I loved this book primarily because I love Marina Abramovic. It tells the true story of Marina‘s art, so singular & intriguing, focusing on her time sitting at MOMA for months staring into people‘s eyes & the long lines of people waiting for the opportunity to sit before her. It covers a wide range of her events. I appreciated hearing about her parents. Through it all there is the fictional story being told of several attendees of the MOMA event.

BarbaraBB I never knew this book is about Marina. I love her art so much! Stacking! 1mo
Suet624 @BarbaraBB I didn‘t realize it either until @Jas16 sent it to me. You‘ll like it. 1mo
CarolynM I liked this one more than I expected to. I thought some of it was a bit pretentious but lots of it was really good. I think you‘ll like it too @BarbaraBB 1mo

Suet624 @CarolynM Pretentious? I‘m curious about that. 1mo
CarolynM I can't remember the details and I don't have a copy of the book any more, so I can't give you chapter and verse, but I think it was that some of the discussion about the significance of the artwork was a bit much for my taste. I felt like the writer was trying too hard with some of the descriptions. 1mo
Suet624 @CarolynM interesting. I can see how the character of Levin and his music might have felt that way. I‘m so in awe of Marina that I may not have seen the sections on her as pretentious. I just find her courageous and one of a kind. 1mo
Jeg I remember this book , not all the details but that I did enjoy it. 1mo
Suet624 @Jeg ❤️❤️ 1mo
Jeg Just checked I read it 8 years ago for book club and yes I did love it. 1mo
Suet624 @Jeg I‘m really glad you liked it as much as I did. Honestly, I didn‘t realize it was published that long ago! 1mo

Well this quote caught my attention….

BarbaraBB Scary 2mo
Amiable My birthday is April 21. I cringe every year because a lot of horrible events have happened in history during the week before—Waco, Oklahoma City, Columbine, Virginia Tech, the Boston Marathon bombing, the fire at Notre Dame, etc. … if we make it to my birthday without a major tragedy I usually breathe a sign of relief. 2mo

Suet624 @BarbaraBB I agree. 😩 2mo
Suet624 @Amiable that‘s so intense. I had never put it together that so many things happened then. Why does that happen???? 2mo
Suet624 @Bookwormjillk yeah, my thought exactly. (edited) 2mo

Today it‘s snowing. A year ago Vermonters were joyous because there was actually sunshine in our state for the solar eclipse. I miss that day. It was spectacular. So today I‘ll see if I can buy an iPhone from a local store before the prices increase (I hate you know who) and I‘ll read this book that I can‘t get enough of.

BarbaraBB Snow! Is that normal for this time of year in VT? 2mo
sarahbarnes This sounds good - stacking. And I hear you on the iPhone. I need to get one, too, but keep putting it off. 2mo
Suet624 @BarbaraBB spring is cruel around here. It‘s not unusual for it to snow even later in the month after the daffodils have come up. 2mo

Suet624 @sarahbarnes I have an iPhone X that used to be my son‘s phone. 😂 he‘s upgraded twice since then. 2mo
Hooked_on_books I hate him, too. 2mo
marleed Dang I was just noticing how much more often my iPhone needs a charge and was trying to figure out if I could steal away a weekday to upgrade my phone before I deeply regret that I didn‘t. My days are book solid for over a week and I‘m afraid I‘ll be too late. 2mo
Suet624 @marleed they actually had a promotional deal going. It was as if they had no idea what was about to happen. I got a 15 at a ridiculous price. 2mo

#Two4Tuesday

1) I love a good museum. The Blasket Centre is a museum of the Blasket Islands and the stories of its inhabitants until the last one left. Dunquin, Ireland. I‘ll also give a shout out to the Portland Art Museum. It‘s a fine way to spend an afternoon.

2) The tagged book was on an #AuldLangSpine list a few years ago.

Thanks for the tag @TheSpineView

Want to play @Blueroseis @LiseWorks @PageShifter

TheSpineView You're welcome and thanks for playing 9mo
LiseWorks Oh dear, I don't do museums. Mostly because they are far from me. I prefer the museum of nature. The outdoors. 😏 9mo
Kimzey Ohhh, I went to the Blasket Centre last year! They did an excellent job using material culture and oral histories to tell the stories of the islanders. It was a beautiful day and we ate lunch outside looking out at the ocean. I wish I could go back and spend more time there. 2mo

4+/5 ⭐

Non mi ha reso Marina Abramović più simpatica (che non è il suo scopo, essendo una biografia), ma decisamente più comprensibile.

It didn't make me like Marina Abramović more (which wasn't its goal, being a biography), but it did help me understand her better.

(Picture: me sitting on Abramović's "Chair for Human Use (III)" in front of Monet's "Le bassin aux nymphéas" at the Fondation Beyeler, Riehen)

Recently I‘ve been thinking about whether art has to have a perspective to be art. This novel looks at a piece by real-life performance artist Marina Abramović that is all perspective. In 2010, she sat all day for 75 days in a gallery and stared directly into the eyes of anyone who sat across from her. This feat of physical and emotional endurance is just incredible. The story focused mainly on one fictional character very moved by this, but ⬇️

Megabooks I enjoyed the parts more where the author dove into Marina‘s thoughts and feelings. She did a great job in mirroring the tension building through the 75 days. A very thought-provoking #audiobook! 3y
BarbaraBB I‘ve been meaning to read this. Great review 🤍 3y

Moony Marina is such an impressing woman. I read her autobiography. Such an intensive life. 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I definitely think you‘d enjoy it! 👍🏻 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen agreed! I‘m still actively thinking about it. 3y
Megabooks @Moony I‘ll have to add her autobiography to my TBR because she is a fascinating person. She was on Finding Your Roots, and that was really interesting. 3y
Megabooks Oh and thank you both 😘😘 @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB 3y
vivastory What @barbarabb said, I have been meaning to read this. It sounds fascinating. Thanks for the tag! 3y
Centique My daughter wrote a paper on Abramovic and her most controversial exhibition, Rhythm 0, for her art history class. It was mind blowing to read about it. I must get to this soon! 3y
Megabooks @vivastory I think you‘d love this! 3y
Megabooks @Centique that‘s fantastic! I doubt you could talk about her art in some classrooms around where I live. Her pieces are insane, thoughtful, and phenomenal. Her POV is so intense. 3y
