The Dinner Lady Detectives
The Dinner Lady Detectives: A charming British village cosy mystery | Hannah Hendy
8 posts | 8 read
Murder is a dish best served ice cold... Margery and Clementine are enjoying a peaceful middle-age together in the small, idyllic town of Dewstow, and eagerly awaiting retirement from their work on the front line serving meals to the students at Summerview secondary school. Their calm life is shattered when their kitchen manager is found dead in the schools walk-in freezer. The police are adamant that its an open-and-shut case of accidental death. Margery and Clementine are convinced theres something far more nefarious going on, and they take it upon themselves to investigate. As they inch closer to the truth, it becomes clear that someone will stop at nothing to keep the pair quiet. Will the perpetrator get their just-desserts before their time runs out? A delightful, quintessentially British cosy mystery perfect for fans of SJ Bennett and Robert Thorogood.

This was a fun, light read. I love the older, lesbian couple, Clementine and Margery, who are the main characters. My sticking point here was the actual plot. I don‘t buy the denouement; it makes no sense. It‘s been my nighttime book, but I only had 30 minutes left, so I finished it on my #audiowalk and then went back to The Stars My Destination.

The mystery wasn‘t great here, but other parts of the story were just so ridiculous and funny that I will read more in this series.

Just finished this cozy mystery yesterday- Margery and Clementine are in their early sixties working in the kitchen at the local high school . Nothing much has happened in the last twenty years until their boss ends up dead in suspicious circumstances. And the Di nner Lady Detectives 🕵️‍♂️ have their first case. I really wanted to enjoy this a bit more. It was pretty good but not great. I would read future books in the series 🐉💚

Picked these up for some light reading. A couple of “lunch ladies” who solve the murder of the lunchroom manager. This is an LGBTQ friendly novel. The “detectives” are an elderly couple who‘ve been in a committed relationship for a while. Put it at “so-so” but it‘s a good introduction. 3⭐️

Not the best book I've ever read but it was easy to follow. The characters weren't great but I didn't guess the ending. I wouldn't read the rest of the series.

I love the two main ladies. They have been portrayed as quite old even though age wise they are not so, but I did enjoy them and their cozy life. I like that they are a couple but that it‘s not brought on super strongly.

The plot is humorous and fun even though there‘s a murder to solve and nobody believes it to be a murder. It got better and better the further along it got and I could not for the life of me guess the murderer.

The premise was promising, but I was never able to connect with the characters (I can‘t really enjoy books where one character is meek and allows others to trample over them for very long). And while the mystery was interesting, the pace was too slow for me; no sense of urgency or any reason for me to need to read just one more chapter.
