In other upsetting news, the author of Thirteen Reasons Why, Jay Asher, is a fucking creep.

He admitted to coercing multiple women at the SCBWI conference into an affair and then threatening them to keep it a secret.

This fits into a few others accusations against him, James Dashner and Sherman Alexie a few months ago.

I didn‘t like the book #ThirteenReasonsWhy but I really enjoyed the first season on #Netflix. I am currently watching the second season. I can‘t decide if I like this second season. I don‘t think I‘m a fan of Hannah appearing as a ghost... Have any of you watched the second season yet?

#booktoscreen #booktotv #13reasonswhy #season2

2BR02B I read a few articles that derided the second season as sensationalist and heavy on shock value, and have decided not to watch it. 1y
ephemeralwaltz Yeah I wasn't a fan of ghost Hannah but really enjoyed the season regardless! Get ready for a crazy ride. 1y
ephemeralwaltz @2BR02B for sure, the last episodes. I don't think I'll be watching the 3rd season because it seems they decided to close the Hannah storyline and will focus on other stories from the way they left things...not a fan 🙅 But I did enjoy the season and really goes deeper into the magnitude of the problem of rape culture. 1y

tonyahoswalt I'm slowly watching season 2 1y
OrangeMooseReads Didn‘t like the second season. I didn‘t love the first season, it was ok, but I found the book much more interesting. 1y
GloVerdino I thought the book was great, but I did not like the show at all - I thought it lost the real essence of the book. And I will not be watching season 2 1y
AJones I also preferred season 1 over 2. I haven‘t read the book, as of yet. So I can‘t compare. 1y
phatsallylee I haven't read the book. The first season was great. The second season tried to hard. It was all over the place. They are making a 3rd season so who knows where that one will go. 1y
HufflepuffGirl90 I‘m the opposite, I enjoyed the book but didn‘t like how they did the show. I thought it was really missing something that made the book so good. 1y
LibrarianRyan It was way over the top but I did enjoy it. 1y
Purrfectpages I only watched episode one of season two, but I was a bit bored. I‘m not sure a second season was necessary. And I hear there will be a third! 1y
Jess7 I thought season 2 of the show started off a little shaky and part of me wanted it to be over until it built up toward the last half of the episodes and I then I liked it a lot more. Season 2 was very suspenseful toward the end of it. If you watched season 1 and liked it— it‘s worth watching season 2. 1y
Jess7 Personally the reason I disliked the book so much was I did not think any of the characters were developed enough for me to care about them and as such I thought the important topic of suicide wasn‘t handled in a way to make it resonate. I felt the series did a better job showing the real impact of suicide. 1y

Day 9: Favorite Diverse Read #janinbooks18
Thirteen Reasons Why has a wide variety of diverse characters. I know a lot of people don‘t like the book but I loved it. What did you think of it?

Daughter_of_Opulence I enjoyed reading it. I read it last year and it did give me a lot of feelings. I can understand why some people don't like it but I also think it's something that has to be talked about and addressed. 2y
Eggs I recommend it 2y
Steph_EE I really enjoyed it but can also understand those that don‘t. Can‘t believe it‘s been 10 years! 2y

Finally found this at the store and grabbed it up! Been wanting to read this book forever now. Hopefully it‘s as good as I‘ve heard. I really loved the show and I always think the book is better than the movie/tv show 98% of the time. Now I‘ll be reading 3 books at once!

My pick for #JubilantJuly Day 26: #Controversial is #13ReasonsWhy written by #JayAsher , screenplay adapted by #Netflix - I did NOT like this #book for a few reasons, but most importantly because it lacked major #character #development. HOWEVER, I absolutely loved the #Netflix series and the corresponding #BeyondTheReasons after-show. I thought Netflix did a great job developing the characters and tackling the serious issue of #teensuicide

TrishB Funny how opinions are so split on this 😀 I really like the book and not the series. I thought the series actually went too far into sensationalism and I didn't like the messing about with the tape orders etc. It did good for awareness raising though. 2y
Jess7 @TrishB I very rarely choose the tv series/movie over the book, but in this case, I watched the series first and felt like the book rushed through everything. I didn't care about any of the characters and I didn't feel like it showed the horrible impact that suicide has on the people left behind. I felt like the series did a good job showing that suicide is anything but glamorous. But I agree I'm happy all of this is provoking a discussion 2y
Onceuponatime Interesting because I did not like the Netflix series! From the viewpoint of a teacher, mother of teens, and former bully victim, I found myself "not buying it." I did not think it accurately represented the high school social scene or the path to suicide. That said, the final episodes were horrible to watch and definitely let me thinking, as I'm sure they did for many people! 2y

Jess7 @Onceuponatime I understand how you feel about not being able to buy into all of it. I think there were certainly some liberties the show took to keep watchers entertained and the suspense building that might not have otherwise happened IRL. I just found it addicting. I do think if teens watch it parents should open up a dialogue with them to discuss. 2y
Jess7 @Onceuponatime Despite how difficult some of the scenes were to watch, I did appreciate the care the series took in making sure the rape and suicide scenes looked and felt real. I think in doing so, they did a good job of showing how painful, real and final suicide is. Did you watch the after show, #BehindTheReasons ? 2y
Jess7 On a #lessseriousnote I had a hard time watching the series at first bc the main character #ClayJensen looks like a cross between an old #exboyfriend from 10+ years ago and one of my youngest #brotherinlaw 😂🤔😣🤣😜 @Onceuponatime @TrishB @britt_brooke (edited) 2y
heylaurenmack The only real problem I had with the Netflix version was after Clay gets hit by that car earlyish in the episodes. WHAT PARENT LETS THEIR KID JUST GO WALKABOUT WHEN HE PROBABLY HAS A CONCUSSION?! 2y
Onceuponatime @Jess7 No, I didn't know there was another show! I'll have to watch it. I was probably just ready to be done with the series. 😆 you're right though, the show was a good starting point to talk about serious issues with teenagers. 2y
Jess7 @heylaurenmack not all parents act the way we think they should, 😏☹️but he was 17 I think and he didn't tell them he got hit by a car. I don't have children, but I can see how it would be difficult to raise a teenage boy (almost an adult) and I can definitely see how my husband's parents wouldn't have made him go to the doctor if he said he was fine. But I agree, if it was my son I would hope, I would of inquired more. (edited) 2y
Jess7 @Onceuponatime please do watch it and let me know what you think on here after you do. I think it was only about 30 minutes or so. I wish they would of made it an episode of the original series instead of a separate show, but it's worth watching. The cast and crew (including the producers) talk about the issues involved in the series and how and why they did certain things in the show. I really liked it and thought it was a good wrap up. 2y
Chibi I wasn't a fan of either to be honest. I stand with CAMH on the issue and just... ugh. No. Not a fan. But I'm glad you liked it :) 2y
