Trying to catch up on my #BOTMBacklog (and the annual #BOTMChallenge) before the 12/26 deadline! This debut novel, set in 1995 Lansing, MI makes for a a quick and compelling read! On the cusp of turning eleven, narrator KB and her older sister Nia spend the summer with their Granddaddy in this coming-of-age story. I loved the many references to Anne of Green Gables and KB‘s insatiable curiosity. It touches on some heavy topics but handled well!
I‘m having a little gothic/horror weekend. ☠️
The Keep is a gothic revenge tale about two cousins and a castle in Europe. Tagged ⬆️
Hide is a thriller/horror tale about a girl playing a game of survival in an amusement park. Tagged ⬇️
Hidden Pictures is supernatural horror about a kid being haunted in a house in New Jersey. He draws increasingly disturbing pictures for his babysitter. Tagged ⬇️
Had a really good reading night!
I‘m reading the tagged book in print for #sciencebookbyawoman for #booked2021. So far I‘m really enjoying it even though light-based physics is my worst science subject. (Only B I got in a pre-vet science!)
Also, why didn‘t I read Priestdaddy on audio for the #botmchallenge back in 2017?? Such a great #audiobook so far! She has a novel coming out in February.

This was one of the first #BOTM books I got 3 years ago. I‘m hoping to meet my goal of catching up completely by the end of the year. Wish me luck, only 33 to go! 🤦🏻♀️
Anyhoo, this wasn‘t terrible for a debut and it had so much potential, but ultimately was very predictable imo. Not so bad I wouldn‘t give another of her books a try. 3⭐️
There is some Litsy love for this book,I snapped it up on a Kindle daily deal.Imagine a place not beautiful, but a social experiment.Maybe you‘re a criminal or a witness to a crime, if you agree to live in this town & get your memories erased, you get a new name , a new start. An exciting read w/ many twists & turns , when things start to unravel , I was glad I was there to enjoy the ride.Darkly humorous w/ moral dilemmas & interesting characters.
The reference to Nothing to See Here was the highlight of this book for me. I expected so much and the premise was good (two parents who are willing to sacrifice all for their art, even their children who are part of their performance), but unfortunately I didn‘t care for the characters nor the art nor the lives of the children as adults.

This is not the book if you want to know why someone would disappear into the woods for 27 years when he was 20 years old. It remains unclear but what makes this book so compelling is the how and what our society does with someone who really seems to want to be removed from humanity when what he has done to survive is a crime. I thought Finkel did a great job in telling this real tale that perhaps could only have happened in Maine‘s woods.
I kind of liked this one. The two lying women and the boy in between. Both of the women make one stupid decision after the other and it‘s frustrating to read, I wanted to tell them what to do more than once. It‘s a good thing when a book does that, when it has such an effect on you. Especially these days it is good to be frustrated about something else beside our health and situation.
