The Grey Wolf
The Grey Wolf: Chief Inspector Gamache faces his most deadly case yet in this unforgettable and timely thriller | Louise Penny
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Qubec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sret, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning. That's only the first in a sequence of strange events that begin THE GREY WOLF. A missing coat, an intruder alarm, a note for Gamache reading "this might interest you", a puzzling scrap of paper with a mysterious list - and then a murder. All propel Chief Inspector Gamache and his team toward a terrible realization. Something much more sinister than any one murder or any one case is fast approaching. Armand Gamache, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, his son-in-law and second in command, and Inspector Isabelle Lacoste can only trust each other, as old friends begin to act like enemies, and long-time enemies appear to be friends. Determined to track down the threat before it becomes a reality, their pursuit takes them across Qubec and across borders. If they fail the devastating consequences would reach into the largest of cities and the smallest of villages. PRAISE FOR LOUISE PENNY AND THE CHIEF INSPECTOR GAMACHE SERIES: 'Electrifying drama ... Gamache is a fascinatingly complex protagonist' BOOK OF THE MONTH, THE TIMES 'Penny delves into the nature of evil, sensitively exploring the impact of the dreadful events she describes while bringing a warmth and humanity to her disparate cast of characters that, unusually for a crime novel, leaves you feeling better about the world once you've finished' BOOK OF THE MONTH, OBSERVER 'Nobody does evil quite as scarily as Louise Penny' ANN CLEEVES 'Enthralling ... With beautifully drawn characters, this is crime writing of the highest order' DAILY MAIL 'Louise Penny is one of the greatest crime writers of our times' DENISE MINA 'No one does atmospheric quite like Louise Penny' ELLY GRIFFITHS

A solid mystery and characters we already love. Not her best, and a cliffhanger ending which was a bit frustrating. But still a solid Gamache story.

I‘ll never grow tired of Three Pines. Not my favorite in the series, but still good. This one focused on domestic terrorism and monks. I always wish for more time in the village for the books that include a lot of travel. I love the way Gamache‘s mind works. I loved learning more about the history of his relationship with his son.

Kimzey I received my pre-ordered copy. Looking forward to reading it! 1w

I always love re-visiting this series. This one was focused on domestic terrorism and how Gamache and his team can stop them. I feel like I‘m visiting with friends when I read these books. Can‘t wait for the next one.

I finished in two nights. Now I have to wait until 2025 for the next one! Spending time in Three Pines is calming, which I needed. More under spoiler tag to protect the innocent. 😀

Lcsmcat It was clear Penny was worrying about our election. Good to see Gamache bring down corrupt politicians, but I hope she didn‘t give Vance any ideas. 2w

I was just going to my local indie bookstore to order some Christmas gifts and gossip with the bookseller about some drama with another store in the shopping center… Then I saw the new Louise Penny book sitting on top of a box. I mentioned I was already stalking Libby to see where I was on the hold list, but she made another suggestion. It was “damaged” (a tiny tear in the dust cover), so she sold it to me at a discount. Look at these end papers!

kspenmoll @Bookwormjillk Mine is mailed out after this event so it may take a week. Cannot wait! 3w
MyNamesParadise @kspenmoll a friend that I met earlier this year actually told me I needed to read Louise Penny and she finally got me into audiobooks on the Libby app so I‘ve been listening to them since like June (with some other books mixed in) and I know I still have half the series to go! I‘m excited!! 3w
kspenmoll @MyNamesParadise The current narrator of the audio books, Jean Brassand also spoke of how he felt the need to honor the past 2 narrators- he was lovely. I really needed this joyful boost tonight- ! 3w
MyNamesParadise @kspenmoll oh cool!! I‘m still on the ones that Ralph Cosham narrated but I think I heard that he only did through book 10. I could be wrong though! I didn‘t realize there were a total of 3 narrators! 3w
Librarybelle So cool!! 3w
Susanita I‘m stalking my Libby account waiting for the hold to come through. 3w

Having caught up on the remaining books in the series it was time to read the digital ARC (thank you Edelweiss+) of this one. The plot in this book takes us back to the monastery from “The Beautiful Mystery“, to Grenoble France where they make Chartreuse liqueur and to northern Quebec. While I would have loved to spend even more time in Three Pines, I thoroughly enjoyed the action in this one and liked that included more of Amelia Choquet. 4.5/5!

Mshookquilts So jealous! 7mo
Mpcacher @Mshookquilts I was very surprised to be offered it and was not going to pass it up. The only downside is now I have to wait so vey long for the next one. 7mo
