Finished this over the weekend (before the accident) but haven‘t had a chance to post until now. I enjoyed this more than I thought I would! And it wasn‘t what I was expecting, but it was a wild and tense ride.

I was intrigued by the premise and curious about the outcome throughout, but parts really stretched credibility

What. A. RIDE! I never realized how fascinating it would be to consider an urban legend tailor made for the publishing industry. I hope Gentill was as tickled writing it as I was reading it.
I have no issue with anyone stating this is over the top. But that's what saved it for me. The tone was leaning mystery-thriller, which in my book means stressful and melodramatic, but this got ridiculous and therefore fun! 1/?

Robotswithpersonality As always, I wish that sexual violence did not become a plot point, but considering where the story went, there's a logic to including what has become a topical issue.
People succumbing to conspiracy theories online or being subsumed into the doomsday prepper lifestyle are also grim topics, but I now fully appreciate exactly how off the chain you can make a story that has both! 2/?

Robotswithpersonality 3/3 Last but not least: Horse! 🥰 While I loved the sibling relationship being so skilfully conveyed (with bonus private eye friend😊) what really gave me the warm fuzzies was the gentle giant of a dog featured throughout.

The apocalypse library should definitely have a fiction section. Light on the dystopian genre, please.

Pour some out for Gentill‘s agents, as it must‘ve been a real struggle not to take the plot of The Mystery Writer personally. It‘s a lot more violent, and a lot more scary, than The Woman In The Library. It‘s also less obviously meta, following the traditional mystery-thriller format more closely, but it‘s every bit as readable. Amazing cover and good set-up, but then the story stalled out and the ending was too far-fetched. The main character is not very curious/nosy/skeptical which means there isn't much to propel the mystery narrative.

This was quite a thrill read. The plot starts off slowly but then it really ramps up in the second part. The story is mostly told from Theo's persepective but we also see moments from Gus and Mac, adding more depth. The ending is really well done and i loved how it all came together. The truth of everything is so clever and twisted. I found myself hooked from almost the start and was desperate to see how it would end. #Netgalley 4*

This was a first for me by this author. I was intrigued by it and felt she did a pretty good job of making a thriller/mystery. While it did have just a bit about conspiracy theories in the beginning of some chapters it did by no means take away from the story.

I enjoyed this book. It wasn't a favorite but still it was good.

Theodosia Benton abandons her career as an attorney and shows up on her brother‘s doorstep. She now wants to be a novelist. Her mentor is brutally murdered. The police begin looking at her brother, Gus, as their prime suspect. Gus finds a thread of the murder and follows it. Theo Benton is now missing and everyone looking for her will have to die.

EadieB This is a rollercoaster ride of a book. It‘s a literary thriller that Theo Benton will have to endure. The ending of the book was a complete shock as the truth finally came out. Read this book and discover who people are trying to protect. If you like stories that turn things upside down then you will love this book. (edited) 8mo

MYSTERY - THRILLER

Theo left her university studies in Australia because she didn‘t want to be an attorney like her brother. She wanted to be an author.

She made friends with an author, but then he was murdered, and her brother was a suspect.

A slow start, but the tension and intrigue pick up. 4/5

This is a fabulous book about so many things! Theo, a budding novelist meets Dan, a bestselling author. They connect and then wham! Things get dicey and the action never stops! Conspiracy theories, Doomsday Preppers, mysterious murders….I loved it!
