I was stunned + traumatised by this story of a teenager in 90s Glasgow growing into a sexuality that is not acceptable in a v masculine society where his brother's violence dominates. Drawing on the theme of mother/son depicted so well in shuggie bain this is a brutal book with also tenderness of a sister he loves, but the forbidden love of Catholic James. Some scenes are tough but it is 5*

I thought this was NonFiction but it‘s not entirely that. The parts that I believe are autobiographical I liked but when it veered into the fiction story telling I got lost. I wanted more of Jeanette‘s story.

#Booked2022 reads for the second quarter of the year. Truly, where is this year going??

20/22 This book… I only finished it last night so I am still processing but what I can say is that it took me over. I‘m usually a bit of a book floozy and have a book, audio and kindle on the go at the same time. But not with this one. It took my complete attention. I read it very slowly, much slower then average but for me that‘s what the story warranted. I needed time to be fully in it. Sometimes (when it got to the 2020 section) that was ⬇️

#booked2022 #acomingoutstory This was an informative, touching graphic memoir about Maia‘s discovery of em gender identity. I had not heard of Spivak pronouns prior to this. There‘s a lot here that I didn‘t know. I appreciate having this memoir for an experience very different from my own and so glad that e felt secure enough to write this. My only quibble is that the art style is not to my liking, but it‘s the story that is really important.

I don‘t read a lot of NF and even less that are classed as memoirs! But I‘m glad I read this, an informative, engaging read. There is a lot of heart ache in this book, but the author offers their advice on getting through tough things and how it was for them, in the hope that it will help others.
Well worth a read.

A little disorienting at first, but overall an enjoyable read about the narrator's family life in #iran and #france. I loved the way the stories flowed and intertwined, weaving towards what the narrator dubs as THE EVENT.

I didn‘t completely fall in love with this like I did with the first one, and I can‘t quite put my finger on why because this was a beautiful story.
