When Althea Leary abandons her nine-year-old son, Jasper, he s left on his uncle s farm with nothing but a change of clothes and a Bible. It s 1952, and Jasper isn t allowed to ask questions or make a fuss. He s lucky to even have a home and must keep his mouth shut and his ears open to stay in his uncle s good graces. No one knows where his mother went or whether she s coming back. Desperate to see her again, he must take matters into his own hands. From the farm, he embarks on a treacherous search that will take him to the squalid hideaways of Detroit and back again, through tawdry taverns, peep shows, and gambling houses. As he s drawn deeper into an adult world of corruption, scandal, and murder, Jasper uncovers the shocking past still chasing his mother and now it s chasing him too."

Jasper, a 9-year-old, is abandoned by his mom on his uncle‘s farm. He works hard to learn the farm life (he‘s from Detroit) and find his mom. The story is full of suspense and illustrates the strength of family bonds. Jasper is such a great character; determined and tough. 4 1/2 🌟

Another one of those rather pointless books I won't remember having read in a week and that could perhaps have been an OK movie for television. Not worth spending time on.

JoeStalksBeck I listened to this one. Started out interesting but I gradually lost interest 7y

I'm guilty, on long road trips or during particularly busy periods of my life, of assuaging my insatiable need to read with Kindle books that are popular but outside my usual choice- this way I'm not drawn so deeply into a book that I neglect my adult duties. This was one of those books. The plot seemed unnecessarily vague and meandering, a bit redundant and sometimes reaching; the ending felt haphazard, as if rushed to tidy up and close out. 😩

Nine year old Jasper's mom, Althea, leaves him at his uncle's farm and then she disappears. It is 1953 and life on the farm is hard. Jasper tries to solve the mystery of his missing mom by reading the buried book, which is her journal from when she was a girl. Some awful things happen to Jasper along the way, which make it tough to read in places. The story and characters will stay with you long after you are finished reading.Spoilers in comments

melbeautyandbooks His mom's assault as a girl, and the other girls also assaulted by the same man was awful. The attitude of the men, that not doing anything about it was to protect the girls, makes me sick. I would like to think that attitude is much different in 2016, although I am not 100% certain that it is. 8y
melbeautyandbooks Oops 🙊 It should say 1952, not 1953. Wish there was an edit feature. 8y
DebinHawaii I really liked this one but it was dark and hard to read at times for sure. I loved Jasper. ❤️📚 8y

I had to put this one down several times because some of what nine-year-old Jasper went through to find out what happened to his mother was dark & very hard to read. But, that being said, this is a strong historical mystery set in 1952 Michigan, told mostly from the POV of a wonderful, smart & stubborn boy who won't stop until he learns the truth. Paired on my blog review with (vegan) chocolate ice cream. Link to review/recipe in comments. 📚🍴

melbeautyandbooks Looking forward to reading this. I liked her last book a lot. Glad to hear you gave it a good review. 8y

DebinHawaii @melmelbeauty I didn't read her last one but I put in on my list after reading this one. This one is definitely dark & I had to stop & read from happier books several times but it was really good. 👍🏻 8y
DebinHawaii @BethFishReads Thanks! It turned out super creamy and good. 😀 8y
melbeautyandbooks @DebinHawaii- I have read some other books like that. They are really good, but you need a break to get your head out of that darkness. Her other book is not that dark. I think you will like it. That ice cream looks yummy! 8y
DebinHawaii @Zelma This is the post with the chocolate ice cream. 😀 8y
Zelma 👍 I am trying to hold off on the ice cream in my freezer but your post may make me lose my resolve! 8y
DebinHawaii @melmelbeauty Yes, I looked to see if the first book was as dark & it didn't sound like it. 👍 This one wasn't all dark but I fell so hard for Jasper and wanted bad stuff to stop happening! And, yes--the ice cream was really good! 😀 8y
Lizpixie Ice cream is life! 8y
melbeautyandbooks @DebinHawaii- I love when a book makes you feel for the character as if he/she is a real person. You don't want bad things to happen to them. It is amazing how reading (or listening) to these words make you feel sad or happy for these people that don't exist. 8y

So happy to have found this gem on Netgalley! This book has a lot to offer - bootlegging, murder, drug smuggling, fugitives - set against the background of 1950s farm life. It was exciting. I tore through it!

OSChamberlain Awesome!! I'm not much for ebooks but I just started using Net Galley this morning and I'm gonna give it a shot. Just downloaded this one 😁 8y

#Day27 #AugustPhotoChallenge #currentlyreading I usually have at least 4-5 books going at once-paper, e-book, cookbook, etc. but I'm feeling 'book moody' & have these 7 started right now + Jane Steele in audio. Gaiman is ongoing (an essay or so a night), two for book tours, one from a blogger for review, Soup Swap for a blogging event. I keep falling asleep w/ The Girls (need to read it in more awake times) so started Ellison last night. #bookadhd

Hugoreads I like that....book moody! 8y
Zelma I've been reading the Gaiman for months. It is slow going but works for me. I don't want to speed through essays and speeches. 8y
DebinHawaii @Hugoreads Sometimes I am just plain moody too! 😉👍 8y

DebinHawaii @Zelma Exactly! I like to savor his writing. 👍😀 8y
Karkar Book moody. Perfect way to describe my mood now too! 📚📚📚📚😖 8y
frankincense_and_sensibility How's the Jane Steele audio? I loved the print edition but a good narration would add even more to it. 8y
DebinHawaii @Karkar Yes! Litsy friends just get it! 👍📚😀 8y
DebinHawaii @frankincense_and_sensibility I am really liking the narrator--her accent and voice are great. I was going to read it but the holds for the print & e-book versions at my library were much longer than the audio. With the accent & writing style I find the audio is best for walking or really mindless tasks so my focus can be on the story. 👍🏻 8y

1952: 9 year old Jasper gets dropped of by is mum at his uncles and aunts in rural Michigan with the words: I‘ll be back soon. Jasper starts to find clues on his mums disappearance and has to face a lot of situations to find the truth. This is a great read. The story itself got me hooked and I read the book in 3 sittings. a book to my liking!
I received a free copy of this book from #NetGalley for review consideration.

BookishMarginalia Sounds great! Thanks! 8y
