Filipino-American society is explored in this tender story about a woman‘s journey from torture in the #Philippines to a new life in California.
Hero is her name and she became my hero while reading. How she copes with her past and her trust issues. Her relationship with Rosalyn, her family and her friends, the many dialects that separate them, the food that always unites them. A lovable read.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Stacked, since my husband is Filipino-American. However, it‘s his grandfather who emigrated here. 2y

We think of the Vikings as a strictly Scandinavian phenomenon. But they went ALL over. And their descendants made big strides here in the US. OTOH, in their non-battle mode, they were farmers and traders. Herman covers a vast array of subjects and time periods. And details a zillion battles. ⬇️

BarbaraTheBibliophage The broad scope was both the best and worst about this book. I wanted more of so many topics. And about 1000 less battle descriptions. Herman is a scholar, but I wish he‘d narrowed his focus instead of over promising. For me, this was on the low end of “Pick.” 3y
AlaMich Battles are so boring to read about, IMO. 3y

Susanita I was astonished at every stop on my cruise in Northern Europe that the Vikings were mentioned. Scotland, Ireland, France. France! Seriously? It was so much Viking everywhere, by the time we got to Norway as the last stop, it was almost an afterthought. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Susanita Yes, they are everywhere. Russia, Italy, Iceland. Very culturally unique! 3y
Cinfhen Cool choice for prompt 🥰 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen I was easily halfway through this one before I realized it worked for a prompt!!! 🤪 3y
Cinfhen Hahaha 🤣 3y

Book 2 but I haven‘t read book 1 yet! Still I want to buy book 3! The covers are great! Bright and bold to really catch your eye. Hopefully I can get to it soon!
I‘m trying to reacquaint myself with my TBR while on a book buying ban for the month.

It is the only book I have physically with #heartinthetitle and it is a book I dislike. An English Professor friend of my mother's gave it to me when I was in High School, though, and he wrote in it, so I keep it. #17booklove #day24 @jess.how

Libby1 I absolutely hated it. I read it a few years ago for a book club, so it hadn't been forced on me as a teen. I have read a lot of bleak and difficult stories, many of which I enjoy and find sustenance in. This, however, I just found to be boring and awful. Why didn't you like it? 7y
Seshat Same as you, @Libby1 , I found it boring and awful. I wasn't interested in any of the characters. 7y
GinEyre22 This was forced on me in 8th grade and I hated it. The entire class hated it so much that the line "THE HORROR, THE HORROR" became a running joke for the rest of the year. 7y

Nebklvr Better than Animal Farm... 7y

I don't know if this book was awful because my professor was awful or the other way around. I even listened to Kenneth Branagh read the audiobook and it didn't help. #HeartintheTitle #17booklove

OrangeMooseReads This is an awful book. I forced myself to finish it and wished I hadn't. 7y
DGRachel I loved it, but I'm weird. 😉 7y
Skeebies05 My high school class had a mutiny and my teacher just let us watch Apocalypse Now instead:) 7y

LectricSheep I love Heart of Darkness, but the audiobook is one of the ones I keep on hand to listen to as a sleep aid. I've never made it out of the Thames on that audiobook. 😅 7y
DeborahSmall I loved it too @DGRachel 💕 7y
MrsMalaprop Me too @DGRachel & @DeborahSmall, but I studied it at school 20+ years go, so maybe had the benefit of detailed analysis. Wonder what I'd make of it today? Too many other books await.... 7y
azulaco I hated this book in high school. Tried to re-read it a few years ago, and still hated it. Yawn. You're not alone, @Mindyrecycles! 7y
Reviewsbylola It caused me serious issues in college the first time it was assigned because I hated it. I don't even think I could finish it. I thought it was the worst book I had ever read. Then it was assigned in a different class maybe a year later. I was so scared. But then I ended up appreciating it and maybe even enjoying parts of it a little bit. 7y

#17booklove @jess.how #heartinthetitle I haven't read Heart of Veridon yet. I won it and the sequel from a book blog giveaway ages ago. The author bio says he grew up in "deeply rural North Carolina" which may very well mean spittin' distance from me.

This challenge reminded me to be pissed at my brother for permanently "borrowing" Joe Hill's Heart-Shaped Box.
