Tomb of Sand
Tomb of Sand | Geetanjali Shree
WINNER OF THE 2022 INTERNATIONAL BOOKER PRIZEA playful, feminist, and utterly original epic set in contemporary northern India, about a family and the inimitable octogenarian matriarch at its heart."A tale tells itself. It can be complete, but also incomplete, the way all tales are. This particular tale has a border and women who come and go as they please. Once you've got women and a border, a story can write itself . . ."Eighty-year-old Ma slips into a deep depression after the death of her husband. Despite her family's cajoling, she refuses to leave her bed. Her responsible eldest son, Bade, and dutiful, Reebok-sporting daughter-in-law, Bahu, attend to Ma's every need, while her favorite grandson, the cheerful and gregarious Sid, tries to lift her spirits with his guitar. But it is only after Sid's younger brother--Serious Son, a young man pathologically incapable of laughing--brings his grandmother a sparkling golden cane covered with butterflies that things begin to change. With a new lease on life thanks to the cane's seemingly magical powers, Ma gets out of bed and embarks on a series of adventures that baffle even her unconventional feminist daughter, Beti. She ditches her cumbersome saris, develops a close friendship with a hijra, and sets off on a fateful journey that will turn the family's understanding of themselves upside down.Rich with fantastical elements, folklore, and exuberant wordplay, Geetanjali Shree's magnificent novel explores timely and timeless topics, including Buddhism, global warming, feminism, Partition, gender binary, transcending borders, and the profound joys of life. Elegant, heartbreaking, and funny, it is a literary masterpiece that marks the American debut of an extraordinary writer.Translated from the Hindi by Daisy RockwellAuthor's name pronounced: Ghee-TAHN-juh-lee Shree

I really enjoyed this epic novel. Despite its length, it was very readable, and is equal parts hilarious and heartwarming. The last part of the book was so compelling and turned everything in the story on its head for me. A story about borders and rules and prejudice, and one woman who refuses all of it in the end. I won‘t forget Ma for a long time.

Aimeesue Reading this one now. I agree, It‘s fantastic. (edited) 1y

This book has been a great companion on my vacation this week! Long enough that I only had to bring one book with me, but very entertaining and readable. I‘ve wanted to read it since it won the Booker last year and I‘m so glad I finally am. It‘s wonderful.

Wow, what a read.

An elderly woman takes to the bed after her husband dies before she suddenly moves in with her daughter.

I had heard so much about the journey this woman takes and the physical journey happens quite late, but the personal on starts straight off. For who is she after her husband‘s death?

I learned so much about Indian culture and family culture, but it also covers the India Pakistan tension/ conflict.

Cathythoughts Sounds great ! Stacked. 1y

Absolutely beautiful language here, but I‘m caring for a 91 year-old mother who won‘t get out of bed, and this is NOT the time to be reading this. I‘ll return it to my TBR list and will try again at a later date.

“She had grown tired of breathing for them, feeling their feelings, hearing their desires, carrying their animosities. She was tired of all of them, and she wanted to glide into the wall with a tremor …” (p.24)

When someone gives you an Amazon gift card, what else to do but order a few books you can‘t get from the library? Tomb of Sand arrived from a bookstore in Delhi, which was very cool.

My April pick was the winner of the International Booker- a JOY to read. The language/translation is so playful, the story covers, well, everything, & it‘s all told with a big smile on its face.

Shutting down after the death of her husband, Ma‘s family rally round. But she needs time to readjust, then head out on her new adventure into her past, her friends & events of partition.

Beautiful out-there touching. Plus talking crows.

Well, THIS is interesting… Here in Litsy, I was viewing a post about Shuggie Bain that reminded me that I hadn‘t yet looked into the Booker Prize announcements. The interwebs say the tagged book is a winner, so I came back here to read more and NO ONE has posted about this?! Seems incredible. Who else besides me wants to read this? Tho, I am wondering about availability- could that be a reason no one has yet shared?

charl08 I have it out from the library, but it's a bit of a brick. Intimidating! 2y
Liz_M Must be a litsy glitch -- when i click on the title there are a handful of posts. 2y

willaful It's available in print, though apparently not yet digitized. Weirdly, it was originally published in 2018. I'm surprised it was eligible, though I don't know the criteria. 2y
BkClubCare @willaful - I might suppose it is the translation. 2y
Ruthiella I do want to read it, but it‘s SO LONG! It does sound amazing, though. I agree. 2y

Ruthiella @BkClubCare 😂 Totally! Don‘t fear the big book! 2y
Readerann I was surprised that neither my city nor county libraries have this, and my local indies say it‘s not published yet (available next Jan.)! I ended up ordering it from Book Depository. Not quite ready to tackle it yet because I just finished a chunkster. 😁 2y
BkClubCare @Readerann - and… some of it, has been Litsy glitch. I have been searching for books and MANY are coming at me as “be the first to post!!! “. Um, wrong!?! There is no way. I am talking about beloved classics 😱🤦🏻‍♀️ (edited) 2y

Lovely news to wake up despite the utter grimness of things. Happy for Geetanjali Shree & translator Daisy Rockwell for winning the #internationalbookerprize2022 I believe it's the first for Indian literature, & indeed South Asian lit more broadly. I stole this pic off of Merve Emre's twitter because I like the energy here 🙂

I haven't yet had the time+focus to devote to Books of Jacob, but was so sure it was going to win. This is a fun surprise.

LeahBergen Very cool! I think I read it was the first winner translated from Hindi? 2y
batsy @LeahBergen Yes! I saw translator Arunava Sinha say that it was the first for a Hindi novel & first for an Indian and/or South Asian novel, which is very cool indeed 🎉 2y

Centique That was probably your review that got me excited for it in the first place 😂 2y
batsy @Centique I think it's a book you'll like, Paula! It's a bit of a chunkster but goes by very fast because of the short chapters and structure. I have a soft spot for a few others on the shortlist but am happy that this won, and would have been had some of my other faves won as well 🙂 2y
TheKidUpstairs This one wasn't even on my radar until today's announcement, but it sounds so good! I'm excited to add it to my list. May have to be a chunkster summer! 2y
TheKidUpstairs Apparently it's not available in Canada right now! Hopefully this win pushes it into our stores. 2y
batsy @TheKidUpstairs I hope it gets a North American deal soon and I'm sure it will 🙌🏾 2y

I can't summarise my thoughts; it's a book that I'll be thinking about for a long time. I love the way it flows & how the narrative takes its time & wanders. Much like Mataji herself, it makes no apologies for where it goes. It makes me think I've not read enough big, vast, & deep books by women writers & that I must remedy this. It feels very “free” & uninhibited & I love the idea of (older) women taking up space like this in life & on the page:

batsy “The page is a stage”, to quote from the book. I don‘t know Hindi but this reads like the translation was an immense labour of love, what with the references to myths, scripture, other works of literature, as well as the imagery & the wordplay, the freewheeling style that also needs to be disciplined because all of the threads can‘t just be left to unravel but must be pulled taut & woven into this complex tapestry. #internationalbookerprize2022 3y

Suet624 My computer is glitching a bit, so I hope this comment comes through. Your note that you love the idea of an older woman taking up space rings so many bells of “I must read“! It's hard as an older woman... you start to become more and more invisible to kin and strangers. So off I go to find this one. 3y
batsy @Suet624 I hear you! I love that the International Booker shortlist has two older/ailing women staking their claim ... Elena Knows is the other one. 3y

I‘ve finally finished the final book off the #InternationalBookerPrize2022 shortlist, and I‘m a bit floored. I loved it.

It‘s an ‘experimental‘ novel. The story rambles off all over the place, and is picked up by any passing narrator, friend of the family, wall, crow. And there is such a joy in the language, whether Hindi or English - it‘s delightful fun.

Then in the final third of the book, the story takes over and had me in bits.

rockpools This is a story of mothers and daughters (and sons), caring, how much/little we know another person, generations, gender, history, home and borders. There is SO much to unpack in here. My heart broke for Ma. I‘m furious for Rosie. And I empathised horribly with Beti. And then I discovered how shockingly little I knew about a piece of history I should know something about. This is a lot. It‘s also quite beautiful. And there are crows. (edited) 3y

A story where the narrative style is almost fairytale-like and playful, takes place in India. We follow an 80-year-old grandmother who falls into depression after her husband's death, and while taking care of her, we meet her family ... their daily chores, life, relationships, thoughts. Throughout the story, I had a feeling that the author wanted to say something, make a statement, and we only get to the point in the last part (the book is … 👇

Simona … divided into three parts), and the whole time I was wondering about what I'm reading, what is the point. In general, the main theme is the border - between people, between countries, in relationships, gender ... Very readable, with gut-wrenching last few chapters, but at least 200 pages too long. 3y
Simona The main point of the story has a strong (sensitive) historic background, and since I think that the details around this are a big spoiler, I advise caution in reading the reviews. 🧐 #internationalbookerprize2022 3y
BarbaraBB Thanks for this review. Maybe one day, after finishing 3y

Leftcoastzen @BarbaraBB how‘s that going ? I‘m interested but not sure I‘m up to a chunkster since I can‘t seem to finish the skinny ones. 3y
Simona @BarbaraBB @Leftcoastzen It‘s surprisingly quick read. The paper is thick, some chapters are only a half page long, the new chapters always begins in right side of the book, so there is a lot empty pages … and writing style, prose is really easy to read. So don‘t be afraid, it isn‘t such a chunkster as it looks. 3y
BarbaraBB That‘s reassuring 😘 3y
BarbaraBB @Leftcoastzen It is difficult. I am about 200 pages in. Lots of names and jumping in style and time. I should give it my utmost concentration but I can‘t just read only this book, so I keep reading others in between - which doesn‘t help. Not giving up though! 3y
Cathythoughts Lovely picture 💫 3y
