This has been on my TBR forever. Finally picked it up and am so glad I did. The drawings are incredible. They convey a sense of emotion with no words. The way they show time passing is unique. The story is touching and shows how immigrants have to feel their way through all new situations. I highly recommend for the strong emotional imagery.

I lost track of time while reading this one today in the library.

A beautiful, wordless interpretation of the immigrant experience.

I really enjoyed this one. Its a story of emigration told entirely through illustrations. I love the bizarre world tan creates.

Wow. I borrowed this from the library recently and all I can say is: this book is AMAZING.

Stunning art and a unique story! I wish there was more of it!

This is a beautiful graphic novel that documents the experiences of an immigrant through a series of illustrations. It is a very quick read, but I‘m thrilled to have added this to my library. I‘m sure I‘ll be revisiting this multiple times in the future!

Wow, a graphic novel with no words at all. The artist does an excellent job of creating a sense of foreignness. It‘s supposed to be like he is emigrating to America, but the artist made it look so weird and crazy that it gives you a sense of what it must be like for immigrants to try to make their way in a place where they don‘t know the language or customs. At times a little difficult to follow, but glad it was a happy ending.

I just finished this tearjerker this morning. The artwork was beautiful ❤️ a pick for sure.

Very very beautiful and very very strange.

A wordless graphic novel of the experience of leaving your home and starting afresh somewhere new, somewhere you don‘t know the language, the food, the people, the animals. But somewhere you‘ll meet and learn the stories of fellow refugees. And somewhere your children will eventually know as home.

Quite stunning.

This was well done. The illustrations are beautiful. I was able to figure out what was going on, at least at the start and end. There were a few things in the middle that confused me a bit. There were no words at all, and I felt like it was meant to represent how someone who doesn‘t speak the language might interpret things, but some of it was just so odd, I couldn‘t quite figure it out. This wordless graphic novel is one of my favorites. It follows the journey of an immigrant fleeing adangerous world to a Utopia where he has no friends and limited grasp on the language in order to rescue his family. He hears the stories of other immigrants along the way. Perfect for #AcrossApril's #arrival prompt! @Eggs

So blown away by Tan's talent. I wonder how long it took him to create this because there's so much detail. It looks like photographs. Graphic novels are really popular right now, but this is the first one I've seen that is totally wordless.

This is a stunningly beautiful and creative graphic novel. It beautifully conveys complex concepts such as being a refugee in a new country and needing to rescue your family from a terrifying country without using a single word. This is a story about a man who leaves his home and family to seek better opportunities somewhere else. The illustrations really shows how hard it is to settle down somewhere else where this are different. And the illustrations are gorgeous

Newsflash (not): I really need to stop borrowing library books and read what‘s on my shelves.

I read this yesterday morning waiting for my mother to return from a sleepover. I sat in a comfortable chair and drank coffee out of a blue mug.

This one is a pick + for me. A beautifully drawn story about a migrant on a very different world from ours. It is wordless and effectively free from colour, but still beautiful and engaging and thought provoking. One of very few books that i will pick up again and again and still enjoy each time. Five stars Shaun Tan!!

It took a bit to find a picture book but this one was so interesting. The artwork is amazing and the concept the artist used to show the trials of immigration is just fantastic. Something I normally wouldn't pick up for sure. Thanks @AnansiGirl for the rec 👍

I‘m so glad you pointed me to this book in Tan‘s backlist @suzisteffen I loved this book. Tan has an amazing eye for details in his drawings and this makes his characters come to life. In this story without words, we follow an immigrant in a new world and since it‘s new to us as well, we feel what he‘s feeling.

Another example of Tan‘s details. Here he captures all the looks of confusion and not understanding. You don‘t need text, with this eye for detail.

I absolutely love Tan‘s eye for details in his drawings.

I really enjoyed my first wordless graphic novel. Shaun Tan's illustrations were stunning. The story of his parents immigration from Malaysia to Australia.

Not really a quote, but since this book doesn‘t have words, I felt this to be appropriate.

⭐️5/5 gorgeous book. It has no words but tells the story of an immigrant trying to create a better life for his family.
