Sally-Ann | SUSAN. SCARLETT
9 posts | 6 read | 4 to read
The Marchioness's face changed. ... She turned to Ann. "What is your name, dear?" "Ann." "Would you mind being Sally for this one afternoon?" When her boss succumbs to influenza on the day of a high society wedding, perky young Ann Lane, assistant cosmetician at the elegant Maison Pertinax, is urgently called to a Sussex castle to make up the bride, the kind and understanding Lady Mona. Then a bridesmaid falls ill too and threatens the visual effects carefully planned by Cousin Dennis, and Ann (who just happens to be the perfect size) fatefully agrees to impersonate her. She makes a hit-and a considerable impression on the best man, Sir Timothy Munster. Ann slips quietly away at the end of the night, but both Sir Timothy and the glamorous Cora Bolt, who expects to marry him one day, are determined-for very different reasons-to discover her true identity. Sally-Ann is the second of twelve charming, page-turning romances published under the pseudonym "Susan Scarlett" by none other than beloved children's author and novelist Noel Streatfeild. Out of print for decades, they were rediscovered by Greyladies Books in the early 2010s, and Dean Street Press and Furrowed Middlebrow are delighted now to make all twelve available to a wider audience. Ann was a bit too noble, and her family (especially Bunny) was a bit twee, but I still loved this book. You can always count on Susan Scarlett for escapist fluff. 😄

#FurrowedMiddleBrowClub

Ruthiella I agree, it‘s a bit formulaic and the Bunny side story was a bit much. But from time to time, this kind of Cinderella story is fun to read. 😊 7h
LeahBergen I kind of wanted to go to her for a beauty treatment (just to see how they‘ve changed over the years) 😆 4h

Hello, #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub pals! I haven't been online too much lately, but I did finish our May selection a few weeks ago.

At first, I thought that Scarlett's take on the Cinderella story might actually be *too* sweet for me and verge on saccharine, but I should've had some faith. I ended up being all about and finished the book with such a satisfied grin.

Ruthiella Glad you liked it! I don‘t think I could read too many Susan Scarletts in a row because they are so formulaic- though as a teen I‘ll bet I could have!😂! 1d
quietjenn (Sorry about no-tags. I've been trying to get them posted for the last fifteen minutes and no luck. Will try later when maybe things are more stable?) 1d
CarolynM Glad you enjoyed. I wouldn‘t mind living in Susan Scarlett‘s world 😆 17h

LeahBergen They are a bit sweet but reading one every once in a while isn‘t too bad! 😄 14h
rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen @Ruthiella Too many in a row would be like bingeing on too much candy. 7h
rubyslippersreads @quietjenn I can‘t post tags either. I‘ve tried in the app and the browser version. I think it doesn‘t like all those @@@ 😆 7h
Ruthiella @rubyslippersreads Exactly! It would be a little too much! 😅 7h

#FurrowedMiddlebrowClub

A charming Cinderella story, though I felt a little sorry for bad-girl Cora. Also, when Bunny fainted, I laughed, it was so melodramatic- which was I think not the intended reaction. 😂

Aesthetician Ann, from an impoverished but proud and upstanding middle class family, meets cute Sir Timothy. Will class differences hold back true love? If you‘ve ever read Susan Scarlett before, you know the answer. 😍

rubyslippersreads ❤️ those old ads. My great aunt told a story about a beauty salon that caught fire. Ladies had to be extricated from those permanent wave machines. 😲 2w
Ruthiella @rubyslippersreads 😳 OMG! I can only imagine the panic! 2w
LeahBergen Yes, I also had an inkling about how it would turn out. 😉😆 2w
Ruthiella @LeahBergen Shocking! 😜😂 2w

Beautician Ann is the perfect size to fit the ill and absent bridesmaid‘s gown at an aristocratic wedding and reluctantly steps in to fill the role. She meets the dashing best man (a Lord, natch) and sparks fly. This was a lovely little pre-WWII Harlequin Romance/Mills and Boon riff on a Cinderella story and I was down for all of it. 😆

CarolynM I got a bit worried when poor Bunny was at death's door 🫣🥲 I should have known that it would all turn out well in the end😃 2w
Ruthiella Sounds like it‘s a perfect Susan Scarlett fairy tale! I hope to start it this weekend. 🤞 2w
willaful Ah, Never No More. I should reread that. 2w

repost for @Ruthiella:

Happy Spring #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub members! May's choice is the tagged by club favorite Susan Scarlett, aka Noel Streatfield. Based on previous books by her, I expect a heroine we can root for and a baddie we can love to hate!

Be sure to tag everyone when you post blurbs or a review so we can like and comment. Read at your own pace.

All are welcome. If anyone wants to be added/removed from the tag list, let me know.

Ruthiella Thank you! 🙏 1mo

My first #FurrowedMiddlebrow orders of the newly republished Susan Scarlett novels have arrived.

These covers, though! 💚💚

(Noel Streatfeild , author of the Shoes children‘s series, used the pseudonym of Susan Scarlett to publish these wartime romances).

Cathythoughts Fabulous! ♥️ 3y
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts I want Sally-Ann‘s green coat. 😆 3y
Cathythoughts Oh I want Sally-Ann‘s green coat too 👍🏻 it‘s gorgeous 3y
Cathythoughts I might have to borrow her waist line to go with it though 😂 3y
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts Not even a corset or a girdle would help me. 😆 3y
Centique Oh my goodness! I did not know about Noel Streatfeild writing these. 🤯 3y
LeahBergen @Centique She sort of “disowned” these later on as bits of fluff to read in bomb shelters and during blackouts. I dunno … that sounds good enough for me. 😆 3y
