The Vibrant Years
The Vibrant Years: A Novel | Sonali Dev
""Bursting with humor, banter, and cringeworthy first dates, Sonali Dev's The Vibrant Years is a joyful and fun read, but it's also very much a timely tale about a group of underestimated women demanding respect and embracing their most authentic selves." --Mindy Kaling Living on their own terms means being there for one another. When sixty-five-year-old Bindu Desai inherits a million dollars, she's astounded--and horrified. The windfall threatens to expose a shameful mistake from her youth. Desperate to keep the secret, Bindu quickly spends it on something unexpected: a condo in a posh retirement community in Florida. The impulsive decision blindsides Bindu's daughter-in-law, Aly. At forty-seven, Aly still shares a home with Bindu even after her divorce from Bindu's son. But maybe this change is just the push Aly needs to fight for the segment she's been promised for years at the news station where she works. As Bindu and Aly navigate their new dynamic, Aly's daughter, Cullie, is faced with losing the business that made her a tech-world star. The only way to save it is to deliver a new idea to her investors--and of course they want the half-baked dating app she pitched them in a panic. Problem is, Cullie has never been on a real date. Naturally, enlisting her single mother and grandmother to help her with the research is the answer. From USA Today bestselling author Sonali Dev comes a heartfelt novel about three generations of hilarious, unconventional, ambitious women navigating bad dates, a spiteful HOA board, reemerging exes, and secrets that refuse to remain hidden. Join the Desai women on a shared journey of self-discovery as they dare to live their most vibrant lives"--

I absolutely adored this story! Three generations of Indian women supporting each other and finding themselves through life's conflicts. They struggle with self image, misogyny in the workplace, breaking down patriarchal marriage roles, and dating in a new technological world. Each woman brings their own unique perspective to each problem. Their love and support for each other was inspiring 💗

This is Casey‘s vibrant face.

I finished THE VIBRANT YEARS over breakfast! It was great, and I‘d definitely class it as general fiction with a romantic component rather than romance. The main focus is the love and support that exists between a daughter, mother, and grandmother as they all figure out where they want to steer their lives next.

dabbe Casey. You. Crack. Me. Up. 😁 😍 😂 10mo

I took a break on my bike ride to do the book & breakfast thing with Sonali Dev‘s latest. I really hope I can find more time with it this afternoon; it‘s great so far! I do wonder at how the library‘s catalogued it as Romance, though. Dev‘s previous books definitely fit the genre, but I‘m about 1/3 into this one and it feels pretty firmly in the General Fiction camp. Not a viable love interest in sight.

Today, I‘m sharing a Pink Lemonade photo collage I made with my unread Kindle books. I saw other people on Bookstagram posting Pink Lemonade book stacks. I don‘t own a lot of pink and yellow books so I made this photo collage instead.

A vibrant sunset the night before last makes for the perfect background for "The Vibrant Years."

This is a lovely story about 3 generations of women coming into their own.

Bindu has something from her past that she has buried.

Aly is Bindu's daughter in law and is facing discrimination at work and separation from her husband.

Cullie is the youngest obsessed with work and searching for love.

Together, they are a powerful and inspiring force

I re-read this for book club & it‘s a lovely book. Marriages, life dreams, sex, and everything related to a woman‘s life rolled into one beautiful story.

This book is incredible! I could not put it down. Bhindi is loveable as we look @ her past and present. In her 60s she is letting herself become all that she is. A great romance, a great woman growing book, but most of all a book about loving women and ourselves for all that we are.

This is a story of 3 generations of women as they face various challenges - death, career plateaus, dating, anxiety, etc. They learn to find their footing in a world dominated by men and how to stand up against the expectations to fill a certain role as women, more specifically as Indian/Indian-American women. I enjoyed their journey and how they supported each other. Bindu was definitely my favorite!

“You and Cullie have that too. You know that, right?” Suddenly Binji‘s eyes were burning with something Cullie had never seen there before. Her gaze moved from Cullie to Mom. “Love for what you do. Work that feels as essential as breathing, that lets you dig into yourself, makes you feel alive. Hold on to it. Everyone doesn‘t have that.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is a feel-good multigenerational story of three Indian American women, their respective journeys to find themselves, and their love and support of each other. Bindu, the grandmother, particularly shines! I liked it, but thought it was a bit over the top and all over the place at times.

I loved this story. The way Oscar‘s journal entries entertained with present day happenings in Bindu, Aly, & Cullie‘s lives. And their love & three generation relationship is beautiful. This story made me laugh, made me cry, made me frustrated about life…and it was beautiful. Highly recommend.
