Moominland Midwinter | Tove Jansson

I didn‘t count these in my midyear ratings because they feel incomparable. But I‘m deeply in love and so glad I finally checked them out! They‘ll be in the upper echelon of my 2025 favorites, for sure.

CBee What order did you read them in? I found an article that actually says reading them out of order is best. I can‘t seem to find The Great Flood though 🤷‍♀️😔 3d
monalyisha @CBee I haven‘t read them all but I started with Midwinter! 3d
monalyisha @CBee If, in my reading, I come to feel as though I‘ve made a grave misstep, I‘ll let you know. 😅 3d

CBee @monalyisha sounds good! I started with Moominsummer Madness. Here‘s the article I mentioned: https://www.fatherly.com/entertainment/moomin-books-reading-order 3d
willaful @CBee I've never seen that one either.

IIRC, the chronology is kind of odd. I started with Midwinter too and it was a great choice for me as a child

shanaqui I think I remember just reading Moominland Midwinter when I was a kid, you tempt me to get all of them and read them all! 3d
CBee @willaful it‘s much harder to find than the others! 🤷‍♀️ 2d
quietlycuriouskate I have so much love for these books! 🥰 2d

I saw this story today on Facebook when I was scrolling through my newsfeed and it inspired today‘s haiku.

because he lost his mama

For June‘s #BookishMonopoly, I landed on “Literary Classic” and couldn‘t decide which one of these to choose. Several of you recommended one or the other, so I decided to read both! Winnie is a true classic treasure that I adored. 🥰 And Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, though a bit slow, still gave me the heebie-jeebies.😬
@AkashaVampie

PurpleyPumpkin Both are great classics in ENTIRELY different ways!😅 1w
MemoirsForMe @PurpleyPumpkin I went from warm and fuzzy to creepy town! 🤣 But I‘m glad to finally check these off my list. Hope you‘re having a great summer so far! It‘s finally warming up here. 1w
PurpleyPumpkin I bet! These are total opposites and both are very good. It was super hot here at the beginning of this week. But now we‘re back to cooler temps. I‘m just hoping those 3 days weren‘t our entire summer!😅 Glad it‘s warming up in your area.☀️ 1w

MemoirsForMe @PurpleyPumpkin Glad your heat wave is over. Hope you get a little summer weather. We‘re now in June gloom, but the sun is peeking out more each day. I‘m still behind on my letters and slowly catching up. 🤷🏻‍♀️📝 (edited) 7d
AkashaVampie Yay... I still need to listen to Jekyll & Hyde 7d
MemoirsForMe @AkashaVampie It was still a spooky read, even after seeing so many movie adaptations. 6d

Nice book but only 3.5 stars. I like the idea, but it seemed that the child felt too much pressure to “choose” their pronouns & words for the day. A better way the adults could have dealt with it is explained that the child was still valid even if they couldn‘t find their “words” for the day. Still, a good book for introducing children to the concept of pronouns. ⬇️

IriDas I should add that it was also nice for there to be an acknowledgement that pronouns are not necessarily a permanent structure. That they can be fluid and that‘s perfectly fine too. The kid‘s stress just stressed me out. lol. 2w

As I'm reading all this illustrator's work we have in our library, I'm just in awe of the art and the detail put into this book. With very few words, the picture really tells the story in this book. It's basically what happens outside your home while you sleep in the winter. Just beautiful.

This was a beautiful stunning book. Its the story of how an Inupiaq family survived on a boat trip in the Arctic. It explained how the mom sewn all the warm clothes for the crew and what they ate to survive in a cold unwavering environment. Artwork is just wonderful as the story itself.
