Space Between Worlds
Space Between Worlds | Micaiah Johnson

An outsider who can travel between worlds discovers a secret that threatens the very fabric of the multiverse in this stunning debut, a powerful examination of identity, privilege, and belonging. "Gorgeous writing, mind-bending world-building, razor-sharp social commentary, and a main character who demands your attention--and your allegiance."--Rob Hart, author of The Warehouse Multiverse travel is finally possible, but there's just one catch: No one can visit a world where their counterpart is still alive. Enter Cara, whose parallel selves happen to be exceptionally good at dying--from disease, turf wars, or vendettas they couldn't outrun. Cara's life has been cut short on 372 worlds in total. On this dystopian Earth, however, Cara has survived. Identified as an outlier and therefore a perfect candidate for multiverse travel, Cara is plucked from the dirt of the wastelands. Now what once made her marginalized has finally become an unexpected source of power. She has a nice apartment on the lower levels of the wealthy and walled-off Wiley City. She works--and shamelessly flirts--with her enticing yet aloof handler, Dell, as the two women collect off-world data for the Eldridge Institute. She even occasionally leaves the city to visit her family in the wastes, though she struggles to feel at home in either place. So long as she can keep her head down and avoid trouble, Cara is on a sure path to citizenship and security. But trouble finds Cara when one of her eight remaining doppelgngers dies under mysterious circumstances, plunging her into a new world with an old secret. What she discovers will connect her past and her future in ways she could have never imagined--and reveal her own role in a plot that endangers not just her world, but the entire multiverse. "Clever characters, surprise twists, plenty of action, and a plot that highlights social and racial inequities in astute prose."--Library Journal (starred review)

Here are my choices. 2 horror, a sci-fi, and "A vibrant tribute to the stars of a cult queer documentary about New York‘s ball scene in the 80s" Happy picking!

Reggie I‘ve read the bottom two, but I would read them again in a heartbeat. I‘m good with any of them. 1y

Multiverse travel is possible BUT only if your counterpart in the other world is dead. Cara, born in the wasteland, is perfect for traversing bc so many of her otherselves are dead.

Cool premise, but there is SO MUCH going on in this book I dunno how to rate it...it felt like a trilogy stuffed into one book.

Just finished for the #screamathon WoC challenge! Have I somehow missed the signup sheet for this week? 🤔

2021 Reads continued....

Struggled...the writing style, the first person narrative. I liked the story and the Earths just not the execution of it. TBH I found it all rather dull. The cover didn't live up to the hype. It could have been so much more exciting. One for the charity pile.

I was so looking forward to this one, but it was sadly underwhelming in almost every way. Weak world building, flat characters, and a wishy washy, confusing plot. All of this was made more frustrating by the fact that Johnson wrote some really lovely moments. It just didn‘t come together as a whole for me.

This is one of those reads that has you thinking you know what sort of ride you're in for and by the third chapter you realize that you've severely miscalculated. This was twisty & turny & unique & hard-hitting. It had a nicely teased out character reveal. The writing was solid, the world(s) development was extraordinary. It's a great example of how unencumbered Scifi can be and ohh what a satisfying ending can look like. Loads of TWs like murder

Yaaassss! This was so much fun. Definitely has the Dark Matter (Blake Crouch) vibe as promised. The plot was almost fantasy-like (empire and caste systems, etc). Could. Not. Put. It. Down. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Just got my first #BookSpinBingo with the tagged. This grim yet hopeful tale delivers a version of alternate realities unlike any other I‘ve read. The character development crossing worlds fascinates, while the plot takes love, danger, and revenge in new directions. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

These are my plans/hopes for this weekend's #20in4 readathon. I also hope to finish Left-handed Booksellers, which I'm reading on my kindle and Legendborn, which I'm listening to on audio. I know I won't finish everything, but if I can make a dent, I'll be satisfied. What reading plans do you all have for the weekend?

@Andrew65

Andrew65 Good luck 😊👍 3y

I am really sorry if delays are still ongoing. I was told that the packages I sent would be in last Thursday and then I promptly lost the tracking numbers. Basically, I have created the perfect storm of failure. If either of you guys can let me know if I need to do some detective work or replace the book please let me know. #LMPBC #groupp #groupv

PandaPanda I‘ve been meaning to check in because I haven‘t gotten ours yet. I‘ll let you know as soon as I do though! My experience has been this year that stuff is late but it gets there! 3y
wisherwishinguponastar I‘m stilling waiting on one of mine, too. I thought I would ask before I bother a USPS worker. They have a lot on their hands right now. Thanks for your patience, @PandaPanda ! 3y
PandaPanda Hey @booksellerofyourdiscontent still no sign of it wanted to give you the heads up! Did you find the tracking? Hopefully they didn‘t lost it. 3y

wisherwishinguponastar @PandaPanda I didn‘t not find the tracking. I was told if I lost it then it was gone. I can send you a new copy to read and hopefully the other one shows up. I am still waiting on Rosemary and Rue to get to me. @Littlewolf1 have you had any news on that? 3y
wisherwishinguponastar @PandaPanda in a fit of anxiety I just sent you a new copy. It should arrive Friday.🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞 Feel free to keep it or to donate it or whatever if you don‘t end up needing it. My other package I sent the same day as yours arrived yesterday, but I am a glass half empty kinda person. 3y
PandaPanda @booksellerofyourdiscontent oh no! We totally could have waited a couple more days! 3y
wisherwishinguponastar @PandaPanda I really hope it gets to you. There are some fun surprises in the original package. I am just sorry that you haven‘t had the time to enjoy the book. That is my bad. 3y
Littlewolf1 @booksellerofyourdiscontent it should have been there already, let me check with USPS 3y
wisherwishinguponastar @PandaPanda did either of those copies of the Magicians get to you? 3y
PandaPanda @booksellerofyourdiscontent I literally just got the correct copy! As well as the Amazon one. Let me know if there‘s a way to return that and I can package it up and drop it in a ups box if you want to send me the label. 3y

This one didn‘t live up to the hype for me. Loved the “Dark Matter” type setting but all of the different characters left me feeling confused most of the time. Just couldn‘t get into it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Full review on Goodreads

Reviewsbylola The setting was so well crafted initially, but the book quickly lost steam for me and I bailed. 3y
EKonrad @Reviewsbylola Completely agree! The setting was great but there were so many slow parts. 😩 3y

I was supposed to have jury duty this morning, but I was dismissed, so I get to start #FBCReadathon earlier than planned by finishing this #BookOfTheMonth selection that's part Elysium, part Mad Max: Fury Road, plus multiverse travel.

nukie19 That was a pretty fun one! 4y

I loved the writing style and the characters, however it was a little too post-apocalyptic for my taste. I felt so much time was spent on developing that post apocalyptic world that the novel didn‘t delve as much into the multiverse concept that drew me to it in the first place. While Space Between Worlds may not have been my cup of tea exactly, I do intend to read whatever Johnson writes next. #BOTM

Excellently paced plot twists and good characters but it oddly dragged for me. Felt more dystopian than sci-fi.

I felt like this book was a slow read. Once I was able to get past the first few pages, the story really started moving. The plot is basically about a young girl who is able to be transported to different versions of Earth to download|upload data about what‘s happening on that version of Earth (ie, population, etc). Interesting read.

I know which cover I prefer. It kinda irks me when UK & US covers are so different. Just give us the same one!

rwmg Even worse when the title is different, especially when it is so different you don't realise they are the same book 4y

Went a little overboard on packing up my #BOTM box.
Because I didn‘t just buy 12 books from Barnes and Noble 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

All of these sound really good and I‘ll count down until I get my box even though I probably won‘t have time to read any of them until September!
