The Story of a New Name
The Story of a New Name: Neapolitan Novels, Book Two | Elena Ferrante
The second book, following last years My Brilliant Friend, featuring the two friends Lila and Elena. The two protagonists are now in their twenties. Marriage appears to have imprisoned Lila. Meanwhile, Elena continues her journey of self-discovery. The two young women share a complex and evolving bond that brings them close at times, and drives them apart at others. Each vacillates between hurtful disregard and profound love for the other. With this complicated and meticulously portrayed friendship at the center of their emotional lives, the two girls mature into women, paying the cruel price that this passage exacts.

The second volume is more compelling than the first. The events described are more consequential and more soap opera-ish. However, my complaints remain the same -- there is too much telling, no showing (not a single description to be had) and the characters are still not three dimensional.

BarbaraBB The third instalment is the best I think. I‘d give it a try! 5mo
Graywacke (Don‘t tell @BarbaraBB ☺️but this was my favorite of the quartet. I loved the complicated relationships and the beach and how the tone changed with just a few touches) Hoping you connect with book 3, it is quite a bit different. 5mo

This started out slow for me but about 30 pages in I was as hopelessly hooked as I was on its predecessor. It is the type of novel that keeps you locked in its orbit - I spent the week jonesing for my next opportunity to re-enter its world. I don't think that these novels have been life-changing so far but they have definitely been fantastic reads. I'm taking a break from Naples for a book or two but I look forward to finishing the series later.

Second instalment in the Neapolitan novels. This one has a huge cast of characters, there‘s plenty of twists and turns, buckets of betrayals. It‘s like an Italian soap opera in book form and is a total pleasure to listen to, especially with all those Italians names that I‘d struggle to read/pronounce. I‘ve heard they‘re making a TV show, I‘ll be signing up for that!!

irre The first season of the tv show (the first book) was great! 8mo
Joanne1 @irre excellent. I wonder if I can get it in Australia. I‘m going to see if I can find it now. 8mo

Joanne1 @LeeRHarry that‘s annoying, I don‘t have Foxtel. I wonder if it‘s on DVD. 8mo
LeeRHarry @Joanne1 I think it probably would be by now - it is an HBO/RAI production. (edited) 8mo

Every bit as good as My Brilliant Friend. I don‘t normally read series, but this is just incredible. The world is so real.

My bf and I agree on absolutely no books, but this series is the only thing we both love. I love the character, the relationships and writing and emotions and he loves the society and politics. He said Lenu is a lot like me and it made me very happy, I feel a really strong connection with her.

Listened to this one on audio and thoroughly enjoyed it. Elena Ferrante can certainly tell a story in a captivating way. At times, the argumentative nature of the characters can be grating. I kept telling them to just separate themselves, but they wouldn't listen 😂
I had to keep reminding myself that they were teenagers and remember how self-righteous I was back in those days.
And the cliff hanger at the end will keep me reading...

Book Two of the Neapolitan Novels had me screaming and sobbing. Two girls trying to navigate adolescence, friendship, love, jealousy, expectations, education...with literally zero adult guidance. I am going to wait a few days before starting Book Three so that my family don't think that I've totally abandoned them. Can't wait to see how HBO does with Book One.

Until I read Elena Ferrante I had never seen a female friendship given such intense scrutiny. The relationship between Lila and Elena is complex and fraught. Beyond them we get to see the changing faces and roles of the people of the neighbourhood; class, gender, economics and ethics all coming in to play. I listened to this on Audible, Hilary Huber‘s voice entrances me - & because the story moves slowly I don‘t get lost when my mind wanders

Centique 🌟🌟🌟🌟I think it may be even better if I read it in print - I do struggle to find time to do audio books and I end up having huge gaps between reading sessions. But I have a few more I‘ve bought that I need to finish! (edited) 1y
Reviewsbylola I really like this cover. And I‘m the same way with audiobooks. I usually do non fic or essays. 1y
Centique @Reviewsbylola yes, I think I might go with non fiction in the future! 1y

Billypar Audiobooks are what got me into non-fiction- I used to read almost exclusively fiction, but for me the format was a perfect choice for non-fiction- keeps me more engaged. But I usually stick to print for fiction since there's more imaginative work and I tend to reread a lot as I go 1y
Centique @Billypar I‘m doing SPQR on audio and it is fascinating but I have to rewind a lot and relisten to get it to stay in my brain. 😂😂 1y
Billypar If audiobooks didn't have the 10 second rewind feature, I would never ever read them....not a chance 😄 1y

batsy Lovely review, P! I don't know why I haven't read Ferrante yet, her books definitely sound right up my street. 1y
Centique @Reggie thank you! I think you could stop after one book if you wanted. That first one is a pretty fascinating depiction of girlhood through to womanhood. 👍 1y
Centique @batsy I would be interested to hear what you think of them too 😊 It‘s almost like really good soap opera - stays very intimately (densely even?) inside one set of relationships. I think the thing I love is the depiction of an Italian working class neighbourhood of that era. 1y
fleeting I love, love, love Elena Ferrante! I've read all of her books and there's not one I didn't like! 😊 1y

#ReadingResolutions Day 14: Definitely a case of #BookSequel being slightly better than the first book, at least in my opinion. I know so many who stopped reading the series on the basis of Book One. Neapolitan #2. Lila and Elena's toxic friendship continues, though their personal journeys take them down wildly different paths. Lila is trapped in an abusive marriage, but determined to find moments of freedom. Elena gets as far from the people and places of her childhood as she can. The grinding poverty and toxic masculinity that pervade the narrative make this a difficult and depressing, but strangely compelling reading experience.
