The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards
The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards: A Novel | Kristopher Jansma
"F. Scott Fitzgerald meets Wes Anderson" (The Village Voice) in this inventive and witty debut about a young mans quest to become a writer and the misadventures in life and love that take him around the globefrom the author of Why We Came to the City As early as he can remember, the narrator of this remarkable novel has wanted to become a writer. From the jazz clubs of Manhattan to the villages of Sri Lanka, Kristopher Jansmas hopelessly unreliableyet hopelessly earnestnarrator will be haunted by the success of his greatest friend and literary rival, the brilliant Julian McGann, and endlessly enamored with Evelyn, the green-eyed girl who got away. A profound exploration of the nature of truth and storytelling, this delightful picaresque tale heralds Jansma as a bold, new American voice. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Bailedbailed

The characters were pretty insufferable and pretentious, but I had to bail when I got to the story within the story within the story. Massive EYEROLL. I don‘t have patience for this kind of thing.

Bailedbailed

Within the first 50 pages, this was starting to remind me too much of a book I hated and bailed on, Wonder Boys by Michael Chabon. I am deeply, deeply allergic to modern satirical novels. I'm done.

shawnmooney @rachelm Yeah...no...you couldn't pay me to even try it 7y

This is the only book I can think of that I've read with an #unreliablenarrator. I didn't like it very much - probably because of the unreliable narrator... #maybookflowers

#day3 #maybookflowers I just LOVE an #unreliablenarrator and this book blurbed as "a matryoshka doll of a story" is a wonderful example.... With themes of truth, lies and storytelling, the narrator is unreliable and charming all at once. "F Scott Fitzgerald meets Wes Anderson"... ?. Recommended to me by my lovely friend @Tex

I honestly couldn't think of anything for "bad cover good book" I don't know yet If this is a good book, and I just think the cover is weird, not so much bad, but it's the best I could come up with. #AprilBookShowers #BadCoverGoodBook @RealLifeReading

JazzFeathers That's really such a weird cover... but l kind of like it :) 7y
Donna_sBookMinute I actually like this cover. 7y

Reading this book felt like being in a sort of literary maze. I'm still not quite sure I fully understand all the narrator was up to. Thanks for the recommendation @Liberty and thanks for getting it for me @BooksForEmpathy 🙌🏻🙌🏻 See below for more spoiler-ish thoughts 👇🏻

Bookworm83 I wasn't initially sure if I was going to give this a pick or a so-so rating. Then, in the middle of reading, I realized I had no clue whether what I was reading was the truth or one of the narrator's stories. I still don't know what, if anything, was "truth" in this book. Any book that plays those type of mind games deserves a ?? 7y
GypsyKat I recently picked this up, so now it's waiting on my TBR shelf. 👍🏼 7y

The Litsy book exchange that keeps on giving! @sisilia already had The Nakano Thrift Shop by the time my parcel arrived, so we agreed to exchange because I want to read it. I've sent her Inoue's The Hunting Gun and some other books, and last night this lovely package arrived! I've wanted to read the Jansma novel for a long time. And just look at the lovely Singaporean batik bookmark! Thank you Sisilia!

sisilia Wow that's fast! Enjoy the books @shawnmooney 😊 Jansma is an excellent writer 7y

erzascarletbookgasm That's cool! I want to read The Nakano Thrift Shop too. Can we do a book exchange? 😊 7y
shawnmooney @erzascarletbookgasm I'll probably want to keep this one, because it's about a neighborhood where I work and that I live close to. But it's also gotten very mixed reviews, so if I don't end up liking it as much as I do the cover and the title, sure! :-) 7y

I loved this book! It's the story of a guy through his own writing, details change but emotions don't. Once, it's a story within a story, within a story. Often experimental, this book shows the creativity writers can have "telling the truth" but giving it slanted. A great fictional writer's guide!

Does it sting like this because I've been robbed or because it was never mine to steal? ... Maybe an idea, like love, cannot ever be stolen away, just as it cannot ever have belonged to me and only me.

MrBook Nice thought! Great pic! 8y
