My daughter and I finished this beautiful book tonight. Kate DiCamillo never disappoints me. ❤️

Kate DiCamillo is the best. This middle grade medieval tale has some fantastical twists, but is so affirming of the strength that lies within all of us. And of love. And, hilariously, the unexpected power of goats. Great for shy, reticent kids and for world-weary adults.

Heartwarming middle grade novel about the power of love and stories. Gorgeous illustrations. Would make a great read-aloud.

I am a big DiCamillo fan, so I couldn‘t pass this up. A different style of writing, but it suits the story. Answelica the goat is a treasure! The ending was not quite up to par, but it could just be me. Not as good as my favorite (“The Tiger Rising”), but a good tale.

Bravery, loyalty, and belief in oneself; the wonder of being known and loved by others for who you truly are. Two courageous children and a ferocious goat learn that there‘s no limit to what the heart can hold in this reassuring fable. Age 8-up

I like stories with strong female leads. I like medieval (or, in this case, pseudo-medieval) settings. Beatrice is an important name in our family. Several friends read this story before me and loved it. For all those reasons I wanted to read this book and expected to enjoy it but it was just middling for me. Blackall's illustrations were good. ⬇️

This was a really cute book! DiCamillo is usually hit or miss for me but this was a hit.

The first chapters utterly charmed me with the style of writing and the world Kate created. The illustrations and the construction of the book are also charming. There is a lot of darkness in the book which the characters must deal with, and this affected me. It was a bit heavy for me in that regard—the sadness in the world. The themes of love, friendship, self-knowledge, courage, and the power of story are beautifully rendered.

More books than last month but I didn‘t get to as many spooky ones as I planned. Read my #DoubleSpin but not my #BookSpin. And no bingos.

This was the first book I‘ve read by middle grade lit icon Kate DiCamillo! Set in a medieval time and place, this warmly-narrated audiobook is full of huggable characters and the power of love and story to conquer injustice and greed. Answelica the hard-headed goat by far steals the show, however!

Kate DiCamillo just keeps writing perfect books. This one reads like a gentle folktale featuring a trio of endearing characters (actually it‘s more of a foursome if you count the goat!) embroiled in intrigue and deception in a kingdom, far, far away. This would make a lovely classroom read-aloud and could spark some discussion about equity in education. Highly recommended.

I am crying over how perfect this book is. It hooked me with the hilariously terrifying goat (“Answelica was a goat with teeth that were the mirror of her soul — large, sharp, and uncompromising”) and tricked me into big feelings.
Pretend you‘re getting it for your child, niece, nephew if you feel too old for a kids‘ book, but read it before you pass it to someone the ‘right‘ age - you won‘t regret it. #ARC
