Song of Silver, Flame Like Night
Song of Silver, Flame Like Night | Amélie Wen Zhao
16 posts | 12 read | 8 to read
In a fallen kingdom, one girl carries the key to discovering the secrets of her nation's past—and unleashing the demons that sleep at its heart. An epic fantasy series inspired by the mythology and folklore of ancient China. "Perfect for fans of The Untamed. I loved it!” —Shelley Parker-Chan, bestselling author of She Who Became the Sun Once, Lan had a different name. Now she goes by the one the Elantian colonizers gave her when they invaded her kingdom, killed her mother, and outlawed her people’s magic. She spends her nights as a songgirl in Haak’gong, a city transformed by the conquerors, and her days scavenging for what she can find of the past. Anything to understand the strange mark burned into her arm by her mother in her last act before she died. The mark is mysterious—an untranslatable Hin character—and no one but Lan can see it. Until the night a boy appears at her teahouse and saves her life. Zen is a practitioner—one of the fabled magicians of the Last Kingdom. Their magic was rumored to have been drawn from the demons they communed with. Magic believed to be long lost. Now it must be hidden from the Elantians at all costs. When Zen comes across Lan, he recognizes what she is: a practitioner with a powerful ability hidden in the mark on her arm. He’s never seen anything like it—but he knows that if there are answers, they lie deep in the pine forests and misty mountains of the Last Kingdom, with an order of practitioning masters planning to overthrow the Elantian regime. Both Lan and Zen have secrets buried deep within—secrets they must hide from others, and secrets that they themselves have yet to discover. Fate has connected them, but their destiny remains unwritten. Both hold the power to liberate their land. And both hold the power to destroy the world. Now the battle for the Last Kingdom begins.

Maybe it‘s due to being an audiobook, but it kinda fell flat to me. I had a difficult time keeping up with all these names being said and how they connected. Love the mythos of the Chinese yin and yang prospects, of the schools. The magical realm sounded like it could be expanded upon, with things were left. These two main just weren‘t engaged to me, I didn‘t get how they ended by the end.

Still plowing through subscription box books LOL Another YA multicultural epic fantasy, it was a cover buy! Chinese culture & folklore.

Lan & Zen have secrets … secrets that will help them and potentially end the world.

This was a Last Kingdom type of book.

This book fell short for me. The world is interesting, but I feel like the author missed some opportunities and blew through some plot and under developed others. It wasn't bad, but I was looking for more.

Look at me, finally reviewing a book I posted about getting 2 months ago! 😂 Overall, this was pretty entertaining and I would definitely recommend it to folks who loved “Iron Widow†and “A Magic Steeped in Poison.†That said, the pacing and worldbuilding were both a bit middling, and more consistent rules for the magic system would have been great.

Omggg the spam I just unleashed 🫣🫣🫣 sorry, but I've just been so bad about updating this place 😭😭 but here's the book I'm reading now! It's... Alright. I'm thinking it might be a 3/5 read. Not a lot is happening tbh, esp nothing wowing me. That cover tho!

Well, this was something. Truly epic fantasy.

I had apprehensions going into an Amélie Wen Zhao book after not enjoying Blood Heir, and DNF-ing Red Tigress, but this was an entirely different work, literally and figuratively.

The book is a true homage to the author's Chinese heritage, and the story written around it is just as compelling. Much has been said about the gorgeous book cover, but once you get into the book, it's high stakes all

asterese around. There is no rest for our characters. War does not end after an invasion has planted roots in a subdued land. It only keeps brewing beneath until it boils over.

I can't wait for the next book.

Being on the Illumicrate waitlist for absolute ages was well worth it for this beauty alone! Here‘s to hoping the story is as good as the appearance.

This is the prettiest book I‘ve never heard of. Illumicrate February 2023 subscription.

The cover is artwork that wraps around the book. The top edges are blue & the bottom is purple and the side is that pretty animal stencil. End papers are more art. Author letter and signed by the author.

I‘m interested to read this now!

Books.With.Becki That is a beautiful cover 13mo

This was such a fascinating read. i loved the world building and the history told in the story. This is a brilliant start to the series and i look forward to the next book in the series. There's a lot to follow but it makes sense as the story develops. Each chapter has a quote at the start which were really interesting. Lan is a fascinating character and her strength shines throughout. I really liked her. #Netgalley 4*

I really enjoyed this one. I love the chemistry between the two main characters. The writing was really very lyrical but at the same time easy to read. I look forward to the discussion later in the month.

This was a fun read! The chemistry was great even if one of the characters seemed a bit tstl at the start (she grows on you)! I feel like the second book will be better, but I‘m worried I‘ll forget the magic system by then!
