😎 8y

Etgar Keret writes super-short short stories exposing the absurdity in the ordinary. In this short memoir he turns that lens on his own life, honing in on the seven years between the birth of his son and the death of his father.

Written in the form of short essays, these glimpses into Keret's family life in Tel Aviv also give a sense of how people carry on when violence could intrude at any moment.

I recommend this memoir to anyone who will listen! It takes place in the "seven good years" between the birth of the author's son during a terrorist attack and the death of his father from cancer. A lyrical book that has hints of the movie, "Life is Beautiful". He finds the humor and profundity in everyday life.

Keret is capable of magic, able to effortlessly bring the reader into a world where humor & melancholy quietly coexist. Here he paints a bittersweet portrait of father-son relationships. It manages to hold onto humor despite war & loss being a constant background in the lives of 3 generations.-Megan

MisterWhitaker Is this a novel? I've seen a lot of his short stories, and I'd love to see what he can do with the long form. 8y
Robothugs Also interested to know if it is a novel. 8y
bookshopsc This is actually his memoir - so far, his first nonfiction printed in English. Sorry for any confusion! - Jocelyn 8y
