Bestselling novelist Garth Nix returns to the Old Kingdom for the never-before-told love story of Sabriels parents, Terciel and Elinor, and the charter magic that brought them togetherand threatened to tear them apart. A long-awaited prequel to a classic fantasy series. In the Old Kingdom, a land of ancient and often terrible magics, eighteen year-old orphan Terciel learns the art of necromancy from his great-aunt Tizanael. But not to raise the Dead, rather to lay them to rest. He is the Abhorsen-in-Waiting, and Tizanael is the Abhorsen, the latest in a long line of people whose task it is to make sure the Dead do not return to Life. Across the Wall in Ancelstierre, a steam-age country where magic usually does not work, nineteen year-old Elinor lives a secluded life. Her only friends an old governess and an even older groom who was once a famous circus performer. Her mother is a tyrant, who is feared by all despite her sickness and impending death . . . but perhaps there is even more to fear from that. Elinor does not know she is deeply connected to the Old Kingdom, nor that magic can sometimes come across the Wall, until a plot by an ancient enemy of the Abhorsens brings Terciel and Tizanael to Ancelstierre. In a single day of fire and death and loss, Elinor finds herself set on a path which will take her into the Old Kingdom, into Terciels life, and will embroil her in the struggle of the Abhorsens against the Dead who will not stay dead. One of the greatest living fantasy writers. I will never get enough of the Old Kingdom. Sarah J. Maas, #1 New York Times bestselling author

I love that Nix‘s Old Kingdom series isn‘t a chronological series but allows him the freedom to bounce around in time. Book 6: Terciel & Elinor jumps some 30 years prior to the birth of Sabriel, the main character of the first book in the series. He also has managed to produce six books in the series that can be read independently of the series and in any order. The creative freedom absolutely shows in each book, a tremendous gift for the reader.

I started this series last December. Might as well finish it this December.

Before Sabriel, Elinor was living with a domineering mother, an overly cautious housekeeper, and a juggling stable master. Terciel was the Abhorsen in waiting, terrified to take over the mantle of Abhorsen. And Kerrigor was on the rise.

A fantastic return to the Old Kingdom! A fun character exploration of Sabriel‘s parents. More insight into Ancelstierre politics. More Clayr! More knowledge of charter magic! Not nearly enough Mogget. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

BookmarkTavern I feel a little weird about the fact that Terciel is, quite explicitly, a character with brown skin in the beginning, who eventually is bleached to have white skin after traveling in death. 2y
Clare-Dragonfly Definitely not enough Mogget! 😁 2y

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! 2y
JudeCC Should we read this one first? Or do we can read the whole series and then this one? 😃 2y
BookmarkTavern @WJCintron Huh. What a great question! I personally enjoyed reading this after getting to know Sabriel of the original trilogy. This tells the story of her parents. I think enough information is given you could read this first if you wanted! 2y
JudeCC @ozma.of.oz Awesome! Thanks! 😃🙌 2y

This wasn‘t my favorite of the series, but I enjoyed returning to the Old Kingdom. Since this is a prequel, I felt it lost a lot of tension, since it was pretty clear to me who would die and who would live. I also felt the romance was a bit too rapid to take seriously. However, I enjoyed the ride.

Started reading this today. I‘m enjoying it (and it‘s going quickly!) but I just realized that if it‘s about Sabriel‘s parents there‘s no way it has a happy ending 😭

Head back to the Old Kingdom to meet Sabriel's parents in this prequel from Garth Nix. I love this series and really enjoyed these characters, but this book mostly adds context about Kerrigor.

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.
Join the fun if you want. This is day 351.

The story of Sabriel‘s parents is filled with danger, adventure, romance &, of course, magic. In other words, it‘s everything you would expect from a fantasy written by Nix. I really enjoyed this prequel to Sabriel & the opportunity to spend more time in the Old Kingdom series. Fans of the series will surely love it. For those just discovering the series, this book stands on its own & is a great introduction. Definitely recommended.

Nutmegnc I just got it and I can‘t wait!! 3y

TracyReadsBooks So fun. A book and signed bookplate might just be worth the price of admission. I really like both of these authors! 3y
