The Rental Heart and Other Fairytales
The Rental Heart and Other Fairytales | Kirsty Logan
16 posts | 10 read | 17 to read
Winner of the Scott PrizeTwenty tales of lust and loss. These stories feature clockwork hearts, lascivious queens, paper men, island circuses, and a flooded world. On the island of Skye, an antlered girl and a tiger-tailed boy resolve never to be friends but can they resist their unique connection? In an alternative 19th-century Paris, a love triangle emerges between a man, a woman, and a coin-operated boy. A teenager deals with his sister's death by escaping from their tiny Scottish island but will she let him leave? In 1920s New Orleans, a young girl comes of age in her mother's brothel. Some of these stories are radical retellings of classic tales, some are modern-day fables, but all explore substitutions for love.

I picked up this bracing collection of fantastical lesbian short stories because I was perusing past winners of the Polari prize for queer fiction. I had already read two more recent novels by Scottish author Kirsty Logan & was pleased to see the genesis of one—The Graceleepers—in a story here. And so many other intriguing, imaginative tales. #LGBTQ

The day after I met Grace—her pierced little mouth, her shitkicker boots, her hand as small as goosebumps writing numbers on my palm. The day after I met her, I went to the heart rental place.

I loved this collection. Loved it. Fairy tale retellings. Steampunk stories. Weird stories that make you contemplate humanity and society. Logan has a very visceral and direct writing style and all of these stories pack some sort of punch (so to speak). I know I‘ll be looking into her other works.
If you like Angela Carter and Angela Readman you‘ll more than likely like this collection.

Paperback.Propensity Oooh I need it 5y
Kalalalatja Yes! I‘m so happy when I see people post about Logan. I don‘t think she is that well known, but I love her 👌 5y

A little late - but for this week I‘m planning on focusing on my kindle books... so often ignored, sadly, for the shiny immediately present physical books on my shelves. 🙄😄 #weeklyforecast

Bookzombie 😄 I ignore my physical books for library books and don‘t even think about my Kindle books very often. Poor Kindle. Lol. 5y

“Once upon a time there was an empress, trapped as a ghost in the ruins of a jewelled palace, cursed to find another soul to take her place. At least, that's what the empress heard. But, as it turned out, stories can have any ending you like.” - Kirsty Logan, The Rental Heart and Other Fairytales

I was really surprised that I only found one book with #heartinthetitle on my shelves! Somehow I feel like I hear and see a lot about heart-books, but maybe I am just beginning to imagine things 😄 anyhow, I love this collection, and if anybody is looking for a heart-titled-book, this is a great pick! 👌

My favourite book I read during the #24in48 readathon. I've loved her novel and other short story collection, so it was great to read her debut and see where she started. And I must say, Logan started out strong! There's steampunk, fairytales retellings and some weird stories in this book. I loved it! I am already planning a reread, so I can enjoy it when I am not sleepy 😄

I was really impressed with this collection! The author creates or reimagines stories that confront our humanity and encourage us to look at our world in new ways. She uses emotion and diversity to great effect, and may have created a new collection of tales to share with generations to come.

Logan's writing style is intimate and direct in a way that made me fall in love. I struggle to remember some of the stories, but on the other hand there were some that were pretty amazing and that both filled me with wonder and left me unsettled.
