"London, 1889. Veronica Speedwell and her natural historian beau Stoker are summoned by Sir Hugo Montgomerie, head of Special Branch. He has a personal request on behalf of his goddaughter, Euphemia Hathaway. After years of traveling the world, her eldest brother, Jonathan, heir to Hathaway Hall, was believed to have been killed in the catastrophic eruption of Krakatoa a few years before. But now a man matching Jonathan's description and carrying his possessions has arrived at Hathaway Hall with no memory of his identity or where he has been. Could this man truly be Jonathan, back from the dead? Or is he a devious impostor, determined to gain ownership over the family's most valuable possessions-a legendary parure of priceless Rajasthani jewels? It's a delicate situation, and Veronica is Sir Hugo's only hope. Veronica and Stoker agree to go to Hathaway Hall to covertly investigate the mysterious amnesiac. Veronica is soon shocked to find herself face-to-face with a ghost from her past. To help Sir Hugo discover the truth, she must open doors to her own history that she long believed to be shut for good"--

Ugh. 🙄 Once upon a time I was a teenager who had yet to be steeped in the well-worn, time-wasting, conflict-generating tropes of romance novels. In the decades since, I have had my fill. Which is why I was so profoundly annoyed to encounter them in a beloved historical mystery series with a romance subplot between characters I consider too smart to get caught up in this BULLSHIT. 1/3

Robotswithpersonality 2/3 My only consolation is that I don't see Raybourn getting away with pulling this crap in more than one book in her series. I will happily read the next to help wash this triteness out of my brain. 10mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/3 For those wishing to spring to the book's defense regarding the quality of the mystery/caper, know that I skimmed the second half and read the denouement because I could not stand watching these characters make these ridiculous decisions. Please, please let the next one not involve cliches I flee by skipping pages. 10mo

Robotswithpersonality @dabbe Pretty sure they were the first things I said and did after I finished the book! 🤦🏼‍♂️ 10mo
julesG I marked the book a pick, but I had the same issues. Why did Raybourn make their affair into a YA? I hope the next one does better. (out today, btw) 10mo
Robotswithpersonality @julesG I still have to read 8, hopefully by the time I get to it, my library will have 9. 10mo
julesG Also, I let authors get away with a lot of tropes because I mostly listen to audiobooks at 2.0+ speed. And I really only listen to Veronica Speedwell novels. 10mo
julesG Now that you mention it, I can't remember much about book 8. The affair wasn't the strongest part of the story. 🤔 But it had a lot of Tiberius. I'd like to see more of Stoker's brothers. 10mo
Robotswithpersonality @julesG Happy to have a lil more Tiberius. 😉 10mo
rretzler I used to really look forward to this series, but they seem to have fallen off lately. Unfortunately, it appears that I read 8, but didn‘t write down my rating. I remember thinking that I wasn‘t sure if I wanted to preorder 9 though. 10mo
rretzler Apparently, I decided to give Raybourn another chance as I just opened my Kindle to see that A Grave Robbery has magically appeared this AM! 10mo

I swear, the most devastating critiques come from those who are disappointed, not angry.

I hate when that happens.

Now, to catch up on finished books...
Number 7 in the Veronica Speedwell mysteries was one of my favorites of the lot! We get some unexpected backstory for Veronica, along with the usual adventure. Veronica and Stoker have some of their usual moments 😍. Loved this one!

Texreader I did not know there‘s a seventh book! Yay! 2y
Deblovestoread @texreader. And the 8th was just released 2y

Finished this audiobook while making the pictured dinner - this series never disappoints! Anytime Deanna Raybourn publishes a new volume, it draws me back to Audible so I can have all of them on one platform. 😂

Veronica is a marvelous hero and her relationship with Stoker is complicated and real, even if she does describe him as looking like a “disreputable pirate” more than once. I can‘t wait for book #8, coming in March!

Julsmarshall I feel the same! The “disreputable pirate” gets me every time! 2y

Started a bit slow but when it finally got cracking, I couldn‘t put it down! Love Veronica and Stoker, especially when they are in the hunt. Interesting getting to know more about Veronica‘a past in tbr is one, can‘t wait for the next!

CogsOfEncouragement I‘m reading A Curious Beginning for the first time now. Not quite halfway through yet. 2y

Loving my #currentread on this gorgeous Sunday! I have too much work to do for that coming week to go to the Texas Book Festival but at least I‘ve found a few minutes to read!

Librariana Sorry you couldn't make it to the Texas Book Festival, but enjoy the lovely weather and your read 😊 2y

While I definitely wouldn't say this is one of the better books in the series, Veronica and Stoker are always fun.
Side note: When I sent this picture to @LittleMouse5708 with a joke about ignoring responsibilities this morning, her response was that it would make a great Litsy picture. We clearly have our priorities straight! 🤣

Another good installment in this series. Veronica and Stoker investigate a personal matter for Sir Hugo Montgomerie and encounter old passions. I love these books, it's one of the two series I'm up-to-date on.

Instead of the well-plotted and cheeky mystery and romance one can usually expect from this series, this installment was overwrought and the plot was sloppy.

I love this series. This wasn‘t my favorite purely because I was so stressed and anxious throughout. It really needs to be read in one sitting preferably with the next book in the series (which isn‘t out yet😆) next to you. The author has a few things to put to rights in my mind and I need that book asap. Veronica and stoker still have my whole heart. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It‘s Veronica Speedwell so of course it‘s a pick…BUT…I must confess that this time around Raybourn used some devices I don‘t love which lessened my enjoyment of the story. That being said, it didn‘t lessen my enthusiasm for this series and these characters or my excitement to see what happens next. Veronica and Stoker remain two of my favorite people to spend an afternoon with and I look forward to doing so with the next book.

I don‘t even know how I missed this in February but I did. I make up for that oversight today—hot cup of tea, grey skies, sleet/freezing rain…Everything I need for an afternoon of murder and mayhem and Veronica Speedwell.

FlowerFairy Love this series! Have you read her Lady Jane Grey series as well? 3y
TracyReadsBooks @FlowerFairy Such a great series! And yes, I‘ve read some but not all of the Lady Jane Grey series. I should get caught up on it too! 3y

Wow! Just when you think you know a character! I love Veronica Speedwell, and this addition to the series is excellent, with plot twists, twists within twists, and an interesting revelation. The only problem is waiting for the next book!

#20in4 #Readathon

I love delving into the world of the unorthodox Victorian, crime-solving Veronica Speedwell. She is so clever and adventurous and independent. This book revisits her past for some good twists and eyebrow raising surprises.

I took my time reading this one and just savoring it. Though I think a series reread is in my future. This is my favorite series and hope the author keeps writing Veronica and Stoker adventures!

#20in4 this weekend, I won‘t say I‘m currently in a reading slump, just say I‘m reading slower than usual. I‘m in a mood for what I want to read.

I‘m currently reading the tagged book, but haven‘t even started either of my #LMPBC books 🤦‍♀️

So those are my goals for this weekend readathon.

Andrew65 Great to have you with us, good luck. 😊👍 3y

This series never disappoints! This installment involves an impostor (maybe) and a jewel theft but no murder, which was kind of refreshing.

I am not sure how I missed preordering this book, as this is a great series from one of my favorite authors. I have corrected my mistake, and am ready to jump into another adventure with Veronica Speedwell.

adoramichaels Have this on my wish list after attending the virtual launch event for this book! She was such a fun person to listen to and was so nice!! 3y

I picked up my preorder today of the tagged book! And yes, I‘ve already started reading it! I think a reread is due this year! I‘ve never reread the books.

I also bought Crescent City book 2. I wasn‘t planning on it, but it was there and I needed it!

I also ordered my #LMPBC book for the next fantasy round. It just wasn‘t on their shelves!

“In AN IMPOSSIBLE IMPOSTOR, Veronica and her love interest, Stoker, are called upon to identify someone that Veronica knew long ago -- and who was previously presumed to be dead.”

Sounds like another good one.

Finished an ARC of the next book in the Veronica Speedwell series. I love this series so much. Veronica and Stoker get home after their last adventure to immediately be called on again to investigate if someone assumed dead and now returned is who he says he is. We learn something big about Veronica's past. Something I would never have guessed. Ends on a little bit of a cliffhanger. Out 2/15. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
