Fabulous collection of Angelou‘s poetry- and surprise! This collection included Life Doesn‘t Frighten Me, the subject of a childrens book I planned on reading next! #authoramonth #mayaangelou #bookspinbingo #dogsoflitsy

#poetrymatters Aug 13: popular
And Still I Rise by Maya Angelou is a popular poem.
Born Marguerite Johnson in St. Louis, Missouri, Angelou had a broad career as a singer, dancer, actress, composer, and Hollywood‘s first female black director, but became most famous as a writer, editor, essayist, playwright, poet, and civil rights activist.
I ❤️ Maya Angelou!!
P.S., the poem Phenomenal Woman is not in this poetry book. But that‘s how I think of her, think of each of us, representing the different shapes and shades of wisdom, strength, beauty and love, phenomenally.
#poetrymatters - March 8: laugh
In celebration of International Women‘s Day, I chose Maya Angelou, who was not on a poet but a pioneer, educator, a civil rights activist.
This is an excerpt from Still I Rise. The full poem: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/46446/still-i-rise
Paul McCartney said the song was symbolic of “the black people‘s struggles in the southern states”.

I love this small( 100 pages) book that carries so many powerful thoughts. In addition to the inspirational cover poem, it contains Phenomenal Woman and Caged Bird which I can read over and over. #blackauthors #blackhistorymonth
Caged Bird
By Maya Angelou
“The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

Life Doesn‘t Frighten Me
By Maya Angelou
“Shadows on the wall
Noises down the hall
Life doesn‘t frighten me at all
Bad dogs barking loud
Big ghosts in a cloud
Life doesn‘t frighten me at all.
I go boo
Make them shoo
I make fun
Way they run
I won‘t cry
So they fly
I just smile
They go wild
Life doesn‘t frighten me at all.”

Still I Rise
By Maya Angelou
“You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still like dust, I‘ll rise.
Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
‘Cause I walk like I‘ve got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.”
#poemsbeforephones
Phenomenal Woman
By Maya Angelou
“Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I‘m not cute or built to suit a fashion model‘s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I‘m telling lies.
I say,
It‘s in the reach of my arms,
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I‘m a woman
Phenomenally,
Phenomenal woman,
That‘s me.”

Maya Angelou forever. #shewill and #shedid
This poem has been on my mind all day. Hope you all feel a surge of that indomitable spirit and overcome today - especially those of you dealing with prejudice and barriers 💕 Kia kaha.
I rarely read poetry. I feel like it's impossible for me to get into. After seeing Netflix documentery about Maya Angelou I was so impressed by her that I wanted to try to read her poetry. I read the whole book but even though it was pleasant I didn't really get it. I think I'll try poetry again after a few years. Maybe it gets easier in time. 🤔
As I look back over the tragic events of last week, it saddens my soul. We need more inclusion, #love & #kindness. Let‘s spread some love & light with #beKINDspines stacks! Share an inspirational message via your stack 📚💖
freedom is a constant struggle
and still I rise
god help the child
speak no evil
behold the dreamers
the sun does shine
Wishing you a great week ☀️

Nice work at my alma mater. Proud of them. (I mentioned this to my husband and he snorted and said "were they triggered by it?" and I think I'm gonna file for divorce)
Oh and I forgot to share a picture of this lovely bookmark my husband bought me today along with the history book. It says: “Let nothing dim the light that shines from within.” - Maya Angelou. It‘s so pretty I might have to take it with me when I go on vacation in a few weeks.❤️
Today is the first day of @spinesvines #diversespines focusing on woc and today's prompt is book quotes so I'm going with a classic.
You may shot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I'll rise
@ephemeralwaltz @Andrew65 @WomanistBibliophile
I'm trying to read poems.
Not succeeding that well.
How could I get under the poem spell?
What is the secret they hide so well?
Why can't they just come out of their shell?
Do you have any tips for me to tell?
🤔
Spent my day doodling this and re-reading some of the poems.
"Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise" ❤️❤️

Have you guys watched/listened to today's Google doodle video? So beautiful and powerful.
Go NOW to see and hear Google Doodle's animated honor of Maya Angelou's 90th birthday. One memorial evening, the school librarian and I took a group of students to hear her perform. https://www.google.com/logos/2018/maya/maya18.html?hl=en
I reached 500 Litfluence and 750 followers! Yay! Onwards and upwards 😁
Happy reading everyone!!
This poem makes me feel confident in myself, even though I am neither phenomenal, nor woman 😂😂

After 20 years of wanting one, I have finally decided what my first tattoo will be. Either the whole first verse of this poem from Dr. Angelou or just a line like the one above. This poem has served to remind me through all of my struggles, no matter what they were, I have always made it through. Do y'all have literary tattoos you'd like to share the story behind? If so, tag me on your post and use the hash tag #LitTat. Image: Google Images.
What a lovely poem! I haven't really ever read poems but I saw Netflix documentary about Maya Angelou and I have been interested in her work ever since. There are some clever poems in this book. ❤
Found this yesterday. It makes a wonderful train ride read. 😊📚
I love that the #birthdaychallenge is getting me to read books I usually miss #1979

Day 15 of #marchintoreading #shepersisted
I've not yet read Elizabeth Warren's book, but I certainly plan to. Some of the other strong, persistent females (real and fictional) that come to mind for me: Maya, Malala, Gloria, Offred, Sofia, and Dorothea. ✊️
From an exhibit at the Science and Industry Museum, Chicago.
My BFF and I have decided that we'll get through the next four years powered mostly by spite, determination, and our Party of Two Book Club.
Almost ready for the #WomensMarch tomorrow! Sad I'll be missing the readathon but read some books for me and I'll march for you. ✊🏼 Bringing Maya with me. Wish I had the artistic talent some of you have but this will have to do. #Resist
