Following Atticus
Following Atticus: Forty-Eight High Peaks, One Little Dog, and an Extraordinary Friendship | Tom Ryan
After a close friend died of cancer, middle-aged, overweight, acrophobic newspaperman Tom Ryan decided to pay tribute to her in a most unorthodox manner. Ryan and his friend, miniature schnauzer Atticus M. Finch, would attempt to climb all forty-eight of New Hampshires four-thousand-foot peaks twice in one winter while raising money for charity. It was an adventure of a lifetime, leading them across hundreds of miles and deep into an enchanting but dangerous winter wonderland. At the heart of the amazing journey was the extraordinary relationship they shared, one that blurred the line between man and dog. Following Atticus is an unforgettable true saga of adventure, friendship, and the unlikeliest of family, as one remarkable animal opens the eyes and heart of a tough-as-nails newspaperman to the worlds beauty and its possibilities.

His Elderliness ran out of reading material while I was on holiday. “I had to reread old motorbike magazines” he bemoaned. He got through these three - Manson “very interesting - it‘s unbelievable how he could mind control people” Gold Rush - “good book, they‘re trying to give back the animal habitat in Vietnam” Following Atticus ⬇️

Centique - “you wouldn‘t think there‘d be much to say about mountaineering with a dog but it‘s great. Look at his little boots. He had a little jacket too. Anyone who likes dogs would love this” 4y
britt_brooke I love Jeff Guinn! He‘s one of my favorite nonfiction authors. (edited) 4y
Reggie One of the only books I have ever DNF‘ed was about Manson. I started having these intense nightmares and that was it. 4y

Reggie Also I‘m glad you‘re back so we can hear about His Elderliness! 4y
Centique @britt_brooke yes! I‘ve added all of his books to Dad‘s TBR. 4y
britt_brooke @Centique 💚 The Jonestown one is amazing. Hope your dad enjoys! (I mean, as much as one can enjoy a book about such atrocities). 4y
Centique @Reggie I can imagine. Such evil and such power...😱 😱 As a teen I was invited to this church where the pastor had a strong impact on ppl. They wanted me to speak with him and when I did I felt awed and this hunger for his attention and approval. I‘m not normally easily swayed like that. I never went back because it scared the crap out of me. My brain at least knew to 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️ ! 4y
Cinfhen I‘m glad you got away but SO happy to see a book report from #HisElderliness 4y
vivastory The Guinn about Bonnie and Clyde is one of the best nf I've ever read. Picked it up based on @britt_brooke review Highly recommend! 4y
batsy Oh no, not old motorbike magazines! I feel his pain. I love that he enjoyed the details of the dog's apparel. The cover is so adorable 💜 4y
Centique @vivastory thanks Scott! On the list it goes ☺️ 4y

#7days7books Day 4

I laughed, I cried, and I was motivated to try hiking the 48 4000 footers myself (but not with my pup). 🏞️🥾🐾

This book was about a middle aged over weight man and his adventure with a very small dog as they discover the white mountains in New Hampshire. It‘s a fun read, especially if you know the white mountains!

This is our camping audiobook this week. As a dog lover, this is an inspiring story. And with all stories about animals, it will likely wreck us. #nonfiction2019

I listened to the audio (read by the author). He does have an accent, which took my mind off what I was listening to occasionally to spell the word in my head (i.e. park = pawk), though mostly it wasn‘t a big deal. Anyway, I liked Atticus and they sure had a wonderful connection. The story just didn‘t “wow” me, but it was enjoyable.

All dogs are special but Atticus was truly extraordinary. I especially love this quote about not being able to give what you don't have and how true that really is. And I'm finished with a book club selection weeks before we meet - that doesn't happen often!

Well my heart is sufficiently warm after reading this sweet book. ❤️ Little Atticus is a miniature schnauzer who is a badass mountain climber and man about town. He completely changes his owner's life by being his loyal partner on the mountains and in life. 🏔 It's not overly sweet as some dog books tend to be, and focuses on the primal and authentic connection that can exist between a person and their dog.

Best friendship book..Tom Ryan and his canine companion Atticus. Sadly, Atticus is no loner living but he will live forever in this beautiful story. @TheSpinecrackersBookClub #augustphotochallenge
