I did some holiday shopping today. Picked up these for myself. This Macmillan Collector‘s Library edition is my 4th copy of Leaves of Grass. That makes Leaves of Grass the book of which I own the most copies.
Starting From Paumanok
See, steamers steaming through my poems,
See, in my poems immigrants continually coming and landing,
See, in arriere, the wigwam, the trail, the hunter‘s hut, the flatboat, the maize-leaf, the claim, the rude fence, and the backwoods village...

Me Imperturbe
...
Me wherever my life is lived, O to be self-balanced for contingencies,
To confront night, storms, hunger, ridicule, accidents, rebuffs, as the trees and animals do.

Unpopular opinion but I thought it was eh at best
I‘m still going on last year‘s #litsyclassics challenge.
The cover on my Kindle edition is even autumnal looking. #leaves #litsyclassics @Sarah83
The more I read Whitman, the more I love him ?

Love the Whitman quote featured on this restaurant‘s beer menu!
“This is the grass that grows wherever the land is and the water is,
This is the common air that bathes the globe.”

I am sure it must contain multitudes.

A.) This is my first foray into Whitman and I'm very much looking forward to it. B.) I haven't used Litsy in quite some time because I've forgotten about it. I intend on changing this.
Well that's a well-written and succinct thought on equality!
Whitman really paints a picture of all varieties of American people. Here, he talks of prostitute, president, matron, and fisherman within less than a page. Really exemplifies the idea of sharing the same space in the world no matter who you are.
"I will plant companionship thick as trees along the rivers of America, and along the shores of the Great Lakes, and all over the prairies" Litsy, I'm going to need some time. So for now, I beg you, take to heart the words of Wise Old Grey Beard. We are bigger than hate. (3/3)
"The dependence of Liberty shall be lovers, / The continuance of Equality shall be comrades." (2/3)
"Affection shall solve every one of the problems of freedom, / Those who love each other shall be invincible" (1/3)
This poem about President Lincoln's assassination always reminds me of Dead Poets Society.
Whitman just gets me. Every single time.
Having Leaves of Grass for breakfast this morning.
