Agatha of Little Neon
Agatha of Little Neon: A Novel | Claire Luchette
27 posts | 18 read | 28 to read
"Blazingly original, wry, and perfectly attuned to the oddnessand the profundityof life (Cristina Henrquez), Claire Luchette's debut, Agatha of Little Neon, is a novel about yearning and sisterhood, figuring out how you fit in (or dont), and the unexpected friends who help you find your truest self Agatha has lived every day of the last seven years with her sisters: they work together, laugh together, pray together. Their world is contained within the little house they share. The four of them are devoted to Mother Roberta and to their quiet, purposeful life. But when the parish goes broke, the sisters are forced to move. They land in Woonsocket, a former mill town now dotted with wind turbines. They head up a halfway house, where they live alongside castoffs like the jawless Tim Gary and the headstrong Lawnmower Jill. Agatha is forced to venture out into the world alone, to teach math at a local all-girls high school, where for the first time in years she will have to reckon with what she sees and feels all on her own. Who will she be if she isn't with her sisters? These women, the church, have been her homeor has she just been hiding? Disarming, delightfully deadpan, and full of searching, Claire Luchettes Agatha of Little Neon offers a view into the lives of women and the choices they make. It is a novel about female friendship and devotion, the roles made available to us, and how we become ourselves.

A quiet and gentle story that asks a lot of big questions. Agatha is a sister in a holy order who starts to question her future. It looks at faith and meaning, what is sisterhood and what is loneliness. How do we help other people and what that looks like from a religious order. It also touches on the issues of faith when the men in your church have done such wrong, and the continued suppression of women. Highly recommended!

I enjoyed this, but not quite as much as expected. Maybe it was just my mood because there is a lot to like. Sister Agatha reflects back on her growing disillusionment with the Catholic Church and comes to question her place within it. Don‘t let the loud cover fool you, this is a quiet story simply told.

Tamra I tried this on audio and it wasn‘t sticking. I thought I might try print. 1y

📖 10-5-22 || Loved this #NunLit book! The story is character-focused on a young sister who falls out of love with the church. The writing is excellent and evocative. There‘s also some humor mixed in.

jlhammar Yay! I look forward to reading this in August. 2y

A quiet novel full of compassion (for others, but also finding it for yourself) and a healthy dose of wit. I loved the Neons, the nuns, and especially Agatha. How she slowly grew her confidence; and her journey through questioning her convictions while never judging those around her for theirs.

Thank you for the recommendation @monalyisha 🎉 I don't think I'd have even heard of this one if it wasn't on your list last year!

JamieArc I want to stack this one whenever I see posts about it! 2y
Kristin_Reads Ha! I hadn‘t seen your post yet when I just posted mine about this book. Loved it 😊 2y

TheKidUpstairs @JamieArc do it! I'm so glad I finally picked it up. It was on @monalyisha 's #NewYearWhoDis last from last year, but I didn't get to it in January. I was getting so excited about #AuldLangSpine so I decided to finally pick it up and it was totally worth it. 2y
TheKidUpstairs @Kristin_Reads I always say great minds read alike! 2y
TheKidUpstairs @Chelsea.Poole woo hoo! 2y
JamieArc Of course it was on @monalyisha ‘s #NYWD list! She‘s my #AuldLangSpine match this year and I love all of her picks. 2y
monalyisha @JamieArc I almost want to bend the rules AGAIN and say you can count this one for #AuldLangSpine since I‘m your partner and it *was* on my list…at one time. 😅 2y
monalyisha @TheKidUpstairs I‘m so glad you enjoyed it! I really loved it. Whenever I came across someone putting it down, I could feel myself getting defensive. 😅 It got so little attention, I felt like it deserved for all of the attention it *did* get to be *good* attention. I honestly love a book with not much plot to speak of. 🤷‍♀️ What can I say? 2y

Choosing my next two reads in honour of the upcoming #AuldLangSpine reading event 😁 Agatha of Little Neon is one from @monalyisha 's list last year which I never got around to, and Jane Austen Society is off of @sprainedbrain 's list the year before.

Fittingly, this one is a pick for me. Annie Jones rarely steers us wrong, amirite?!

JamieArc @jlhammar This might be a good companion read for #nunlit 2y
jlhammar @JamieArc Yes, I'll be reading this one in August per my 2023 monthly #NunLit plans. Can't wait! I didn't pick it for the #NunLitQuarterly group reads because I knew some had already read it. I tried to go with titles most or all in the group hadn't read yet. It would be fun to have you read along for this one (and/or any of the others in my #NunLit extra credit post) on the off-months if you're interested and it works in your reading schedule. 2y
jlhammar @Erinreadsthebooks Sounds wonderful. Looking forward to this one! If you are interested in more nuns in your 2023 reading, you are more than welcome to join us for #NunLitQuarterly. Check out my previous #NunLit posts for details. 2y

A quiet, character-based novel about a group of four nuns who run a halfway house, as seen through the eyes of one of them, who happens to be a lesbian. Agatha loves their close companionship, yet chafes when the others refuse to question the misogynistic attitudes & criminal behaviours of the men of the church. I really enjoyed the audiobook read by Hillary Huber & cheered Agatha on as she started thinking & acting more independently. #LGBTQ

What‘s it like to live a sister/nun‘s life in the modern world? This was an interesting look from behind the habit. Melancholy but filled with sweet, multilayered characters. It was hard to leave Agatha at the end. I‘ll be wondering how she is doing for awhile (even while realizing she‘s fictional 😅).

Another book that I would never have even heard of without #NewYearWhoDis! Thanks again, @monalyisha and @erinreads 😊

monalyisha I so loved this one, too! That roller skating scene really did me in. 💓 3y
AmyG I love reading about nuns. 3y
Karisa @monalyisha Oh! The Gary Tim and Agatha scenes were so good! 😢 @AmyG I haven‘t read many books with nuns before as the main character especially. I could never make that kind of commitment to religion so I think I couldn‘t see the real person inside the habit as Agatha put it. It was fascinating to see it through Agatha‘s eyes and empathize with her. 3y
AmyG I am fascinated by someone who chooses that life. Ha, I‘m Jewish. 3y

This was a deep cut from my audible recs, and I loved it!

Agatha and her four nun sisters do everything together, but due to budget cuts, they‘re sent to a small parrish in Rhode Island where they run a halfway house. When Agatha alone is asked to teach at a local school, she begins to think independently and question long held beliefs and what brought her to the sisterhood.

A thoughtful character study of a woman in flux.

Cinfhen Sounds like fun 🤩 is it a #BorrowOrBuy?? 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I bought it, and I‘m glad I did because my libraries didn‘t have it. It‘s a good one to consider for sure! 3y

A weird little read about four nuns who are relocated from upstate NY to Woonsocket RI.. I‘d say if you‘re going to read one nun-related novel this year, make it The Matrix by Lauren Groff..

A coming of age story. Full of wonder, loneliness, & rage. Told quietly, in small moments & with sideways humor.

Readers have criticized Luchette‘s novel, claiming that “nothing happens.” But…a woman grows into herself. She upends her entire life. She finds the courage to upend others. I‘ve never understood that criticism. Internal sea-change is SOMETHING!

Agatha counsels her students, “Cultivate your ability to forget about the point.” Do that.

erinreads Absolutely loved this one. 💕 3y
monalyisha @erinreads Me too! I mean, I was definitely predisposed to. I double-majored in English & Religious Studies & I live in Rhode Island. 👯‍♀️ BUT STILL. When Tim Gary teaches her to skate? Or how about her observation that “when it comes to purpose or meaning or reasons to live, all we can hope for is something akin to that “Oh, oh!”? And that open ending and all of its silent, conflicting emotions?! I thought it was great. 3y

From reading the tagged, to converting our (vaguely Day of the Dead-inspired) memorial altar into a wintry scene, it‘s been a nun-filled day today.

I bought a little, vintage stained glass church & it came with some religious figurines. This particular nun SLAYS me! I don‘t know what she‘s actually meant to be doing…but sister‘s got MOVES! 💃

This book has a *terrible* Litsy rating…but it‘s set in Rhode Island (where I live) & DIG THIS blurb (!):

“Luchette is…a master at balancing a sneaky deadpan wit with deep and genuine pathos…[She] brilliantly mixes the sacred and the transgressive, the solemn and the absurd, and the profound, contradictory longings for belonging and independence…A moving meditation on how to be a woman in the world — and how to be a human.”

💚🙏🏻💖

Laughterhp I have a love hate relationship with reading books set in RI! I read a book set on Block Island once and it drove me nuts! I kept saying that‘s not really there!! 3y
Kristin_Reads I‘ve been wanting to read this one! 3y

Why is it so common in literary fiction nowadays to not actually have a POINT to a story anymore? I realize life doesn't always provide meaning for everything, either, but it feels like such a waste of paper when you write it down. #literaryfiction #thisiswhyiwasaterribleenglishmajor
