How to Repair a Mechanical Heart
How to Repair a Mechanical Heart | J. C. Lillis
11 posts | 9 read | 19 to read
The summer after high school graduation, two cute and snarky boys hit the road in an RV. Their mission: follow the traveling fan convention for Castaway Planet, the cult sci-fi show they're both obsessed with. BRANDON irons his t-shirts, loves the dapper and reserved Castaway android Sim, and hides his pesky Catholic guilt from his out-and-proud roadtrip partner, Abel. ABEL collects funny belt buckles, loves Castaway's brave and dashing Captain Cadmus, has a hot boyfriend with a phoenix tattoo, and has nothing to hide-except his epic crush on Brandon. During their six-week cross-country adventure, Brandon and Abel post new entries on their Castaway Planet fan vlog, spar with an online community of slash fiction writers, meet their TV idols, play with their action figures, uncover big secrets, and maybe possibly fall in love. Can two fanboys face down their obstacles and write themselves a real-life romance-or is fiction the only thing bringing them together?

This was the selection for book club this month. Sadly, I can‘t make it to the meeting due to Parent-Teacher conferences. I am not even sure why I finished it, as I debated stopping several times. It wasn‘t bad, but I don‘t think I am really the target audience here and a lot of the story fell flat for me. I think it was the teen angst. At least I can use it for #bbrc so there is that. #teenangst #saga #lgbt #bookclub

This book is a love letter to fandom and how it can change your life! It‘s so sweet and fun and I was having vivid memories of fandom circa 2012. It really rigged at my heartstrings, because fandom has had a huge impact on my life.

For my girl @BookishFeminist - I took a pic of this when I was reading it but forgot about it until tonight! A weird descriptor to add to your collection "snores pornographically, like a prince sleeping off an orgy." ?? #LitsyAfterDark #likewtfdoesthisevenmean #clearyimnotwatchingtherightporn #iwouldforsurewatchpornofaprincesleepingoffanorgy #soundskindofpeaceful #butlikehowloudisthesnoringtho #maybenotsopeaceful

BookishFeminist 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 8y
BookishFeminist I am over here cackling so loudly. HOW DO YOU DO THIS? Does it require penetration? 😂😂😂😭 8y
Megabooks Who sleeps during porn? Wtf does that even mean. Does this person snore out lite 70s Muzak? @bookishfeminist 8y
See All 38 Comments
Yamich49 @BookishFeminist @Ebooksandcooks Ahaha right?!?!? No idea at all. But you know it kind of does sound like a weird thing that a teenage boy would say about a crush "Look at him over there, snoring all sexy like a porno (which I've totally watched a lot of)" ? 8y
BookishFeminist @Ebooksandcooks Hahahaha or maybe some Marvin Gaye or George Michael 😂😂 Does his mouth move while he's snoring like this? That could have some pornographic options 8y
Megabooks I'm sorry I forgot the proper #LitsyAfterDark emojis ????? We'll just pretend the lady is doing a private lap dance to "You Can Leave Your Hat On" while her man snores pornographically! @Yamich49 @BookishFeminist 8y
Megabooks @BookishFeminist @Yamich49 I had not thought about mouth movement, Sarah. That could definitely throw it into the porn realm! 8y
BookishFeminist @Ebooksandcooks @yamich49 😂😂 I don't know if I'll ever be able to look at those emojis again the same way. This mouth movement could totally be a thing. I'm not sure how the dynamics of this would work, and I'm not willing to test drive this one like I was for the womanly laughter 😂 8y
BookishFeminist @Ebooksandcooks Also can we deconstruct "like a prince sleeping off an orgy" because ...what? That's a thing that happens enough to be worthy of metaphor?! ?? 8y
Megabooks @BookishFeminist it does in Saudi Arabia 💤🇸🇦 8y
BookishFeminist @Ebooksandcooks 😱 yes I've heard of their hooker parties. Well that just got real! 8y
Megabooks @BookishFeminist Yup! Hookers...foreigners...I wouldn't go to one of their parties! 8y
BookishFeminist @Ebooksandcooks YEP NO THANKS. No thank you to that misogyny party. 🙅🏻🙅🏻 (side note: careful with the word foreigner- it's a slur to some folks, though I know you don't intend it that way) 8y
Megabooks Oh I'm sorry! Legit ignorance! I meant people from other countries living and working in Saudi Arabia. 8y
Sue 😂😂😂😂😂 8y
BookishFeminist @Ebooksandcooks Oh no need to apologize! That makes a lot more sense- it's late 😭 also my grandpa used to say it a lot bc he was xenophobic so that's often how I hear it. I imagined the Saudi prince throw down that happened in California a while back, lol. No idea whether it would be offensive in your context but I try to be cautious & hope I didn't come across as condescending! 8y
Vinjii 😳😳 excuse me, what? 8y
BookishFeminist @Vinjii Just don't try this one at home like you did with the laughing 😂 8y
Megabooks @BookishFeminist I guess I don't think about it like that. No offense taken. Plus "foreigners" or "foreign nationals" is how I've read them referred to in articles. The latter probably being the more correct term. 8y
BookishFeminist @Ebooksandcooks Yea it def makes a lot more sense if referring to foreign nationals living in Saudi Arabia, so it's prob not incorrect usage but I'm not the one to judge since I'm obvs not one. I read the comment as wouldn't want to party with foreigners & I was like 😳😱 which I know isn't something you'd say at all, so I figured it had to be the way I'd read it. Always good to check in though since maybe I wouldn't be the only to misconstrue. 8y
BookishFeminist @Ebooksandcooks anyway you're awesome and thanks for being open-minded! Love the inclusiveness of Litsy. 😊 8y
Vinjii @BookishFeminist I wouldn't know where to start! 8y
Laalaleighh 😂😂😂😂😂😂 8y
Laalaleighh I'm going to say this to my boyfriend when he wakes up tomorrow and wait for his response (he snores, it drives me crazy) @Yamich49 8y
BookishMarginalia 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳 8y
ramyasbookshelf @BookishFeminist @Ebooksandcooks @Yamich49 don't you guys ever sleep?? I want to partake in your #litsyafternight discussions but I'm too busy snoring pornographically like a prince sleeping off an orgy 😜😜😂 8y
Megabooks @ramyasbookshelf No. I go whole nights without sleep. And you made me lol!!! 😂😂😂 8y
Soubhiville That's bizarre. 8y
BookishFeminist @ramyasbookshelf @ebooksandcooks Hahaha no we do not sleep. Not when there are book jokes to make! Tell me did you figure out the mystery of snoring pornographically? We're all curious! 8y
becausetrains @BookishFeminist @ramyasbookshelf @Ebooksandcooks "We're all curious!" A lot of pornographic snores start like that ?? 8y
OSChamberlain @BookishFeminist @ramyasbookshelf @Ebooksandcooks wow. Just caught up on this one. This legit left me speechless. Somehow, as if snoring pornographically wasn't a crazy enough analogy, you throw sleeping after an orgasm in there. I mean... How many pornos end in going to sleep so that you'd know what they snore like anyway? What a lump of bologna! 8y
Carol Ah, the great phonographic snooze paradox!! 8y
Yamich49 @BookishFeminist @Ebooksandcooks @Vinjii @Laalaleighh @becausetrains @OSChamberlain @ramyasbookshelf Glad to see that this hilarious #LitsyAfterDark conversation continued long after I went to bed (which was too late and I'm regretting it at work today for sure). I've thought about it and think that he was trying to convey that the guy was snoring dramatically? Maybe.... As for princes and orgies, I don't know any princes so I can't comment 😉 8y
Zelma I missed this one yesterday. 😂 Mr. Z and both snore. He obviously manfully snores. Science has established this as fact. I wonder if mine is pornographic or more of a giggle-moan snore. I am a lady, after all. 8y
Yamich49 @Zelma Haha you'll have to ask him if yours is pornographic! 😆 8y
Zelma @Yamich49 he said that was not the first word he use to describe my snoring. 😆 8y
Yamich49 @Zelma 😂 Probably because NO ONE describes snoring in that way except for the goof in this book! 😉 8y

Three friends take a road trip to visit fan conventions for their favorite show. 🤓 There were a lot of fun parts -the fanfic & shipping wars, the msg boards on the fanfic sites (VERY realistic) & the cute romance. The MC's struggle with coming out & challenging his family's religious beliefs was brave & well-written. However, I disliked that aspect of the story (prob bc I'm not religious & never had to deal with that). Overall a good book.

😆😆 I'm definitely getting a Kirk/Spock vibe in this book's fandom slashfic couple. 🖖

(I even read it in my head in Spock's voice 😂)

BookishFeminist "rumors of my asexuality have been greatly exaggerated" LMFAO. Jeez what a prize pick up line. ?? 8y
Yamich49 @BookishFeminist Ahhaa right? There were some super cheesy lines in this book - love it! 8y

Book, booze and bed to end a hellish week and celebrate giving my notice at a job that was making me very unhappy! 🙌🏽 Here's hoping the new job I start in two weeks is less stressful with fewer hateful employees! 😁

Louise Best of luck with your new gig! 🍀 8y
BookishFeminist 🙌🏼🙌🏼 Good for you! You deserve it TBH. What's your new gig? 8y
Yamich49 @Louise Thanks! I'm looking forward to trying something new! 8y

Yamich49 @BookishFeminist Thanks! It's the director of our tribe's Johnson O'Malley program - the language, culture and education program. It should be a lot of fun, I've always enjoyed working with our local youth. I was a counselor in high school for the summer camp the program puts on every summer so it feels like I'm coming full circle! I just need a change - the atmosphere at my current job is not great and it was stressing me out too much 😒 8y
Gezemice Good luck with your new job! 8y
Yamich49 @Gezemice Thanks! I get nervous when I have to start a new job but I think it will be a very positive change for me! 8y
LauraBeth Good for you for moving on 🎉 8y
Gezemice @Yamich49 I have left a job that was bringing me down, and it was the best decision I made. Your mental health is important! 8y
ReadosaurusText Congrats on the change! 8y
LiteraryinPA Good for you!! 8y
Megabooks Woo hoo!! So happy for you!! 👍🏻👏🏻 8y
megt Congrats on the new job! 8y
Yamich49 @Gezemice Yes it is! I feeling a little guilty or like I was giving up when I was first considering this other job but this week was so ridic it helped me get past it. Happy for you that it worked out so well! Hoping I will say the same thing in a few weeks 😀 8y
BookishFeminist @Yamich49 That sounds like so much fun and right up your alley! And yes I completely understand. Your mental health is important and from what you've told me about your current job, this sounds like a smart decision. People that work with children tend to be much better to deal with than sexist judges & courts. DV/SA is also sad & wears on you after a while even if it's rewarding sometimes. 8y
moranadatter Best of luck at the new job! 8y
SusanInTiburon Change, even a good change like this one, is always hard so be extra kind to yourself and get in plenty of reading! ❤️👍🏽❤️ 8y
Yamich49 @kmdartist @SusanInTiburon Thank you! Littens are such a supportive group! 8y
Yamich49 @Yamich49 Yes it should be a lot of fun! It'll be weird to switch gears after approx 10 years in the DV/SA field but I think I was really starting to get burnt out. I'm just glad I was able to recognize that and get past the responsibility I felt to keep going even when I was coming home unhappy more than once or twice a week. Thanks for your support 👍🏽 8y
Yamich49 @BookishFeminist Ahaha I tagged myself on accident when I meant to tag you! Makes perfect sense, right? Anyway post above was my response to you lolllll 8y
BookishFeminist @Yamich49 Hahaha same difference at this point anyway before we find any more obscure common interests. And yes of course! That makes total sense. I had similar feelings when I decided to stop pursuing being a practicing attorney- it's a hard choice but ultimately it's best to go with your gut and find something you're excited about even if it's different. ✊🏼 8y

Starting my book eight for #bookisholympics - I know I need to stop. 😆 The premise of this sounds interesting so hopefully it's good.

MrBook You need to stop?! Aw, heck no! Show us how it's done, you #biblioPhelps you! *cheers you on* 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 8y
bookishkai I have this on my TBR, interested to see your thoughts, since it sometimes feels like we're reading twins. 8y
Yamich49 @MrBook 😂😂 Thanks for the support! I'd rather be #biblioBilles or #biblioManuel or #biblioLydecky but I'll take what I can get 😉 8y
MrBook 😂😂😂👍🏻👏🏻 8y
Yamich49 @bookishkris Right?!? I've thought that before as well. 👊🏽 I will let you know! It is the second one I've read recently that's about queer guys but is not written by a queer guy which makes me a little 👀 but I'm hoping it will still be a good one. 8y

My 6th #BookishOlympics book wasn't actually this one (which I have read) but another Lillis book, not yet on Litsy. I didn't particularly like either (too fantastical and silly), but How to... is the better of her two books.
