Pickpick

I drew a random title from the windowsill pile to break up my Lunar Chronicles reading and was quite happy with this month's #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead was picked. This is a childhood favorite that I hadn't read in decades and I was glad to have the nudge to pick it up for a reread!!

Jane actually holds up pretty well over time. This and The Blue Castle are two of my favorite Montgomery's, and they have some similar themes of a dreary home life ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) at the beginning of the book and the eventual escape to a more independent and fulfilling life. Jane gains confidence as she learns to embrace what she loves. She does seem a bit young to do all the things she does, but her sturdy can-do attitude, strong sense of justice, and delightful sense of humor once again won me over. There are so many fun side characters sketched in just a few perfect sentences as well. As an adult, I wish that ⬇ 1d
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) the ending was a little less abrupt, but you can't have everything!

Yay!! I finally finished this #AlmostaChunkster !! I absolutely loved it, so my slow reading speed was definitely not a reflection of my enjoyment! This series is really picking up momentum. Meyer does a fabulous job balancing the different characters and their stories. I am not even sure who I love the most. (Okay, probably Thorne haha) I also think that she captures the themes of each fairy tale so well. Finishing this one wash main goal for ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) #MarvellousMay so everything else this week is just gravy 😂 I am hoping to finish at least two more books, but we will see how the week unwinds!! Next up, a random draw from the windowsill before reading Fairest - even though it was published after the rest of the series, I've seen a lot of recommendations to read it between Cress and Winter to get the full background of Levana, so I'm going for it!

So yes, the windowsill situation is growing dire haha More holds came from the library and I just have not had a lot of reading time!! My #WeeklyForecast goals involve finishing Cress and hopefully the tagged book as well. I'm really enjoying this series but my limited reading time has made it hard to really get into Cress. My project at the orchard is almost done and it's supposed to be rainier this week, so I may be able to squeeze in some ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) extra pages!! Every time I look at the windowsill I get all excited because I literally want to read ALL THESE BOOKS! I guess I just need to hire a full-time landscaper and housekeeper and then I would have the time I need. 😂 @Cinfhen 3d

Gone with the Wind | Margareth Mitchell
post image

#BookReport - The windowsill has remained mostly static this week. I always forget how nice weather cuts into reading time!! I've had so many outside projects underway, but things are starting to come together. I've included a picture of the side garden so you can see where my reading time has really been spent!! I checked off two of my chapter-a-day(ish) reads this week (bottom picture), but only one windowsill book, although I'm almost ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) halfway through Cress. Gone With the Wind continues to ruin my life with its absurdly long chapters, obnoxious Scarlet, and overall completely depressing story. But Scarlet isn't the only one who can grit her teeth and be stubborn, and I'm determined to finish this one, even if I hate it all the way! In contrast, I'm thoroughly enjoying the Jane Austen book, Treasure Island, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (surprisingly!), and #DraculaDaily.⬇ 4d
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) The Ottomans is a bit of a struggle but it is quite interesting even if it is a bit dense. I've been reading it at breakfast, though, so maybe that's the problem! 😂

Only one week until vacation - gotta decide which of these books are coming with me when we head north!!

marleed Your garden is gorgeous! 4d
Ruthiella Your side garden is lovely! 😍 It‘s been a couple of decades since I read GwtW but I do remember being mostly exasperated by Scarlet, but then every so often she‘d redeem herself with her grit and gumption. 4d

Cinfhen I LOVE your side garden 🤩🤩🤩I‘d love to see more garden shots 🥰maybe it‘s time you remove Scarlett from the window 😂vacation time- yay!!!! Enjoy 4d
TheAromaofBooks @MoonWitch94 - We are off to Michigan's Upper Peninsula!! Neither of us has been there before and I'm excited about seeing Lake Superior. Anticipating chilly/possibly damp weather, but that just means more reading time 😂 I have definitely been known to load up a milk crate of books to take on vacation before. The paranoia of running out of reading material is REAL!! 4d
TheAromaofBooks @marleed @JackOBotts @Suet624 - Thank you!!! It's a lot of work but so lovely to enjoy. The tall shrubs are hibiscus with double blossoms and look absolutely GORGEOUS when they are in bloom!! 4d
TheAromaofBooks @Ruthiella - I do have a reluctant admiration for Scarlet who really does get stuff done no matter what it takes. But since she is literally the most selfish person I've ever read as MC, it makes it difficult to like her - literally everything she does is to protect herself, even caring for other people traces back to what they give her. She's ruthlessly practical and does literally whatever it takes to keep things going, but... not very likable😂 4d
TheAromaofBooks @wordslinger42 - So many people love this one, but I've found it rather depressing (considering the background), not even remotely romantic, & Scarlet, while full of grit, determination, & bulldogged endurance, is incredibly self-absorbed and not someone I find particularly likable. It's still really interesting from a historical perspective of both the story itself and the time it was written, so it's worthwhile to me... but not one I'll reread😂 4d
TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen - You know I'm usually about bailing on books that aren't working, but I really do want to finish this classic. It's very interesting from a historical perspective, even if Scarlet makes me so mad sometimes!!! The side garden is coming along very happily. We got the ponds cleaned out today so the fish and frogs (we bought the fish & then they multiplied; the frogs brought themselves haha) are pleased. I love watching them swim around!! 4d
TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk - We have had SO MUCH RAIN in April!!! This week was the first time we've had more than two consecutive days without rain in I can't remember how long! Hopefully you can get out in the garden soon. It's been honestly delightful to get my hands in some dirt this week!!! 4d
MoonWitch94 @TheAromaofBooks Have a fantastic trip!!! That sounds lovely. I bring a bag of books with me on every vacation (even if I‘m flying)! It‘s my thing. And then I buy one somewhere along my way, too. #bookwormproblems 3d
TheAromaofBooks @MoonWitch94 - Yes!! I love buying at least one book on every trip. It's so fun to have a “useful“ memento!! 3d
CindyMyLifeIsLit Your side garden is beautiful—what a lovely reading spot! I hope you find some enjoyment in GWtW. It‘s one of my favorites, partly because Scarlett was my first ever unlikeable but interesting protagonist. It looks like Cary Elwes‘s As You Wish is checked off! Did you finish it? How did you like it? We use Princess Bride to teach archetypes and I love telling the kids the “behind-the-scenes” stories! 😁 3d
TheAromaofBooks @CindyMyLifeIsLit - I do have a reluctant admiration for Scarlet, but it doesn't keep me from wanting to shake her half the time 😂 I absolutely loved As You Wish, it was just so warm and friendly. I would have loved more details and more stories, but thoroughly enjoyed what was there - already passed it on to my parents who are also huge fans of the movie!! 3d

I really enjoy Thayne's novels, which walk that line between romance and women's fiction - just enough drama and romance to keep me engaged, but not so much of one or the other to make me roll my eyes haha This story focuses on three women - Rosemary and her adult daughters, Cami and Violet. Violet's twin sister, Lily, has recently died in a tragic accident. At the time of her death, she was working on creating a Glampground on a neighbor's ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (con't) property. Rosemary is determined to make this dream a reality, and the Glampground is now up and running. The problem is that Lily, who wasn't always all about the details, neglected to get the very important signature from the neighbor on an official lease agreement. With the neighbor beginning to show signs of dementia, his son, who has been out of the country, assumes that Lily was taking advantage and is determined to shut the entire ⬇ 1w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) business down. The sisters come together to help their mom, and there really aren't any big surprises along the way. However, I enjoyed the way that there had never been a huge rupture between the women - they had just grown apart after Rosemary divorced her husband & moved several hours away, taking the twins with her and leaving Cami with their dad. This was a gentle story about grief, guilt, and second chances. Nothing groundbreaking ⬇ 1w

I honestly cannot believe I had never read this one before! It was absolutely delightful. I loved the contrast between Lady Susan's “polite“ letters and the ones she send to her best friend. I also was cracking up at the letters her sister-in-law was sending to the SIL's mother, full of polite rage. I definitely wanted more of this story, and it's fun to think of how it may have been fledged out into a full-length novel. Would Lady Susan have ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) remained the main character, or would have position have been taken over by her daughter? Frederica seems more in keeping with other Austen heroines, but we pretty much only hear of her secondhand here. All in all, great fun, and I'm so glad that the #PemberLittens inspired me to read this one!!

TheAromaofBooks @melmes - I totally forgot to reply to this earlier!! I definitely do recommend this but it's just a short story - my copy was only 71 pages long - rather than a polished novel, so some of the characters are a bit underdeveloped and the ending is rather abrupt. I have had this book on my TBR for a while, and my #NewYearWhoDis list from @vonnie862 gave me the nudge I needed to bump it up a priority level. I'm so glad I did because this book was honestly delightful. Elwes is so warm and friendly throughout, with a very upbeat view of the making of The Princess Bride. I loved the additional memories from other members of the cast and crew throughout as well. If you are looking for some "dirt" you'll be ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) disappointed. But if you want some fun little facts and anecdotes, along with reassurance that this cast really was having as much fun as they appeared to be, you should enjoy this one. Mehso-so

The tagged book is listed with a different author so... not sure if they are supposed to be the same. Can there really be two books with this same random title?! 😂

Quite a while back I bought an entire box of Regency romances on ebay for quite cheap, mostly because it included several Georgette Heyer books that I didn't own yet. I've slowly been working my way through the other books, which have been pretty much uniformly terrible LOL ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) This one honestly didn't start too badly. Athena's parents have died recently, so she and her brother, Ares, are off to Greece to scatter the parents' ashes someplace or other that was meaningful to them. They end up hiring this other guy to be their guide as Greece is currently ruled by the Turks/Ottoman Empire and this guy is familiar with the culture and language. Of course there's a disaster and the dude (who Strongly Disapproves of ⬇ 1w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) of Women, Especially Sassy Ones Who Travel) and Athena have to travel together incognito. While completely eye-rolly it honestly wasn't too terrible of a set up for them to be stuck together and to fall in love. But then, in the last 30 pages, the entire book went off the rails. This whole time they weren't even sure if Ares was alive. When they get to Athens, he's there and instead of it being like “Oh wow, this is crazy, we're all ⬇ 1w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) alive and safe, let's catch up on our stories!“ Ares immediately starts accusing the dude of kidnapping Athena yadda yadda. Then Ares proceeds to lie to both of them about the other's indifference to keep them apart... for no reason that made any sense, especially since in the beginning of the book, Ares and Athena are presented as really close, loving siblings. TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Scarlet is SUCH a brat. (Side note: What are the odds of me reading TWO books with MCs named Scarlet in the same week??) Sometimes I read a book and immediately add it to my reread list - this was one that I read back in 2018 and have been meaning to reread ever since. I enjoyed it just as much this time around. It's a story that “should“ annoy me, but I found myself once again completely rooting for this mismatch group of kids. Vic's journey to find some semblance of peace with the death of his father could have been cheesy and eye-rolly, but instead is genuine ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) and thoughtful. Arnold's decision to give Vic a rare physical condition is another aspect that could have come through as gimmicky, but instead is presented so well that it made me want to look up more about it. TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) mom set them on a believable path of reconciliation. An excellent coming-of-age novel that deals with grief so very well, this one is staying on my shelves.

TW: We know there's a murder at some point from the first chapter. While short and not intensely graphic, I did find the actual murder later in the book to be somewhat disturbing. However, it's a very short scene.

Thanks for tagging me in #Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView !!

1. It kind of depends on the vacation, but roughly “a pile“ 😂 I tend to use vacation as a time to reread some old favorites, which I find relaxing.
2. Yes, I mostly read physical books in general, and I honestly love the way books seem to soak up the vibes from vacations. The tagged book has been taken on probably a dozen vacations. But I do take my Kindle for back up!!

TheAromaofBooks Want to play @vonnie862 @nocto @LeticiaToraci @faelinwolf @Bklover ?? And anyone else who would like to join!!! 2w
KristiAhlers I always pack the kindle so I can read what motivates me. And I ALWAYS manage to end up at a bookstore where I ALWAYS walk away with books 🤣 2w
AnneCecilie Someone else who is just like me. I generally associates books with specific vacations 2w
See All 15 Comments
melmes Which kindle do you use? 2w
melmes @AnneCecilie I agree ☝️ 2w
TheSpineView You're welcome! Thanks for playing! 2w
TheAromaofBooks @KristiAhlers - I love visiting bookstores on vacations!!! I'm also a huge fan of antique stores/flea markets - I've found loads of fun older books that way. 2w
TheAromaofBooks @AnneCecilie @melmes - I have a lot of books that are associated with where I read them, and I love that!! 2w
TheAromaofBooks @melmes - I have a 6“ Paperwhite that's several years old now. It's not fancy but it's perfect for as much ereading as I do, which isn't a super lot. 2w
Bklover Thanks for the tag!!! It‘s Wednesday but I‘ll play anyway!! 2w
LeticiaToraci I usually take four physical books and my e-reader too. 2w
melmes @TheAromaofBooks sounds nice! I was eventually thinking on getting a kindle. Although, I‘m not completely sure about it 2w
TheAromaofBooks @melmes - I really like the Paperwhite. It has a different type of screen from a normal smart phone/tablet so it doesn't glare. My eyes get really fatigued if I read a lot on my phone, but I don't get that from the Paperwhite. It's great for times when I don't know how long I'm going to be gone/how much reading I will do - for a while I was spending a lot of time at doctor appointments with a family member, and the Kindle was great for days ⬇ 2w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) when I wasn't sure how long I was going to be sitting in a waiting room!! I still prefer to read physical books, but the Kindle has found its place in my world because it is lightweight, convenient, and can hold so many books at once. But I do find it difficult to organize books on my Kindle, and I'm someone who likes to own physical copies of things, so I don't ever see it becoming my number one reading method. 2w
Karons1 @TheAromaofBooks I also prefer physical books 📚 and never read so much on my kindle they sit on it unread for years and Iv forgotten what i have ! But it is ideal for holidays it‘s the only time I tend to take it . Wev just had a short 6day break in the sun and I took 4 paperbacks of which I read 3 and read 2 on my kindle 😆 2w

Bingo Love | Tee Franklin

Here's the #BookSpinBingo card! First, I put our official numbers (5 & 20) back in the mix. Then I drew them all out & wrote them down as I went, meaning the official numbers are just mixed into the card with the rest! As you can see, 21-25 are both labeled with their numbers & also as free spaces, so you can use them to match however you wrote your list. To score a bingo, just read books (in any order) that are in any row or column!! MORE INFO ⬇

TheAromaofBooks 1 - I‘m tagging everyone who specifically said they wanted to participate in the Bingo aspect of the challenge, but ANYONE IS WELCOME. So if you posted a #BookSpin list and now you think the Bingo looks fun – just jump right in!! If you actually didn't want to do Bingo & I tagged you, just ignore it - so sorry to bother you! My tag list is a disaster, so please just let me know if you want added or removed!! ⬇ 2w
TheAromaofBooks 2 - Remember – NO PRESSURE!!!! If this starts to stress you out, just take that page right out of your journal and pretend it never existed!! This challenge is to encourage you to read, not to make you feel like reading is a chore!!!

3 - FREE SPACES can be filled with any book that is NOT already on your list!! ⬇
2w
TheAromaofBooks 4 & final - As a reminder, only the “official” BookSpin/DoubleSpin numbers will count towards giveaway entries. I don‘t want the giveaway to be stacked against people who aren‘t able to read lots of books each month. So basically there is still a maximum of 2 entries possible per month no matter how many books you read from your list. This bingo card is just for fun & glory! 😁

Thanks for playing & happy reading!!!

Onioons Thank you, looking forward to it! 2w
TheAromaofBooks @Zuhkeeyah - For some reason the free spaces keep wanting to hang out together on the bingo board! 😂 2w
TheAromaofBooks @melmes - Yes, just match the books from your list with the numbers on the board - so to score a bingo on the top row, for instance, you would read books 14, 7, 11, and 1 from your list, plus one random (“free“) book that wasn't on your list!! 2w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Maybe I'll get a bingo by reading the past bookspin & doublespin books that I didn't get around to yet and plugging them into those free spaces. 🤣 2w

Good morning, everyone! The moment you have all been waiting for!! Our official #BookSpin number is FIVE!! Our official #DoubleSpin number is TWENTY!! I have thoroughly enjoyed looking at everyone's lists & am really looking forward to seeing your reviews!

My next post will be the #BookSpinBingo card!!!

My tagging/tracking system has changed this year, so if you didn't get tagged PLEASE let me know so I can add you to the (semi) permanent ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont‘d) tag list! I will post “FINISHED“ when I post the last batch of tags so you can tell if you have been missed!!

Below are a few housekeeping items that I would really appreciate if you took a few moments to read. As always, my new masterpost about both #BookSpin & #BookSpinBingo can be found on my blog - https://thearomaofbooks.wordpress.com/bookspin-bookspinbingo-litsy-challenge - & this link is always available in my profile as well. ⬇
2w
TheAromaofBooks 1. Remember, this is a no-pressure challenge!! You can read one or both of these books. You can bail on them. You can bail on the whole challenge and try again next month. Whatever works!! This is supposed to be fun not stressful!! ⬇ 2w
TheAromaofBooks 2. I do have a giveaway at the end of the year. Every BookSpin or DoubleSpin book completed counts as an entry!! In the past, I have tracked these myself, but for 2022 YOU are in charge of tracking your own entries!! To help with this process, I have created a Google Form that can be found here - https://forms.gle/X57ePKzuHpsqLjE5A - You can use this Form two different ways: You can update it throughout the year OR you can wait and fill in ⬇ 2w
See All 49 Comments
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) all the information at the end of the year. If you want to be entered in the giveaway you MUST use this form. However, if you do NOT want to be entered in the giveaway but still want to use the form for organizational purposes, I have set it up so that the personal info/address blank is OPTIONAL - so you can use the form without submitting your name/address. If you do not care about the giveaway you do NOT have to use this form at all ⬇ 2w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) There is more information about how the form works when you click on the link and go to the form because I LOVE overexplaining things!!! You are also ALWAYS welcome to ask me questions!!

4. Even though I don't HAVE to see your reviews I love reading them!! So please feel free to tag me in any and all BookSpin reivews!!

5. For the giveaway, DNFs do count!! The goal for #BookSpin is to get a book off your TBR, so if you decide not to ⬇
2w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) finish it, it's still off the TBR and still counts as a completion in my book!!

6. If you do not finish your #BookSpin/#DoubleSpin book this month it is STILL ELIGIBLE for a giveaway entry as long as you complete it sometime in 2022!! There is space in the form for you both to put down what book you are SUPPOSED to read & then to check off which books you DID read! ⬇
2w
TheAromaofBooks 7. Everyone is welcome to join this challenge!! If you wanted tagged & I missed you, it was completely inadvertent!! Please just let me know that you want to be added to the tag list. You can also let me know if you want to be removed - no hard feelings!! Feel free to jump in & out of this challenge as needed. Also, obviously, getting tagged doesn't mean you HAVE to actually participate!!

2w
TheAromaofBooks 8 & final (FINALLY) - While I don't have time to reply to all of the comments to this post, I do read every one and love seeing which books got picked for you!! I do respond to any direct questions or confusion, so please feel free to ask away if something doesn't make sense or you need some clarifications. Thank you all so much for your enthusiasm, and happy reading!!! 2w
melmes You forgot to tag me 2w
TheAromaofBooks That's all the tags I have listed - if you still haven't been tagged and want to be, please let me know!! 2w

Today's #weeklyforecast ... I may have lost my mind! 😂 As you can see, the windowsill, with May's additions, is now STUFFED full!! The bottom picture is of all of May's chapter-a-day(ish) reads. I'm actually enjoying Gone With the Wind more than I thought I would, and I'm really excited about the various #PemberLittens reads. The Fall of the Ottomans is an intriguing focus on that area of WWI, and As You Wish is for #NYWD The backwards book is ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) this month's #BookSpin because I MAY have already drawn the numbers!!

In the windowsill - I started the tagged book yesterday and am so looking forward to this entire series (hopefully the rest come in the mail this week). I'm still using a random draw to decide what windowsill book comes next. I've left myself more free spaces on my bingo board this month so that I can fill in some of my backlog. I'm actually still stoked about all of ⬇
2w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) these. Maybe I should stop working on my 100% RDR2 completion and spend more evenings reading!! 😁 @Cinfhen 2w

#BookReport - Well, I did winnow a few more out of the windowsill, and should finish the tagged book sometime today. But starting tomorrow I seem to have embroiled myself in a LOT of chapter-a-day books, which will slow down my windowsill reading... and after adding May's books, the windowsill is BURSTING! 😂 While none of the books I read this week were new faves, they were all solid, engaging reads. And looking at the books that are left - ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) I'm still pretty excited to read all of them. However, Scarlet (sequel to Cinder) just came in the mail today (FINALLY) so that will probably end up being next to read. Stay tuned for tomorrow's overstuffed windowsill pic! 😅

Pickpick

A soft pick, I liked this one but didn't love it. I don't want to say too much because it's an #LMPBC read, but I felt like the “sides“/who is fighting who was rather muddled which left me feeling a smidge confused from time to time. I liked the developed religion and the fact that it was real, and that faith and prayers were an important part of the story. An intriguing concept, but the development struggled a bit in places. Still a fun read.

Chrissyreadit I really like your review. I feel like you are spot on. 3w

Big Jump for Robin | Suzanne Wilding

Pickpick

This is fairly typical 1960s horse-girl fare haha The story opens with Robin secretly selling her pony to the neighborhood Obnoxious Rich Guy because she has overheard her parents being very stressed about money and wants to do her part. Robin is very mature and hardworking, yet still felt like a real girl, and I was totally rooting for her. I felt like some of the story could have been a little better developed, but overall a nice little ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) story. I bought this one back in 2005 at an antique store - Mom and my sisters and I used to always go shopping during the big OSU/Michigan game 😂 I was drawn to this one because of the illustrations by Sam Savitt, and even though this book wasn't stellar, I'll probably keep it on the shelves because of Savitt's absolutely delightful drawings.

Pickpick

Only Wodehouse could make me enjoy reading a collection of short stories centered around golf!! Tales told by the "Oldest Member" of the golf club to generally unwilling audiences, these stories are typical Wodehouse fluff. If you aren't into golf and have never read Wodehouse, I probably wouldn't start here, but if Wodehouse is your jam, these were pretty fun, even if a bit ridiculous!!
Published under different US/UK titles because WHY

CarolynM Wonderful 😍 3w
TheAromaofBooks @mabell - It's one of those that was published as one title in the US and a different title in the UK, so that can lead to confusion 😂 And since it's a lot about golf (and of course ridiculous hijinks of all kinds) I don't think it's his most popular work haha These aren't his funniest stories ever, but Wodehouse is one of the few authors where I love his shorts as much as the full-length novels. He has suck a knack for timing. 3w
UwannaPublishme You actually finished a book about golf? P.G. has you under his spell!!! 😆 3w

I can't express how pleased I am with my personal #BookSpin plan this year! The list on the right is my ongoing list of classics/chunksters that I have been wanting to read, and I've read a chapter a day of each month's book until it's finished, which means I've checked off Ivanhoe, David Copperfield, and Of Mice and Men already this year!! I'm about 1/3 of the way through the tagged book, which was April's pick. I'm excited to see which one is ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) next!!!

The list on the left is my #BookSpinBingo list aka May's TBR. I've got some challenge and buddy reads going on. The blank spaces are going to be for “catch up“ books for the challenge reads from past months that I haven't read yet!!

This year's goals included reading more classics, more nonfiction, and more from my own shelves, and I'm actually doing great with all three of those goals so I'm stoked. Several Litsy challenges ⬇

Pickpick

This one was a little too sad for me to give a wholehearted pick - I'm a happy-book girl - but the sadness felt realistic and well-done, not like the author was trying to shock the readers. It had been a while since I had picked up a historical fiction, as it's not usually my jam. Minor complaints - I felt like the two POV voices sounded way too similar, to the point that I sometimes had to flip back a page and see who was talking. I think this ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) would have read better as 3rd person. I have mixed feelings about the fact that Harmon tells us in the prologue that a bunch of people in this wagon train are going to get brutally killed... then the next 240pgs is getting attached to those people, knowing they're doomed. It made the book difficult to connect to emotionally... but on the other hand, I can't imagine how upset I would have been if I hadn't known it was coming! But I often ⬇ 3w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) felt like the deaths and devastation in this story were pronounced somewhat clinically (especially for 1st person POV). At any rate, an overall very good read and reminder of what people have been willing to do to try and make a better life for themselves and their families. I've visited some of the places mentioned here, like Chimney Rock and Scott's Bluff, and driven across Nebraska a couple of times - the idea of WALKING that far is ⬇ 3w

Oh my gosh, the last week of April!?!?! What is happening!?!? It's been a cold & rainy month here, but things are looking up right now - sun is shining & I actually got a few early veggies in the garden yesterday!!

At any rate, if you're interested in playing along with #BookSpin, #DoubleSpin, and/or #BookSpinBingo for May, it's already time to start thinking about your lists!!! With my new 2022 system, I am using the SAME TAG LIST all year⬇

TheAromaofBooks cont'd) so if you are tagged on this post, you already automatically on the tag list for May. If you would like to be ADDED or REMOVED from the tag list, please just let me know!!

Below are the basics of challenge, plus the link to the very rambly explanation of the rules of the challenge, plus the link to the Google Form where you can enter your BookSpin & DoubleSpin reads for the end-of-the-year giveaway!!

Can't wait to see your ⬇

1/5 - The rules for this challenge can be found by reading my masterpost on my blog (off Litsy) - https://thearomaofbooks.wordpress.com/bookspin-bookspinbingo-litsy-challenge - but the basics: if you want to play, make a list of 20 books you've been meaning to read & tag me when you post it!!

2/5 - You do NOT have to participate in the Bingo part of the challenge if that isn't your thing!! You can just read the ⬇

3/5 - Just a reminder that the rules here are pretty loose!! If you have a huge/challenging book, feel free to let it take up more than one square. Some people struggle with super specific lists & prefer to go with categories (i.e. library book, Netgalley, mystery, from the ⬇

This year, I have a list of challenging books that I am using to read the BookSpin number from each month, but then make a list of my month's TBR to use for the bingo part. If you wish to participate in the end-of-the-year giveaway, each completed (or DNF'd) BS/DS read counts as an entry!! This year, everyone is in charge of tracking their OWN ENTRIES for this giveaway!! This is being done via Google Form. You are also welcome to use this form even if you don't want to enter the ⬇

I've finished 15 books this month yet the windowsill looks as full as ever!! I have a lot of reading to do before May!! However, in May we are going on VACATION (cue happy music!!) which should mean some catching up. Anyway, this week's top priority will be the tagged book for #LMPBC. Beyond that, we will see where the random-draw fates take me. I should finish Where the Lost Wander today as well. Cannot believe there is only ⬇️

#BookReport x2 weeks since I was sick last weekend - the windowsill is starting to look a little more manageable as I spent much of my recovery time reading!! I also finished several chapter-a-day reads (The Other Bennet Sister, North & South, London Under). I had three Cinderella retellings (besides Cinder) for the #fairytalereadingchallenge this month, but the two I started didn't speak to me. Despite enjoying the Waterfire Saga by Jennifer ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Donnelly, Stepsister just wasn't speaking to me. And The Cinderella Deal... wow, the MC was just way too Quirky!!(TM) for me to handle. I started the tagged book yesterday - it's a long-lost #LMPBC book that appeared and since the round is already long-over, the owner of this book told me I could take my time and still read it if I wanted to haha It's good so far, but it's weird because the two POV voices sound a LOT a like. I think this book has been on my TBR since it first was published in 2012 haha Worth the wait - creative and fun with likable characters. I did feel like the place cyborgs had in society wasn't very well explained, but on the whole I really enjoyed this one. And since it's been on my list ten years, I don't have to wait for the rest of the series! Bought all the others on Pango so they should be here next week!!

Mehso-so

Well, I went ahead and finished this one yesterday - I got behind on the chapter-a-day schedule when I was sick over the weekend and then had no idea where I was supposed to be, so I just went for the gold! 😂 I'm glad to have read this one, but can't particularly say I enjoyed it. I found Margaret to be sanctimonious and boring. Gaskell's only method for forwarding the plot was killing off another character so that we could watch Margaret be ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) sad and strong and her eyes shimmer with unshed tears. She's surrounded by child-adults who seem incapable of doing anything besides wringing their hands and sighing over how they wish things were different. Thornton is the only one with any kind of actual character development and that's covered in about five pages towards the end. The book could have been a lot more interesting if we'd actually spent time on Thornton learning to ⬇ 1mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) appreciate his workers and setting up programs for them, but that happens off-page for the most part because we're busy watching Margaret be sad about 79th person in her life who has died in the last year. I can see why people are fond of this one, but I would have bailed if I'd been trying to get through more than a chapter a day. I didn't find the romance particularly believable (or interesting) especially on Thornton's part and the ⬇ 1mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) long swaths of nothing happening except for people having feelings took up way too much of the book for my personal tastes.

However, really enjoyed reading this with the #PemberLittens - I'm reading books I wouldn't otherwise pick up and it's been fun to explore some classics I've avoided!!

MicrobeMom Great review! I agree with many points. I have enjoyed this read despite the flaws and I look forward to finishing it In two days! Thanks for participating! 1mo
Daisey I agree with so many of the points you made here. I just kept wanting more, and you're right that some of what I wanted did happen with Thornton but it was off the page and that was frustrating to me. I wanted to see theose changes and that growth to bring the two of them together actually occuring in the story. 1mo
sprainedbrain Love this review! 4w
TheAromaofBooks @MicrobeMom @sprainedbrain - I may have been a bit harsh in this review 😂 I didn't hate it, I just felt like it lacked forward motion a LOT! 4w
TheAromaofBooks @Daisey - I think that's really part of the issue - maybe Gaskell didn't feel comfortable delving too deeply into the masculine psyche or something, but I think this book would have been significantly more interesting if it had focused more on the changes Thornton made both inwardly and outwardly. He changes more than anyone else in the book, but it's somewhat hard to see because it's almost entirely off-page. 4w
eeclayton Couldn't agree more. I too would have bailed if it wasn't for the #Pemberlittens 4w
nanuska_153 "Because we are busy watching Margaret be sad about the 79th person in her life who has died" ?? 100% agree with your review. I don't know what's more unbelievable, Thornton's exaggerated love, or Margaret love that's so sudden that it could happen the same way in page 10 instead of 350 3w
TheAromaofBooks @nanuska_153 - I was so confused that he literally just fell in love with her as soon as he saw her and then is obsessed with her even though she hates pretty much everything about him... until she doesn't?!?!!? And it was like every time the author needed something to happen, the only thing she could think of to do was to kill somebody off!! 😂 I see why people like this one, but it was not for me! 3w
nanuska_153 @TheAromaofBooks The fact that the author kept killing people was hilarious. Margaret's love is so nonsensical that I was surprised Thornton understood she was in love cause she offered money, I thought she was just being nice for once xD Thornton was so intense it ended up being funny, I didn't enjoy the book, but him angrily delivering delicious fruit will be forever in my memory as one of the funniest moments in literature. 3w
TheAromaofBooks @nanuska_153 - Oh my gosh, the fruit scene was THE BEST. And honestly, I've been in a similar situation before... I gotta do something nice, but I don't have to be happy about it 😂 3w

Yesterday was a bittersweet day - I finished the Swallows & Amazons series! I read the first book back in 2019 and have taken my time reading the other 11 books, savoring every page. I LOVE this series! I think I'm going to start over and reread them all. Great Northern? did not disappoint - another delightful adventure with the entire gang. I wish there were another dozen of these books to read because I can't even express how much I've enjoyed ⬇

TheAromaofBooks @julieclair - I vaguely remember my dad reading Swallows & Amazons out loud to us as kids, but I went in basically blind when I read it a couple years ago. Since then, I've read a few books from the series a year and literally every single one has just been delightful, although it's made me a little discontent... I used to think I had a perfect childhood, until I realized my parents never let me sail & camp on a lake unsupervised for weeks! 😂 4w
TheAromaofBooks @SayersLover - This is the final book in the series and is fun because it in corporates so many of the characters from the earlier books. I thoroughly enjoyed it!!! 4w

Another soft pick here as I had some mixed feelings. I actually loved this concept and felt like a lot of the scenes were a lot of fun. However, this felt like two stories and like the authors couldn't decide which story should get the focus. Despite the fact that Carey & James are the main love story, the book felt like it was a lot more about the Tripps. This made the ending feel rushed - I really wanted to see some resolution between the ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) the Tripps as a couple and between them and Carey. It felt hard to believe that Melly could have been like a “second mother“ to Carey all those years and then basically turn into such a bitch towards her, and I really wanted to see that relationship healed or moved forward from - something.

But on the whole, this is fun and a bit silly and I did enjoy it - I just don't see myself rereading it.

This wasn't my favorite Bridgerton, mainly because the first half lacks Bridgertons - what I enjoy about this series is the siblings en masse, & at first we only have Eloise. I felt like the resolution w/ Phillip's children was somewhat rushed, but overall this was some fun fluff w/ sizzle.

Okay, so I actually did read several books while I was lounging about pretending like my insides weren't waiting to attack me. However, I was a smidge feverish during some of them, so it may have impacted my perspective 😂 At any rate, please excuse the upcoming small review binge.

I enjoy nonfiction about random topics, so a book focused on the London under London sounded like a good fit for me. Unfortunately, I found this book ultimately disappointing, mainly because Ackroyd didn't particularly take the time to organize his information or go in depth about many of the things he mentioned. Instead, this book felt very fragmentary, almost like an outline for a book instead of the actual book. It's only 205 very small pages ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) and contains no maps! He would toss out intriguing factoids, but never follow up on them. In the end, I just found myself wanting more. This book didn't really teach me anything, and Ackroyd seemed more interested in emphasizing (constantly) how “mysterious“ the underground is and how it's associated with things like death and darkness, yet also safety and security... but then just kind of wandering away without really getting into it. ⬇ 1mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) There is a lot of potential here, and this wasn't a BAD book per se, as I did find bits of it interesting, I just wish that this book was about twice as long and full of maps! 😂

Nine Lives | Peter Swanson

Pickpick

Nine seemingly unconnected individuals each receive a letter in the mail with a list of (the same) nine names. It seems like a prank - until each of those people start getting murdered. While this wasn't exactly a slow book, it was slow compared to Swanson's usual frenetic pace. There isn't really an investigation - instead, each section (which counts down from nine as people are killed) hops between the different people and what is happening ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) with them as different ones of them either completely ignore the circumstances or try to fit together the pieces. This definitely wasn't my favorite Swanson book because of the pace and because part of the story just didn't jive with me (spoiler below) but it was still an engaging read with a generous nod to Agatha Christie.

TheAromaofBooks This book was a homage to Christie's And Then There Were None. However, in ATTWN the victims (theoretically) deserve to be killed because they have gotten away with with murder in the past. Here, the killer decides to murder the (adult) children of those he blames for his sister's death. Consequently this one really felt like a downer since (mostly) innocent people were killed for revenge instead of vigilante justice being handed out. 1mo

LKK526 @TheAromaofBooks I liked this one too and your spoiler put it very well👍 2w
TheAromaofBooks @LKK526 - Thank you! I did enjoy this one but as an homage to Christie, I felt like Swanson sort of missed the motivation of Christie's murderer - it was harder to appreciate the wrongness of the murderer's sister's death when he'd just spent the entire book killing innocent people, too. 2w
LKK526 @TheAromaofBooks I also thought his finding the key book was kind of rushed. Agree with your comment on Christie. Been a fan of hers since I was 14 many moons ago. But considering all the crap out there I was at least entertained. 2w

Panpan

It's been quite a while since I've rated a book as a pan, but this one was pretty bad haha Although I will admit that I softened to it a little when I found out it was published in 1988, making some of the themes a little more palatable. A lot has changed in 30+ years! However, that doesn't stop this one from being basically unbelievable, with a federal agent staying with a civilian as a cover story so he can find out who/where illegal marijuana ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) is being growing in the area. There were multiple instances where Kyle assumes that Jenny is going to do his cooking/cleaning/laundry as well that I just found super distasteful - I do the cooking/cleaning/laundry in our household, but I'm in a committed relationship with a husband who does his part to keep our household running smoothly as well, unlike Kyle who is basically just mooching around. Jenny was borderline stupid. She's also ⬇ 1mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) a widow at age 25 because her husband died in a car wreck a year earlier - but don't worry, we're told repeatedly that Jenny is “over“ her husband's death/he's part of her past/she doesn't really feel sad about it any more. After a year?? I wasn't expecting her to be in some kind of deep depression, but her attitude towards her dead husband (we're reassured he was awesome and they had an awesome life) did not feel very realistic. I'm not⬇ 1mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) exactly sure why she needed to be a widow anyway. Finally, I get that marijuana was viewed differently in the 80s, but I do know people who use it recreationally and it has not led them to try “hard“ drugs and none of them have died. The sentence “I've met old alcoholics but never old drug users“ really just... I don't even know where to start with that, other than to say I do know some old marijuana smokers 😂 ANYWAY this book was ⬇ 1mo

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) super short so I skimmed through to the end. Another old Kindle book that may not have been worth the free price I paid for it!!

It's amazing how you can find #ThingsInCommon between two books that are really 100% opposites 😂 @Clwojick

Clwojick Agreed! I had so much fun planning my month. Some books are complete opposites yet still had the same word in the title, or similar cover colours. Such an easy challenge, but it‘s been so fun. 1mo

I couldn't resist finishing this one, mostly because Mary was driving me CRAZY these last couple of days! 😂 I overall really enjoyed this one, but I am not sure I would have liked it as much if I hadn't been reading just two chapters a day, because the story was really slow in parts, which I think would have bogged me down more if I had been reading this all in one go. 463 pages was just tooooo long for the amount of story we have here. I did ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) like Mary and felt like she grew as a person, but some of the other characters felt uneven (especially Charlotte - felt like sending her into bitch mode was a bit strong) and the final drama went on rather too long for my liking. So one that I liked but not one I see myself rereading. However, I'm super glad the #PemberLittens chose this one, as it has been fun to see everyone else's thoughts as well!! 1mo

#WeeklyForecast - So the windowsill doesn't look dramatically different from last week! I did finish The Toll last night, and you can see that I scratched off two ebooks last week. I'm hoping to spend some time reading some fluffy books this week because I'm going to be very busy and I spent most of last week finishing the Arc of a Scythe series, which was rather intense - I'm ready for a break!! Started the tagged ebook last night which has ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) been (unread) on my Kindle since 2016, so we will see how that goes - I've only read the first few pages. My chapter-a-day books (not pictured) always take up more time at the beginning of the month until I start finishing them. Both #PemberLitten reads are winding down and I'm almost finished with my current nonfiction read as well. It's been cold and rainy all week, but next week is looking warmer (although still rainy lol). Ready for ⬇ 1mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) some spring vibes!!! Planning to go on a day trip with my parents/sister/husband on Friday including an antique store that Mom is always telling me has an awesome book booth, so we will see if I find anything good!!! @Cinfhen 1mo
Prairiegirl_reading I‘m ready for spring too!! We‘ve had so much snow this year and we are in for another storm. It won‘t be good for our flood situation. 😞 1mo

Bookzombie Every time I see Cinder on your windowsill, I tell myself I need to finish the last book in the series. Then I start to think should I reread the other three first. 🤔 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @Prairiegirl_reading - Hopefully the weather calms down soon!! While things have been rainy/gloomy here, it hasn't been dumping rain every day, so we aren't in a flood situation yet. Supposed to be more storms today, though! 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @Bookzombie - I am trying to finish one more series before I pick up Cinder and start another! Somehow I've found myself in the middle of way too many 😂 1mo
