The Blinds | Adam Sternbergh
A blistering thriller from the Edgar awardnominated author of Shovel Readya speculative modern Western with elements of Cormac McCarthy, Jim Thompson, and the Coen brothers Imagine a place populated by criminalspeople plucked from their lives, with their memories altered, whove been granted new identities and a second chance. Welcome to The Blinds, a dusty town in rural Texas populated by misfits who dont know if theyve perpetrated a crime or just witnessed one. Whats clear to them is that if they leave, they will end up dead. For eight years, Sheriff Calvin Cooper has kept an uneasy peacebut after a suicide and a murder in quick succession, the towns residents revolt. Cooper has his own secrets to protect, so when his new deputy starts digging, he needs to keep one step ahead of herand the mysterious outsiders who threaten to tear the whole place down. The more he learns, the more the hard truth is revealed: The Blinds is no sleepy hideaway. Its simmering with violence and deception, aching heartbreak and dark betrayals.

This book was interesting and thought-provoking. What would happen is a medley of criminals had their memories wiped and were all placed in an isolated town? Are they still guilty and bad people even if they don't remember what they've done, and can't believe that they'd even commit a crime?

If you like this premise, you should also check out The I-Land on Netlfix. It was cheesy but binge-worthy.

#EverybodysHappyNowadays in The Blinds. The inhabitants of this rural Texas town are either witnesses or perpetrators of a crime, but are unsure which due to having their memory of the crime erased. A clever concept with a solid execution, I really enjoyed Sternbergh's book & look forward to catching up on his backlist before his next book is published.

Loved this book! Fantastic premise about a group of strangers who may or may not have committed horrific crimes who then have their memories of the crimes erased and now live in a special type of witness protection in an isolated Texas town. What could possibly go wrong, you ask? Everything! Could not put this one down!

I finished my BOTM pick from August 2017, (that‘s how far behind I am)! I really enjoyed this book. I was a little hesitant at first to pick it, but once I started reading I found myself really enjoying the story and characters. I liked that the book centered around criminals that had no idea they were criminals. I feel like it was an interesting concept. I will definitely be reading more from this author!

In The Blinds, there is a town in the Texas desert filled with those who wish to disappear/hide though with their memories wiped of certain life events. An intriguing premise, this book was great in places but uneven overall, then devolved into dark, gratuitous violence in a way that didn‘t serve the story and turned my stomach. I can‘t get behind this one. #botm

Terrific read with an original plot.
THE BLINDS was a cinematic and suspenseful thriller different from anything you can find on the shelves right now and that is a huge plus for me. I liked the feeling I had from the beginning of something lurking beneath the surface despite the apparent calm of CAESURA, a town that is one of a kind, a community full of criminal that have no idea of what they have done with their violent memories erased.

blurb
Libretto_Reviews
The Blinds | Adam Sternbergh

Almost at the end of it and I can say that no matter how the end goes, this is different and I like it. I like the idea of a bunch of strangers with violence erased from their memories, inflicted or endured, hiding somewhere in Texas without knowing who are they hiding from, if they criminals or witnesses .
Original concept for a thriller.

It‘s about a small almost completely unknown town called Caesura, adequately nicknamed The Blinds, and it‘s inhabitants. The citizens have most of their memories erased and have little choice but to live together. What could go wrong when even they have no memory of their own past deeds? Who committed ghastly crimes? Who‘s innocent? Who can be trusted? Who runs this crazy experimental town? Can they be trusted?

You know how when you watch a puppy it‘s like the cutest, most awesome thing but it‘s also a disaster? That‘s this book. The premise is fantastic but it all over the place. The writing felt like 3 different people wrote it, the plot was more consistent than the writing but there were too many damn people and I hated the character names. It read like LOST meets Welcome to Night Vale meets The Pines which is cool but also a hot mess. But also great.

This book had a great premise but by halfway through it felt like it abandoned all that potential for a more random and jumbled storyline. Certain secrets were given away too soon, and most of them weren't very interesting, just sad/depressing. By the end I felt like there were a lot of plot holes, the many characters weren't being put to good use, and ultimately there wasn't much intrigue or meat behind the mystery.

kendra I‘m 60% if the way through and agree. It seems like there are so many different characters who happen to be showing up with different agendas at the same time... I‘ve been wondering if it will come together in a cohesive way. Maybe not. 2y

I cherished this book. I liked the concept so much, of a gated community filled with criminals with erased memories.
Then there is this suicide and a murder and everything starts falling apart in The Blinds, as the community is called. So much happens, enough twists to keep me going. Just until the end, which was the weakest part of the novel I think. Still a solid 4 star read though!

RiotMom I totally agree with you. The end was a bit of a sticking point for me as well, but I really loved the concept of the story. (edited) 2y

Pickpick

Where do I start with this one? It had me hooked from the first chapter, it just draws you right in & doesn‘t let go. In the town of Caesura,pop48, in SW Texas, the residents aren‘t really residents. They‘re part of a social experiment by a company called The Institute, some are criminals, some are innocent witnesses, all have had their memory erased & given a new name and a bungalow. The only rules are No Visitors, No Contact & No Return.5⭐️

Cinfhen Great review!!! 2y

In my library enjoying this sunny Saturday afternoon, reading The Blinds and listening to the Hubby and kidlets putting in outdoor PowerPoints in our front yard to power all the blowups & lights this Xmas. I‘m so lucky the youngest boy is an electrician. The Hubby has now bought more lights & blowups, including a 3.6metre tall Santa (yep I said 3.6m) three moving reindeer & is talking about getting a 2m reindeer for the roof! #GriswoldsOfOz

TrishB Definitely need to see pictures when they're up! 2y
Cinfhen Sooo echoing @TrishB 🙌🏻😂 2y
