“Later I would see that I was wrong about Leidy, wrong to think I wouldn‘t need her and that being a mom herself hadn‘t changed her in a way that would help us deal with Mami. I was wrong to believe the stories we‘d been told about ourselves: that I was the only one bright enough and aware enough to have some kind of plan.”

IriDas Oh my god. I loooooooooove this book. It was the most important book I read in university. I have never connected more with a character in a book. 14h
shortsarahrose @IriDas It‘s almost painful reading this at times because I see so much of me Freshman year of college in this. Like I want to hug Lizet and reassure her but also tell her she‘s an idiot (which is also probably how I‘d react reading my old LiveJournal posts from my freshman year 😆). 14h
shortsarahrose (Though also recognizing that I had things easier than Lizet because of my own white privilege. My own background is probably closer to Ethan‘s). 13h
IriDas @shortsarahrose Same, but because I‘m from such a redneck family, there were so many crossovers even with her family and mine. I also wish I‘d read it my freshman year because then I would have seen that college was not designed for people like me, that I‘d always be a square peg, and I might have been able to deal with it better. Instead I felt all the same anger and committed all the same missteps. 12h

Have the day off (yay!), but still had to wake up early to go to the dentist (boo!). At least I can now spend the rest of the day doing whatever I want - starting with a coconut butter latte and some reading 📖

Mehso-so

A family saga centered around young runaway Felice, who is drop dead gorgeous but insistent on punishing herself for a traumatizing loss she experienced. Avis, her mom, is heartbroken and loses herself in the tenuous work of baking. The dad struggles with health, how to navigate brokeness and feeling adrift, and Stanley - the stable& sensical older brother- who just is always overshadowed by the phantom of his sister. The family reunites in hope

At one point as a #longtimefed I was pretty familiar with the Miami airport, whether as the destination or a transit point. I also spent a long day at the airport greeting arriving participants and getting them onto the right shuttle bus. For another conference, my room overlooked the main runway.

Anyway, in addition to the sandwiches from La Careta, I also like the artwork on the walls.

TheBookHippie I liked it too. Been years since I‘ve flown in there! 4mo

4.75⭐
•This book explores the nature of sociopathy and the moral complexities surrounding the act of killing. It challenges your understanding of sociopaths and their motivations, asking provocative questions about justification and morality. But it does it entertainingly, putting a unique spin on a typical thriller and it leaves you plenty to contemplate.
•Allyson Ryan‘s narration was very well done…she really made this character come to life.

I‘m in a cozy mystery mood. A young Cuban American mother reluctantly moves to the affluent Miami suburbs to be closer to her in laws. And you guessed it - gets tangled in a murder investigation. What I enjoyed was the peak into Cuban American culture and food.

I recently (finally) started watching Dexter: New Blood, which is a solid continuation after a couple supremely disappointing seasons of the original run. I remember enjoying the first book, but having no urge to continue the series.

PaperbackPirate I'm about to start the final season of Dexter! 8mo

Bookwomble I loved the Dexter TV show, and like you read the first novel and felt that was enough. 8mo

“While we ate, Mami sat as far from us as she could. Omar couldn‘t get off work, I kept slurring, even after Leidy kicked and kicked my shin under the table each time I forced out the excuse. Dante crawled around on the floor next to her, moving from cousin to cousin, begging to be lifted. I kicked Leidy back and said it anyway - Next year, you‘ll see - to Neyda, to people who‘d been whispering about my mom‘s outburst, her door-slamming . . .”
