Goethe's Faust | Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

This month I chose Faust! It was my first pick. My second for the month is The Satanic Verses and since I didn‘t have a book for June, Rushdie made it on the bracket, too.

CSeydel Very nice! 3d
DrSabrinaMoldenReads What are the directions for this? Thanks!! 😊 3d
GingerAntics What do you mean? You just pick your favourite book each month and add it to your bracket. I have a fiction bracket and a nonfiction bracket. I‘m not sure there are any hard and fast rules. @CSeydel has the black bracket. She‘ll be able to tell you if there are any hand and fast rules. 3d

CSeydel Hi @DrSabrinaMoldenReads ! The bracket is just a fun way to rank the books you read during the year. Each month you add your favorite book to that month‘s space in the bracket. Then the books on adjacent space “compete” - you decide which one you liked better, and it advances to the next round. There are two wild card spaces in round 2, to even up the matches. No rules, no prizes - whatever criteria you want, it‘s your bracket. 2d

This was so enthralling and wonderful to listen to. I highly recommend it. It has the weight and feel and Shakespeare, but the language is far more modern. The translator did an amazing job of keeping the rhythm of the original German poetry in the English.

Bookwomble And Samuel West and Toby Jones are both such great actors. I bet they were good in their roles! 3w
GingerAntics @Bookwomble absolutely brilliant! They really brought it to life. I adored every minute of it. 3w

This has been on my TBR since 2019. I started it after finishing Herod while donating plasma today. I‘m already 77% of the way through. It‘s fast paced. It‘s compelling. It has the feeling of Shakespeare, with far more modern English. This translation has done a marvellous job of keeping the rhythm of the original German poetry. 100% recommend so far. Would love to do this as a group read at some point. I just wanted to share this brilliance.

GingerAntics Thanks Dr. Quinn for putting this book on my radar! #Goethe #Faust #DrQuinnReadingList #poetry #play #classicliterature 1mo

julesG Had to read and dissect/interpret it in school. Both parts. And, if course, we had to look at other works where a character struck a bargain with the devil. 1mo
GingerAntics @julesG he is a German author, so that makes sense. Yeah, we get Shakespeare and if you were lucky, you MIGHT have been introduced to a little Mark Twain. That‘s about it. Everything else was modern. Then again, this is America. No one would stand for a man striking a bargain with the devil. It might corrupt the children. 🙄 (edited) 1mo

julesG I think we read some Marlow too. Apart from Shakespeare. 1mo
GingerAntics @julesG oooh I read some Marlow in grad school. I‘m trying to remember which ones now… 🤔 🧐 1mo

More accessible than I expected and with moments of humor that reminded me of Shakespeare. Mephistopheles as a poodle is an image I won‘t soon forget! I knew the story from the opera, but I‘m glad I read the play. #readYourKobo @CBee

🚲......❤️

Surprisingly tough prompt, but reminded me I should read this some time😂

Is there a classics challenge/event on Litsy?🧐🤔

julesG Feels like a lifetime ago that I read this one. 13mo
Dilara I don't think I've come across a classics challenge as such on Litsy. I'd be interested though 😇 13mo

Weekly Report

Wilhelm Meister is going slowly, I can't seem to get into it. SaGN is rather wordy and dense in a different way, but fun. And the short stories are a nice late night read.

Sorrows of Young Werther | Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

Mehso-so

Well, that was rather depressing. I also think Goethe is a bit too philosophical for me to truly enjoy. I appreciated this story of love gone wrong, but I can‘t say I enjoyed it. Additionally, the narrator read clearly but also had the perfect voice to put me to sleep, so I headed out for a walk to finish it.

📷: Here‘s a picture of a very happy beagle to go with the unhappy ending to Werther‘s story.

dabbe Da cutest beagle around! Looks like you're being taken on the walk, not the other way around! 💙🐾💚 2y
Graywacke Love your happy pup! 2y
Daisey @dabbe We take turns. 😂 Sometimes she excitedly leads and sometimes I make her continue on our way. Never a dull walk with a hound checking out her surroundings. 2y

Daisey @Graywacke Thanks! We haven‘t had much time for long walks lately, and it was a beautiful day, so we both very much enjoyed it. 2y
SamAnne Yeah, I would prefer the company of your Beagle to Goethe! 2y
dabbe @Daisey From the once-owner of two greyHOUNDS, I totally agree! 🤣😍🤗 2y
MariaW Why do you think there was a “Werthermania”, it being fancy to commit suicide due to a general longing back in the days after the book was published? Because most readers were depressed after reading it. 🙈 2y
Daisey @MariaW I read about that when I first looked up the book and thought it was ridiculous, but after reading it I understand how someone dealing with unrequited love could decide to copy it. So depressing. 2y

Goethe wrote this tragedy of extreme infatuation in 1774 to deal with his own experience of unrequited love.
