I don't quite understand how I missed this one, this is one of my favorite authors. At any rate, it is so serendipitous that this book came up on my Audible because I am seeing Antigone staged in a week! I'm looking forward to understanding the story by learning it with Natalie Haynes, she's my all time favorite reteller of myths. 💜

Karisa Her work so great on audiobooks too! 💗💗💗 2w
HettyG @Karisa for some reason she isn't reading her own work on this one... the narrator is fine but I love the author's voice! 2w

Natalie Haynes‘s retells the story of Jocasta and her family by synthesising several Greek myths. Borrowed from Libby for the 2nd time, I knew what was coming but I was still surprised. It was how the tension is built as the story switches between two timelines, one telling Jocasta‘s story, and the other tells the story of her daughter Ismene, but what stands out is how Jocasta, the wife of Oedipus, is put back into centre stage of her own story.

5 joys from my weeks, and a wonderful quote from my current read, The Children of Jocasta by Natalie Haynes, so true 🙂

A modern retelling of Sophocles‘s Antigone by a street theater company right under my windows.

Do plays count?
🎭 Antigone by Sophocles - ca. 440BC

Does part of the Latin Bible count?
📔Vulgate - ca. 4th century AD

Other than that 🤔
Probably a Medieval book on either religion or medicine I needed to read for my studies in History. At a guess ca. 12th/13th century AD.

mrsmarch I mean, if we‘ve read the Epic of Gilgamesh, we‘ve pretty much read the oldest book in the world, right? 8mo
julesG @mrsmarch Right! I hadn't thought of Gilgamesh when I posted earlier. Amazing how old the story is and it's still being read. 8mo
BookmarkTavern Both totally count! Thanks for answering! 8mo

I love a retelling of a Greek myth, so really enjoyed this! I thought Haynes‘ take on the story was interesting, and I enjoyed hearing from characters with less of a voice in other works.

I was surprised at how much I liked this one given that I‘m only vaguely familiar with Antigone.
