Savor: A Chef's Hunger for More | Fatima Ali
8 posts | 4 read | 11 to read
A young chef whose dreams were cut short savors every last minute as she explores food and adventure, illness and mortality in this stunning, lyrical memoir and family story that sweeps from Pakistan to New York City and beyond. Savor is moving, heartbreaking, and defiantly hopeful.Mohsin Hamid, New York Times bestselling author of The Last White Man and Exit West Fatima Ali won the hearts of viewers as the Fan Favorite of Bravos Top Chef in season fifteen. Twenty-nine years old, she was a dynamic, boundary-breaking chef and a bright new voice for change in the food world. After the taping wrapped and before the show aired, Fati was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer. Not one to ever slow down or admit defeat, the star chef vowed to spend her final year traveling the world, eating delicious food, and making memories with her loved ones. But when her condition abruptly worsened, her plans were sidelined. She pivoted, determined to make her final days count as she worked to tell the story of a brown girl chef who set out to make a name for herself, her food, and her culture. Including writing from Fatima during her last months and contributions by her mother, Farezeh, and her collaborator, Tarajia Morrell, this deftly woven account is an inspiring ode to the food, family, and countries Fatima loved so much. Alternating between past and present, readers are transported back to Pakistan and the childhoods of both Fatima and Farezeh, each deeply affected by cultural barriers that shaped the course of their lives. From the rustic stalls of the outdoor markets of Karachi to the kitchen and dining room of Meadowood, the acclaimed three-star Michelin restaurant where she apprenticed, Fati reflects on her life and her identity as a chef, a daughter, and a queer woman butting up against traditional views. This triumphant memoir is at once an exploration of the sense of wonder that made Fatima so special, and a shining testament to the resilience of the human spirit. At its core, it is a story about what it means to truly live, a profound and exquisite portrait of savoring every moment.

This book takes you through her short life from soup to nuts. Or from dahl to sushi. I listened to this on audio because I knew I wouldn't get through it as a physical book. As it is I spent months listening to the audio. It contains both her perspectives and her mother's on key events from her life.

She would have done such great things, taken way too soon.

Two things to know about this story: you will be in awe and inspired by the life Fatima Ali led, short though it was, and you will ugly cry yourself through the sadness as you read about the heroic battle that Fatima Ali fought as cancer consumed her 29 year old body before she died in 2019. The impression I got was that Fatima Ali lived her life with such tenacity and vigor. She lived like us all, not expecting her end to be so near.

I‘m a day late for my #WinterReadathon update, but here is my first week. I liked Savor, but thought it could have gone deeper. This was my #Doublespin book as well. I enjoyed The Stolen Book of Evelyn Aubrey. A bit of a mystery and just a nice story unfolding in the early 1900‘s and 2006/7. The other two I‘ve previously posted about.

This literally took my breath away - probably because I was snot crying like Viola Davis. To know that this brave, industrious young woman never got to set the world on fire in the way that she had hoped to brings me immense sadness. Chapters written by Fati‘s mother are interspersed throughout. This is a very tough read but it was written so beautifully. I absolutely adored it. RIP, Chef. 5🌟

rockpools My goodness, that sounds like a hard read! 1y

Well this book gutted me. Fatima Ali, a fan favorite contestant on Top Chef was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, a fatal cancer at the height of her career. While her dream was to spend her final year traveling the world, dining in the finest eateries & experiencing culinary delights, she spent months suffering at Sloan Kettering battling her illness. In her final days she met with Tarania Morrell, a journalist to share her story. #NetGalley

TrishB 😢 too real life sad. 2y

Fatima was one of my all time favorite Top Chef contestants. Her death still saddens me but I am hoping for big smiles with this new release. #bookmail
