After We Were Stolen is compelling. Avery deals with some rough situations, but despite the heavy subject matter, it's fast paced and reads easily. If you prefer your beach reads to be something grittier than a kissing book, After We Were Stolen gets my vote.

I've known Brooke for about 30 years so I'm extremely proud of her achievement. It really is good. I'm also proud that I didn't cry like pageant mom during her reading.

Cults—religious and not—function on the foundation of specific language. Montell explains how they draw members in and keep them hooked. She also points out how MANY types of entities use this language to achieve cult-like ends—businesses, fitness companies, indeed practically any brand wanting to be the next big thing.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Montell specifically talks about SoulCycle — then I saw THIS article today. (Apologies for the paywall.) https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/05/23/peoplehood-soulcycle-relation... 2y
kspenmoll Thanks for the article Barbara-SoulCycle etc new to me. Will read your review 2y

This was utterly fascinating, but totally not what I expected. I thought it would be mainly about her struggle to leave her strict Hasidic sect, but instead that was only the last chapter and the afterword, and there wasn‘t much detail.

Instead, the book was about life inside the sect, particularly the treatment of women and children, as well as her failed marriage that ultimately caused her to leave.

LeahBergen I found this fascinating, too. 2y
BarbaraBB O watched the series on Netflix and was very impressed. 2y
DivineDiana @BarbaraBB I also watched the Netflix series, and found it well done! 2y
squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB @DivineDiana - I‘m definitely going to watch it, now that I‘ve read the book; can‘t do it the other way round! 😁 2y

The author compares her journey of returning to prayer with the seasons at her beloved Schulenberg Prairie. It is a very reflexive book about how nature can influence prayers. I think I will be rereading this. #JoyousJanuary @Andrew65 My first book for #Booked2022 #AboutCultOrReligion @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft

So DAMNED good 😊 How someone can make linguistics entertaining, engaging and extremely fascinating is a real talent. A mix of marketing, psychology and sociology mixed with personal stories; Montell shares how word play can alter one‘s mood, mind and habits. I highly recommend this book. #Booked2022 #AboutCultOrReligion #PoP22 #SameAuthorYouReadLastYear #NF22 #QuietAndMeditative Shoutout to @britt_brooke #Top21of21 also my #Doublespin 🎉🎉

julesG Montell definitely has a talent. 2y

Cortg I‘m about half way through the audio and have a lengthy drive or two today. Hoping to finish it soon. I find cults so damn intriguing, mostly the why, why do people follow these leaders?! This book is super interesting! 2y
britt_brooke So happy you loved it, too! 🤗 2y

Mehso-so

Fascinating insight to the authors upbringing and I applaud her for making decisions that she felt would make her life better.
I‘ve given it a so-so because I just couldn‘t engage fully with her writing style and sometimes it spoiled the flow of the story for me.

BarbaraBB Have you watched the series? I loved it. But I haven‘t read the book. 2y
Cinfhen It‘s a really crazy story but unfortunately it really does happen in certain ultra orthodox communities. The series does change some of the actual events/facts but it was very engaging @BarbaraBB 2y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘ve read several Scientology books, from apostate memoirs to Leah Remimi‘s celebrity perspective to Dianetics (yep), but never an LRH biography. Thanks for the rec @Leftcoastzen ! What a weird dude. Like most cult leaders, he‘s a bombastic, charismatic, compulsive liar. But unlike others, he was a prolific science fiction author who started a religion to make dough. Scientology is his greatest fiction.

Leftcoastzen Glad you liked it ! He was just bananas! A man with an ever evolving weird plan! 2y
Lesanne This looks really interesting !! 2y
Cinfhen Ohhhh, maybe I need to read this for #Booked2022 #AboutCultOrReligion 2y
britt_brooke @Lesanne It really is! 2y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen It‘s a good read, but a bit dry. So just keep that in mind. 😉 2y

Despite @rachelsbrittain ‘s so-so on this one, my love of all things cultish made me want to give this a try.

It‘s a look at the author‘s childhood in and leaving the Children of God cult. I watched a show on ID about three women who were in as kids and it was equal parts disturbing and fascinating.

I‘ll tag anyone interested in my review. #NewReleaseTuesday #audiobook

Pretty sky here in KY this afternoon!

britt_brooke I haven‘t read much about this cult. #stacked 2y
rachelsbrittain I hope you'll like it! It was definitely worth the read for me just didn't blow me away. I'll be interested to see what you think. 2y

britt_brooke @Suet624 Right?! I‘ve only read 2 books that I can think of. Usually, I dig deeper! 😂😅 2y
BiblioLitten I recently watched Midsommar and was equally disturbed and fascinated too 2y
