#BookReport 40/22

I finished two books that didn‘t make it to the #Bookerprize2022 shortlist but that I liked nevertheless, especially the tagged one.
And I read last year‘s Noble Prize winner. I was glad I did, he writes beautifully!

BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I read your mail. What a days you have had. I‘ll write back soon 😘 2mo
TrishB Solid week 👍🏻 2mo
Cinfhen I liked both the Bookers you read this week more than the actual Bookers that made the short list!!! Life has definitely been challenging but I‘m starting to feel more like myself xx 2mo

I wasn‘t really interested in John Wilkes Booth, who I hadn‘t heard of before. Also he and his family didn‘t really come to life for me. But I did enjoy reading about the historical context of the American civil war even though the book could have done with some editing. It felt very repetitive at times.
A light pick, definitely not worth the #BookerPrize2022

squirrelbrain Yes, it was a strange nomination wasn‘t it? 2mo
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain It was indeed. I liked it but really don‘t see why it was nominated! 2mo
rmaclean4 It was not a favorite of mine! 2mo

charl08 Yes, one I was glad I could borrow from the library! 2mo
jlhammar Well done on another Booker pick done! Sorry you didn't enjoy it quite as much as I did. I appreciated it even more after watching this interesting Virtual Evening with Fowler and Ruth Ozeki:
BarbaraBB @jlhammar I think the book might be more interesting for Americans, considering the subject? 2mo
jlhammar @BarbaraBB Yeah, I think that definitely could be the case. Might have been even more interesting for me because I had read and enjoyed both Horse by Geraldine Brooks and Spying on the South by Tony Horwitz not long before reading Booth and they all complement each other really well. 2mo
Suet624 @jlhammar Thank you for the link!
Suet624 I'm sorry you didn't like it but I completely understand. I'm not exactly sure why I liked it but I did. I think I liked it for the same reasons you mentioned ... I was surprised and interested by some of the stories of the Civil War and Lincoln's quotes. I was unaware of the riots in NY when Lincoln instituted a draft and the description of that will stay with me. 2mo

This was much more fun than I expected. I enjoyed the story in the story in the story and although I guessed the final twist early on this still was an enjoyable read about the American financial market in the fist quarter of the 20th century.

It wouldn‘t have made my #BookerPrize2022 shortlist though!

BarbaraBB Also I used this one for the Duology prompt in #pop22. Not sure what a duology is but I think I could use two books with a similar title. @KarenUK @RaeLovesToRead @Cortg @Laughterhp @Cinfhen @Megabooks @squirrelbrain 2mo
Megabooks Yes! This was a favorite from the list and an excellent audiobook. Great review!! 2mo
Megabooks A duology as far as I know is two-book series 👍🏻 2mo

BarbaraBB @Megabooks Oops then this is foul play 😃 2mo
sarahbarnes Agreed - I liked this one more than I expected for sure. It was a fun read. 2mo
squirrelbrain I liked this one too, but it‘s not really stayed with me since reading it. 2mo
Cinfhen I liked this one but it hasn‘t made such a lasting impression…honestly only a handful from the longlist have and NONE made the shortlist 🤪 2mo
jlhammar I'll put this in the “maybe someday“ category. My husband read and disliked Diaz's debut, In the Distance, so much that I've been scared off of him. Great review! 2mo
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain @Cinfhen It won‘t be really memorable I think. My fave on the shortlist is The Trees I guess. I also loved Oh William but it doesn‘t feel like a Booker winner 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2mo
Cathythoughts I‘m nearly finished Trust. I actually Love it. I loved In the Distance too. I‘m looking forward to The Trees. 2mo
Suet624 I agree that this one and Booth are strange books for the Booker Prize. This was a very low pick for me. 2mo
KristiAhlers I just got my Goldsboro copy of this one in the mail today. I‘m starting right after dinner. 2mo

#WeeklyForecast 38/22

I just started Seven Moons for the #Bookerprize2022. It looks challenging. If there‘s time I want to start the tagged book for #ReadingAfrica2022.

Cinfhen I have Seven Moons too but im just not inspired to read it!!! Curious to see how you get on with it!! Your NF looks good 😊 2mo
Megabooks Great picks for the week! 2mo
BookwormM I really enjoyed 7 moons hope you do 🤞 2mo

BarbaraBB @Cinfhen @BookwormM I bailed after only 20 pages… I just couldn‘t do it. So many pov‘s, names, I had no clue what it was about and am not in the mood to find out 🤷🏻‍♀️ #hibernation 2mo
Vansa I'm not surprised 😂I find Karunatilaka quite unreadable, honestly, and some of his metaphors are so idiotic, I'm baffled an editor let them through.A lot of modern novels could do with extensive editing,in my opinion, and authors should be told not to be so self indulgent! 2mo
Cinfhen I fear I‘m gonna be in the same headspace as you, Barbara!!! And I agree @Vansa some editors are really preening to their authors 2mo
BookwormM Oh no that is a shame maybe when the headspace is right … 2mo

But, but…The Colony 😩 Maps of Our Spectacular Bodies 😩

BookwormM I know I am gutted too 3mo
AnneCecilie I‘m reading The Colony now and really enjoying it, but I haven‘t read anything from the longlist to have an opinion except that I DNFed Maps. 3mo
Suet624 @annececilie You might want to check out The Trees. Another fave of mine. 3mo
See All 13 Comments
AnneCecilie @Suet624 I heard it was out of print, I haven‘t seen it anywhere yet. But it‘s one I definitely want to read. I‘m also waiting on several of the others from the library. 3mo
Suet624 @AnneCecilie are you in the US? 3mo
AnneCecilie @Suet624 No, I‘m in Europe 3mo
sarahbarnes I really cannot believe The Colony is not on the shortlist. 😞 3mo
BarbaraBB I am so disappointed too about these two not making the shortlist. 3mo
BarbaraBB @AnneCecilie Amazon sells it for 10 euros! 3mo
Suet624 @sarahbarnes @BarbaraBB @annececile thankfully the longlist was quite good this year. Still have a few of the shortlist to read. 3mo
Bookwomble I've only read Treacle Walker from the long list, and I'll be very happy if Garner wins 😊 I understand he's not everyone's cup of tea, but I truly loved that book. 3mo
Suet624 @Bookwomble I‘ll have to try to find that one. 3mo
Bookwomble @Suet624 The Award night happens to be on Alan Garner's 88th birthday: I don't know if the judges are at all sentimental, but if that swings it his way, I'd be happy. He's shockingly underappreciated. 3mo

Although, I haven't been able to read the entire longlist this time, I can't to miss #BookerPrize2022 prediction party. I finished 8 books, After Sappho and Nightcrawling have the current status ‘in the progress‘, Case Study and Booth are on the waiting list, while for Glory - I‘m not sure if I'm going to read it at all. So here's my shortlist …

squirrelbrain Great choices! Looking forward to seeing the *actual* list! 3mo
BarbaraBB Glad you‘re sharing your favorites. Mine are quite similar though I haven‘t read Trust yet. I have high expectations though! And I‘m not interested in Glory either 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3mo
Simona I‘m quite excited for actual list too @squirrelbrain I absolutely loved Trust @BarbaraBB especially very interesting structure of the book. I‘m looking at my shortlist, and today I‘d switch Case Study with the Seven Moons … 3mo

This was not for me. It felt flat and repetitive and I skimmed the pages more than I read them 🤷🏻‍♀️

(Pic: Busan, South Korea)

rmaclean4 Good to know! I will read it if it is on the short list. 3mo
Ruthiella Another amazing photo! 😍 3mo
charl08 Oh no, I loved this. Please don't throw it our the window...🤣 3mo

squirrelbrain Great photo! I agree with you complexity; pretty much skimmed my way through this one; it‘s right at the bottom of my list I‘m afraid! 3mo
BarbaraBB @charl08 Lol, I won‘t. I read your review and I hoped I‘d love the@book as much as you did but unfortunately I felt like @squirrelbrain about it! 3mo
JamieArc I pretty much bailed on this one too, for now. I‘ll pick it back up and finish it later. I had high hopes for it, unfortunately. 3mo
Megabooks You‘re high up! Cool! Sorry the book was disappointing though. 3mo
Cinfhen View is fabulous sorry the book wasn‘t 3mo
MrsK I think my expectations were too high when I read this…or actually…bailed before I was halfway through 😁. I felt more like disconnected short stories too me. 3mo
BarbaraBB @MrsK Yes and a bit repetitive 3mo
Graywacke Bummer. The title is a draw. 2mo
BarbaraBB @Graywacke Don‘t mind me. Many people loved it. 2mo
Graywacke @BarbaraBB i definitely appreciate, and like having, your impression. It might help me get in the right mental space when I start. 🙂 2mo

I just bailed on After Sappho and I won‘t be able to finish Booth before the announcement of the shortlist so here are my favorites for that shortlist.

Note: I haven‘t read Trust, Glory, and The Seven Moons yet but out of all others these are my favorites. My ultimate vote for now would be for The Colony.

I hope the judges agree with me!

jlhammar That‘s a great favorites stack! I think mine will include 4 or 5 of the same. Still working on finishing Nightcrawling and Booth. 3mo
BarbaraBB @jlhammar Looking forward to your choices! 3mo
Cinfhen Gorgeous photo ♥️I like your picks and think a few will definitely be on the shortlist 3mo

Cinfhen How was your flight???? 3mo
Megabooks Great photo!! I enjoyed many of these, and I‘m excited to get to the colony. 3mo
squirrelbrain We have 4 the same, so I hope the judges agree with you / us too! 3mo
batsy Lovely stack. I got nowhere close to even attempting the whole longlist, but a few of those are on my TBR regardless of whether they make the shortlist. I'm interested to see what makes the cut. 3mo
Ruthiella Can‘t wait to find out what made the shortlist! I 3mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I took a sleeping pill (which I never do) and that helped to pass the time enormously 🤣😴 3mo
Hazel2019 Colony is in my top 2 along with Trust. Can‘t wait for the shortlist announcement! 3mo
BookwormM Nearly the same as my predictions 3mo

A psychological drama, totally up my alley. A very unreliable narrator meets an anti-psychiatrist for some psychiatric sessions in which she wants to discover if he drove her sister to suicide.

I was very much engaged by this book, but not sure yet if it‘ll make my shortlist for the #BookerPrize2022

TrishB Great pic 😁 3mo
squirrelbrain Love the pic - it totally fits with the book! I agree with you - I liked it but, as you know, it didn‘t make my shortlist. 3mo
Cinfhen Fabulous photo!!!!!!!! My copy arrived but I‘m not sure my vacation brain is ready for this one 3mo

Ruthiella Love the photo! I think this will be entertaining enough when and if I get around to it! 3mo
jlhammar I finished this one the other day (still need to get my review posted) and I felt much the same. Love the pic! 3mo
charl08 I'm wondering if I even noticed the eye on the cover when I read it. 🤣 Great pic. 3mo
Chelsea.Poole Lovely photo 😍 3mo
Megabooks Sounds really interesting and I love the photo! 3mo
LeahBergen Fab pic! 😆 3mo
BarbaraBB @LeahBergen You‘re back! Hope you had a great time! 3mo

#BookReport 34/22

The fish was okay for me but the other two I adored. I am really digging the #Bookerprize2022 longlist. The tagged one is my favorite so far - I think.

Safe travels Cindy!

TrishB Good week 👍🏻 3mo
squirrelbrain Glad you loved the 2 Booker books! 3mo
IndoorDame Cool! The tagged book is on my list for next month! 3mo

Suet624 Are you going to try reading 3mo
BarbaraBB Yes I think so @Suet624 I‘ve heard good things! What‘s your favorite so far? 3mo
BarbaraBB @IndoorDame I hope you‘ll enjoy it too! 3mo
Suet624 I was so-so with Trust but I know you‘re trying to read the long list. There have been so many good ones on the list this year - I guess my standouts would be The Colony, Maps, and the Trees. Working on Booth now. Haven‘t read them all but I‘ve enjoyed these. 3mo
