The Fortunes of Jaded Women
The Fortunes of Jaded Women: A Novel | Carolyn Huynh

A GOOD MORNING AMERICA BOOK CLUB PICK For fans of Amy Tan, KJ DellAntonia, and Kevin Kwan, this sharp, smart, and gloriously extra (Nancy Jooyoun Kim, The Last Story of Mina Lee) debut follows a family of estranged Vietnamese womencursed to never know love or happinessas they reunite when a psychic makes a startling prediction. Everyone in Orange Countys Little Saigon knew that the Duong sisters were cursed. It started with their ancestor, Oanh, who dared to leave her marriage for true loveso a fearsome Vietnamese witch cursed Oanh and her descendants so that they would never find love or happiness, and the Duong women would give birth to daughters, never sons.? Oanhs current descendant Mai Nguyen knows this curse well. Shes divorced, and after an explosive disagreement a decade ago, shes estranged from her younger sisters, Minh Pham (the middle and the mediator) and Khuyen Lam (the youngest who swears she just runs humble coffee shops and nail salons, not Little Saigons underground). Though Mais three adult daughters, Priscilla, Thuy, and Thao, are successful in their careers (one of them is John Chos dermatologist!), the same cant be said for their love lives. Mai is convinced they might drive her to an early grave. Desperate for guidance, she consults Auntie Hua, her trusted psychic in Hawaii, who delivers an unexpected prediction: this year, her family will witness a marriage, a funeral, and the birth of a son. This prophecy will reunite estranged mothers, daughters, aunts, and cousinsfor better or for worse. A multi-narrative novel brimming with levity and candor, The Fortunes of Jaded Women is about mourning, meddling, celebrating, and healing together as a family. It shows how Vietnamese women emerge victorious, even if the world is against them.

Next row in my #readinglogsnake is The Fortunes of Jaded Women. Read this in honor of #AAPIHeritageMonth. Also, this is my first general fiction book, so I have picked the color green to represent it. This tells the story of how a curse and generational trauma follows the Duong women through centuries and impacts their lives today. Highly recommend. 4/5 ⭐️ #ARRCReads #BooksAndCrafts

My second book for the Asian readathon. The challenge for this one: read a book by an Asian author or featuring an Asian character that is focused on identity and self-discovery. This book has a cast of fourteen Vietnamese women all trying to find themselves while navigating family dynamics and messy relationships. #asianreadathon2023

Mixed feelings with this novel. I liked the “fortune” folklore/myth/story and the dynamic of this family. But sometimes characters actions/behaviors seemed to me like short stories/chunks without a well story integration, as a whole. It has some funny scenes but also some scenes were like “forced” to be funny. But it seems that this is an unpopular opinion with this novel🤷🏽‍♀️ 3⭐️

#AsianReadathon YouTuber @WithCindy prompt #5-book featuring an Asian who is either a hot mess famous or eccentric (all members in that family 🤣)

#AsianAuthor (Vietnamese)

#ISpyBingo cover seems like a suburb?🤷🏽‍♀️Maybe? 😜 @Clwojick @TheAromaOfBooks

I loved this story of a “cursed” family of Vietnamese women. It‘ll the perspective switches between the different women in the family. 5/5

This was a low pick for me. Audio probably wasn‘t the best format to read this one in. Way too many characters and names for me to keep track of and remember. Overall, I liked this family saga and family drama.

I read this in February, so my memory is already vague. #BOTM

The scope and number of characters in this book was too ambitious for its length. I liked this large family of Vietnamese women living in SoCal, but I kept having to remind myself of how the relationships fit right up to the end.

A Vietnamese family is cursed to have only daughters. When sisters relocate after the war, they and their children form a tangled mess that often argues, but perhaps a death, wedding, and baby can bring them together.

Cinfhen I just couldn‘t concentrate with this one…definitely bad timing 2y

I really enjoyed this book! I found it to be a cute story about the relationships between mothers and daughters and how even when they grow apart they can always grow back together. It was a great read!

"Everyone in Orange County's Little Saigon knew the Duong sisters were cursed."

A solid pick for me! Full of family drama, generational curses, so many sisters, and a lot of heart. Things felt quite stressful for most of it, but the many layers of endings were very satisfying; I love a punny title; and that orange fight was iconic!!

Now on to the scary reads for #scarathlon2022! Go #teamslaughter!!

I was responsible for getting my granddaughter Presley to a doubleheader in Wisconsin this weekend. As she was digging through my tote bag, she said “Grammy, why did you bring a book?” I replied “What else was I gonna do while you warmed up for an hour?” Doesn‘t she know me better than this? Then again she‘s a girl who loves math over reading. 🤨🥲

There were some serious undertones to this book, but the funny and snarky won out. One 70ish grandmother, three 50ish (well 4) daughters, and 8 adult granddaughters exceeded my ability to track who belonged to whom. So I gave up and just appreciated the nuances of each woman‘s experience as a Vietnamese-American. ↓

marleed I now find myself particularly interested in finding a non-fiction account of a child of an immigrant who opted to return to and live their adult life in their parent‘s homeland. 2y
