The Book of Cairo: A City in Short Fiction | Ahmed Naji, Hassan Abdel Mawgoud, Eman Abdelrahim, Nael Eltoukhy, Areej Gamal, Hatem Hafez, Hend Ja'far, Nahla Karam, Mohamed Kheir, Mohamed Salah al-Azab

A collection of stories from modern-day Cairo. As with any collection, a mixed bag, and as a UK reader I didn‘t always understand what they were driving at. The blurb describes the stories as ‘tentative glimpses...[as] writing directly about Egypt‘s challenges is often too dangerous‘.

Gridlock (the lives of characters stuck in traffic) and ‘An alternative guide to getting lost‘ (ghostly bureaucracy & trying to leave) were the standouts to me.

rockpools One of the stories is titled ‘Whine‘ so there‘s my #Booked2020 #WhineOrWine Only 3 more to go! @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen 3y
Velvetfur That book sounds so good! Stacked 👍🏻 3y
rockpools @Velvetfur If you‘d like it, I can post it to you? Email me I need to do a post office run for Mum sometime in the next week or two, & it‘s a v slim book! (edited) 3y

charl08 I thought it was a great collection: holding out for book 2 (if they can do it with other cities, why not Cairo?). Also tempted by 3y
squirrelbrain Keep on ticking off those challenges! 3y

I‘ve been faffing around over my #WhineOrWine pick for #Booked2020, convinced whatever I chose wouldn‘t be that great. But I‘m so happy to report that this memoir was an absolute hoot. Two corporate Sydneysiders take the plunge and move to the Hunter Valley to run a vineyard. Hilarity ensues! I now want to go stay in one of their villas and, of course, meet Helga the pig 🐷

CarolynM How wonderful😃 Stacked. 4y
JennyM @CarolynM it‘s really fun. I came across it rather randomly while flicking though a magazine at the hairdressers 💁‍♀️ It makes me want a tree change of my own! 😊 4y

This was pretty cute! I picked it up for the dog on the cover, but fell in love with the writing and characters. A bit cheesy and cliche, but a fun distraction and cute romance.

Another good week! I finished both “A Song Below Water” and “Final Girls-” both ⭐⭐⭐.

58% into “Once Upon a Wine”-it‘s a cute palate cleanser, especially after the twisty “Final Girls.”

@Cinfhen

Cinfhen Woohoo 🎉 you‘re doing great!!! Almost done with your #whineorWine 🙌🏻🍷 4y

#weeklyforecast:

I‘ll probably finish “Home Before Dark” and “Dreamland” this week. Would like to get to 50% of “A Song Below Water,” as well.

I also want to start a title for another #booked2020 prompt, before the month is over. Can you guess what the prompt will be? 😜

Cinfhen Hmmmmmm, #WhineOrWine 😂🍷🥂 4y

I think this is probably a really good read if you love non fiction and reading about wine. I‘m not a massive NF fan and prefer drinking the wine 🍷.
It was entertaining though and I did learn some new stuff.

squirrelbrain 🤣🤣🤣 4y
MsMelissa Yes, I would prefer the actual drinking to the reading about drinking too 😂 4y

TrishB @Cathythoughts not a bad read, just wasn‘t totally engrossing we‘ve just put some 🥂 in the fridge for tomorrow! 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Sounds like a story we‘ve seen told before, but kind of new angle. Sorry it wasn‘t more compelling! 🍷 4y

I picked this up on #Scribd the other day in hopes of using it for #ReadingEurope2020 #Kazakhstan
Having recently read and LOVED Audrey Murray‘s travelogue I‘m finding this one a bit disappointing.
Monisha Rajesh lacks the warmth, humor & charm of Audrey...this book is more whiney and judgmental 🙄
I will admit, there are some funny moments

Librarybelle I have this one because I liked the cover! 4y
BarbaraBB That is too bad, the title is very appealing! 4y
Cinfhen I‘m sticking with it but it‘s not gonna be my favorite read @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB 4y

rockpools Oh no! I had high hopes for this one - but I‘m not a fan of whine... 4y
Cinfhen I seem to be the #unpopularopinion @RachelO / maybe I‘m the one being whiney 🤪 4y
rockpools @Cinfhen Doubt it! I do need a #whineorwine book though, so maybe I‘ll try it anyway. 4y
Cinfhen Good idea!!!! ✨💡💡💡✨ 4y

I am not sure about this one. I was expecting more humor, less sermonizing, and more epiphanies than what existed in this collection of essays by Cathy Guisewite, the creator of Cathy comics, which I enjoyed ages ago. I agree on most of the demise sections and relationships with children and aging parents. This might be for an older audience or something just felt off.

#booked2020 #whineorwine MC who whines

UwannaPublishme I‘m probably one of those older people that may get this book. 😆 I really do want to read it. I loved her comic strip for ages. 4y
NeedsMoreBooks @UwannaPublishme I liked her comics too but she seemed whiny in this 🤦🏻‍♀️ I hope you like it 😄 4y

I think in normal times this book would have been a total hit for me, but these are not normal days🙁The whole world of wine enthusiasts and sommeliers just left me with a bad taste😝These people are so consumed with pursuing a degree that is basically meaningless ( I know sour grapes 🍇 Im being judgmental) loved the writing, but couldn‘t get onboard with the concept. #WhineOrWine #Booked2020 #ItsMeNotYou 4 🌟for the writing

BarbaraBB The art of wine seems so irrelevant these days. Wine is to drink, to console us, to relieve us a bit of our anxiety. I can imagine this book is not what it would have been a month ago. 4y
Hooked_on_books I‘ve always found wine enthusiasts pretentious, so I loved what I read about a study that was done about taste. When red food coloring was added to white wines, the subjects in the study used red wine descriptors to describe the flavor undertones! Ha! “Tobacco, cherry, oaky.” Whatever, dude, they‘re grapes! 4y
Cinfhen Ha!!! Exactly @Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB let me just have a drink 🍷 4y
TrishB I‘m trying not to judge some of the books I‘m reading knowing it‘s me not them! I totally get what you mean. 4y
Cinfhen You REALLY get me @TrishB 😘😘😘😘 4y
