From the No.1 New York Times bestselling author of Lore and The Darkest Minds trilogy comes this stunning series opener inspired by Arthurian legend and fuelled by love, revenge and pure adrenaline - cementing Alexandra Bracken's status as one of the top fantasy authors writing today. Tamsin Lark didn't ask to be a Hollower. As a mortal with no magical talent, she was never meant to seek legendary relics from the ancient crypts of dark sorceresses. But after her thieving foster father disappeared without so much as a goodbye, it was the only way to keep herself - and her brother, Cabell - alive. Ten years later, rumours are swirling that her guardian vanished with a powerful ring from Arthurian legend, igniting Tamsin's hope of freeing Cabell from a curse that threatens them both. But they aren't the only ones who covet the ring ... As word spreads, greedy Hollowers start circling, and Tamsin is forced into an uneasy alliance with her rival Emrys just to survive. Their race for the ring leads them across modern-day England into Avalon, but the misty otherland is nothing like the legends claim. As the mystery rotting the heart of Avalon consumes them, and they come no closer to finding the ring, Tamsin begins to fear she won't just lose her brother - she'll lose her one chance to uncover the secret of who she truly is.

I enjoyed this! I love Alex Bracken, she‘s an auto read for me. I‘m definitely intrigued with all the Arthur related retellings and myth adjacent stuff out there at the moment. This was very intriuging. Looking forward to the next book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Although it was a little slow in the beginning and it took me awhile to get into it, in the end it was worth it. This was a modern take on some of the Arthurian legends. Our FMC is searching for answers about her past, a way to save the people she loves and a sense of family that she never had. The twist at the end solidified for me that I will read the next book in the series when it comes out. #serieslove2023 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2

This signed copy (thank you @catiewithac ) was excellent! I don‘t read a lot of books focused on the Arthurian legends, but this dark and complex take presented a modern story.
Tamsin will do anything to try to help her brother, even team up with a despised rich boy she‘s competing with for a job to travel to Avalon to lift his curse. They discover new friends & new enemies and face part of their past.
4/5 some plot holes, but still good.

iread2much I saw a lot of myself in Tamsin, although we are dark and depressing for different reasons. I do like the idea of a chaos goblin in my brain being responsible for being unable to stop my mouth. 8mo

What a wild read this was, with an unpredictable ending and loads of emotion! Be warned, though: if Leigh Bardugo says something has heartbreak, she‘s not lying.

This was an OwlCrate book, and I like the different cover. While I did like the story, it was a little slow in the beginning, and this fantasy book threw you in and didn‘t explain terms like “Hollower” right away. Maybe I‘m slower than others, but sometimes I need those things explained sooner. The last half was faster and much more interesting, but Bracken‘s sequels aren‘t as well-received as her OGs, so I‘m curious about what comes next.

Bracken‘s latest, published earlier this month, jumps on the Arthurian legends retelling bandwagon with a story about thieving, curses, curse breaking, sorcerers, Cunningfolk, druids, magical objects & magical creatures. It has all the recognizable tropes, you‘ve likely read this story & met these types of characters before, but it is all well executed & I was definitely intrigued by the world building—I‘ll read the sequel. Entertaining YA read.

Totally forgot to post this one the other week 🙄. I liked this story so much better over her previous offering Lore. This one is first in a series and there was a great deal of world building and character development. And I will definitely be looking out for the next book in the series.

Sometimes you get lucky when you check the shelves where the bookstore puts out the ARCs it has received, free for anyone to take, and you find a signed one that happens to be on your list of books you‘d like to read. It‘s a YA fantasy inspired by Arthurian legend today.

In this YA fantasy series starter, our heroine Tamsin was left as a child by her unknown parents with Nash, her guardian and adopted brother Cabell. As they search for magical treasure to pay the bills, they are also searching for a talisman to break Cabell‘s curse. Nash disappears at a search site, and seven years later brother/sister travel to the fabled Avalon following clues to his/the talisman‘s possible whereabouts. They find horrific 🔻

robinb dangers, powerful priestesses, more curses and a dying isle. They must wade through secrets, lies and legend to try and discover the answers they (and Avalon) need. I enjoyed this. I really did. Tamsin showed growth along the way (she started out a bit annoying to me), as she began to trust and overcome abandonment issues. But I also had a couple of things that weren‘t great for me. First, at 500 pages it needed more editing…it was just too 🔻 13mo
robinb much. And secondly, I had trouble keeping straight all the magical terms/talismans thrown at me…too much, too fast, and I actually felt it often interrupted the flow of the story for me. On the plus side, there‘s a great cliffhanger with lots more that can be explored in future books. 4.25/5⭐️ (edited) 13mo

Ooh exciting. #currentlyreading #preview #printarc #aprilrso2023 so far it‘s a strong sibling story, a magical story, a desperate race to break a curse, and enemies needing to work together. Let‘s see how it progresses. Plus a #bromeliad that has taken years to grow that flower 🌸

Soubhiville What a strange and beautiful flower! 14mo
Booksblanketsandahotbeverage I‘m curious about this one. I hope it‘s good! 14mo
Missusb Well.. it‘s just a bit long honestly. I wanted it move faster. I found I wasn‘t connecting to the characters enough. But it might be me. @BookHoarder32 (edited) 14mo
