Going in, I knew this was just a short story collection with Anne Shirley basically forced in here and there. While, yes, that's true, the Anne bits are relatively unobtrusive. Several of the stories were sweet, like "Old Lady Lloyd" and "Each in His Own Tongue," and several had classic LMM tropes like a quarreling couple, a man hater, and old maid sisters. I enjoyed it!

I love this old-times cover that seems to aptly portray this time period - the formal clothes, the toasting, the lady‘s arm around the child. This was delightful - careful vignettes of the citizenry of Avonlea.

I finished the last half of this book last night and I was grinning from ear to ear. 😁 I loved the last few stories in this collection. Several of them are familiar because they adapted the stories to various episodes of Road To Avonlea (has anyone seen it? It‘s great!). I love the setting of PEI and the glimpse into a simpler time. This is far superior to volume 2 of this series. I really enjoyed this! 5⭐️

BarbaraJean I haven‘t finished volume 2 yet, but I think I‘m going to agree with you that this one is far superior! I loved these stories so much. 3y

Belated review, since I‘m now several stories into Further Chronicles! I hadn‘t realized just how much I would enjoy these tales set in and around Avonlea, sprinkled with little references to Anne or other characters from the Anne series. These light, sweet, and often humorous stories were a nice little reading dessert to dip into and indulge in during a busy couple of weeks. #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

“There‘s different kinds of ministers, and each must talk to men in his own tongue if he‘s going to do ‘em any real good,” said old Abel meditatively. “YOUR tongue is music.”

This might be my favorite story from Chronicles of Avonlea—the way it broadens the view of what “ministry” is & how it shows redemption through music rather than sermonizing. There are some issues with the story, but it‘s a lovely picture of grace. #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

“It was really over a question of syntax that we quarreled. Peter told me I‘d have to take him as he was, grammar and all, or go without him. I went without him.”

I mean, I don‘t find this a completely inadequate reason for ending a relationship. 🤣

JenlovesJT47 I loved this story! Something he says towards the end cracked me up, basically calling her out on it. This was a fun one. 3y

I really enjoyed these stories in the universe of the Anne books and especially the references to Anne in some of them.

I also particularly enjoyed the stories “The Courting of Missy Strong” and “The Miracle at Carmody”, probably because they are so similar to some stories in the Anne books.

And the story “Old Lady Lloyd” about an older woman doing what she can for an old beau‘s daughter was so sweat.

So, I had grand plans for this book in the #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead. I was going to keep up with the schedule, post about each story… then the 2nd story was a lot longer than anticipated, I had a really busy week, and here we are on story 10 out of 12 & I‘ve only just caught up with the schedule. 🤦🏻‍♀️ It was fun seeing another glimpse of Anne in today‘s story, though! How‘s everyone else‘s reading going?! What‘s been your favorite story so far?

catebutler I had the SAME thing happen, so I‘ll be catching up today and tomorrow!! 3y
sblbooks I just finished the second story. I'll catch up though. 3y
Jerdencon I‘m on track - the second story was the longest - the rest can be read in 10:15‘min. 3y

TheAromaofBooks I've been really enjoying these!!! 3y
Clare-Dragonfly I‘m really enjoying these! It‘s hard to pick a favorite! 3y
rubyslippersreads I‘m behind too. I like the glimpses of characters from other Anne books—Mrs. Peter Blewett, Rachel Lynde, and of course, Anne herself. 3y
AnneCecilie I‘m on track and love the references to Anne whenever they show up. 3y
quietjenn I'm on track and greatly enjoying them! 3y
Bkwrm7 Same thing happened to me with the second story, but I'm caught up and done now. The Anne references amuse me in part because I feel like some of them really feel like they were kind of squeezed in after the fact to connect to Montgomery's most popular character - kind of a Rollings Reliable Baking Powder thing. 🤣 Looking forward to Further Chronicles! 3y
BarbaraJean @Bkwrm7 Rollings Reliable—😂😂 That‘s a perfect comparison!! I kinda felt the same about the Anne references, as much as I enjoyed them. 3y
BarbaraJean @rubyslippersreads It has been fun to recognize names here and there! Especially Mrs. Blewett, who was exactly the same as when we met her in Anne of Green Gables. Yikes! 3y

So, not nearly so picturesque - physically speaking - as my other #kindredspiritsbuddyreads have been. But, I've been really feeling the short stories lately, so this fits in very nicely!

Did anyone else get “Single Ladies” stuck in their head while reading today‘s #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead story or was it just me? 😂💍 Apparently we didn‘t get enough of Anne‘s matchmaking in the series proper, so Montgomery‘s gotta throw another matchmaker tale in here…😂 It was nice to see a little Anne again, though… and the reference to Echo Lodge!

Jerdencon I loved this story today! 3y

This week completely got away from me—how is it November on Monday?!? 😱

But since November starts on Monday, our #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead of Chronicles of Avonlea also starts on Monday! I‘m tagging those who wanted to be tagged, but if you‘d like to be added to the list, just let me know. Anyone is welcome to join. 😊

Looking forward to diving into these short stories with all of you!

As our #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead is finishing up the Emily books, would anyone like to head back to Avonlea in November with these two collections of short stories? In the versions I have, there are 12 stories in Chronicles and 15 in Further Chronicles, so if we continued our same format, we could do a story a day from Nov. 1st - 27th, with a book-end discussion on the 28th. I'm tagging current & past buddy readers--comment if you're interested!

catebutler I‘d love to join in!! 🤗 3y
Bkwrm7 I would definitely be in! 3y

TheAromaofBooks Yes!! I was going to ask you if there were some Kindred Spirit reads planned post-Emily!!! 3y
quietjenn Yes! I've never read any LMM short stories, so this will be fun! 3y
Hooked_on_books Thanks for the tag! I won‘t be joining, but I hope everyone enjoys the stories! 3y
LeahBergen I‘ll pass on this round (as I‘ve read both) but I‘ll be following along with all the posts, as usual. 😊 3y
Clare-Dragonfly I still haven‘t managed to get to Emily‘s Quest, but this is already on my Kindle (I think) so I‘m in! 3y
AnneCecilie I‘ll be joining in. The library has the first book and seems like the second is online. 3y
EclecticBookLover Thank you! I loved this buddy read, but i fell of with Rainbow Valley. I'm gonna have to pass on these. Too much else going on right now. 😊 3y

rubyslippersreads I think I‘ll do what @LeahBergen is doing and follow along. (edited) 3y
BarbaraJean @catebutler @Bkwrm7 @sblbooks @JenLovesJT47 @Jerdencon Yaaaay! Glad to have you all reading along for this one! @TheAromaofBooks Yes, more Kindred Spirits reads!! I'm happy to just continue on through the LMM bibliography, to be honest! @quietjenn I've only read a few of her Christmas short stories (thanks to Serial Reader a few years ago), so I'm super interested to read these ones set in Avonlea. 3y
BarbaraJean @Clare-Dragonfly @AnneCecilie If either of you need a digital version, both are available for free on Project Gutenberg at www.gutenberg.org. I have both on my Kindle as part of a collection called “Anne of Green Gables Stories“ which has all of Anne (except Windy Poplars & Anne of Ingleside), plus Chronicles/Further Chronicles and lots more--looks like that version is $1.99 on Amazon right now (at least in the US). 3y
BarbaraJean @LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads 👍 Would you like to be tagged for any of the Chronicles posts, or just follow along with the hashtag? @Hooked_on_books @EclecticBookLover Totally understand! Let me know if you want to jump in again later on for more LMM reads. 😊 3y

Though not as good as the Anne of Green Gables series, I enjoyed the short stories, especially the one where Anne and Diana made an appearance!

Mehso-so

The Chronicles of Avonlea centres around all the people who were in Avonlea during the time when Anne came to Green Gables.

There are twelve chapters and each chapter is a short story about one, or a group of people. Anne does make a cameo appearance in a few of the chapters.

I'm not a fan of short stories and I did struggle to stay interested however with just one book to go I'm determined to read every book Anne has featured in.

True literary comfort food! 😊
Also, earl grey tea with whipped coconut topping is pretty amazing.
