Pickpick

This is between a pick and a so-so for me but I‘m going to be kind as it‘s #abookbyafirsttimeauthor #pop23.

Every review I read compared this to The Virgin Suicides and I can see why, with its chorus of young teenagers speaking in the plural first person. It has a real sense of place in steamy Florida, which I loved. However the individual more recent stories of the women didn‘t connect for me, and actually distracted from the underlying ⬇️

squirrelbrain …menace stalking the young girls‘ neighbourhood. This is where it became a bit Bunny-esque for me, so if you liked that (I didn‘t) you may also like this. It wasn‘t clear whether the women were having flashbacks, seeing real-life monsters or fictional monsters. Or maybe I just didn‘t get it and it was something else entirely! 🤔 in short, loved them as girls, not so much as grown women. 2y

TrishB I didn‘t love Bunny, will probably give this a miss too. 2y
batsy Funny, I just came across this book on twitter and see your review! 😁 I liked Bunny quite a bit, so am pretty intrigued... 2y
Ruthiella Interesting! I loved Bunny but didn‘t like The Virgin Suicides. I‘ll put this on my list. 2y
sarahbarnes I just came across this book and got on the list for it at the library! It sounds like my jam. 2y
TheEllieMo This one wasn‘t for me; I think the author has a lot of raw talent but it needs honing. Like you, I found the individual stories of each of the main characters added nothing to the book. I did find the use of the first person plural interesting, not something you see very often 2y
squirrelbrain I saw your review as I posted mine @TheEllieMo - we‘re the only two to have reviewed it. I think there were too many girls and, because they were a ‘chorus‘, it was difficult to separate them into individuals for those later passages. 2y
jenniferw88 I liked Bunny, so stacking! 2y
Librarybelle Intriguing…Bunny-esque. I liked Bunny! 2y
Cortg Hmmmm 🤔 This one sounds like a hit or miss depending in the reader. Bunny was a weird one and I liked it but I think I likes it because it was so “different” 2y
LaraReads Does sound intriguing! 2y
Cinfhen Definitely a #BorrowNotBuy for me 🐰 2y
BookwormM Just finished this and feel the same I haven‘t read Bunny but the later stories and the monster confused me 🤣 2y
