Pickpick

I laughed, I cried, I was excited, I finished it. I still think I liked the second book better, but this is a great main trilogy. I'll be taking a short break before I fully jump into A Court of Frost and Starlight; I'm working on some of my other library check-outs. This one was just so satisfying that I feel I need to have a little pause to let it sink in and really sit with everything that's happened over the course of these first three books.

#LittensLoveSJM #TOG Book 2 Ch.7-9: Celaena has decided to look into what the King‘s up to. Just because she finds out his plans doesn‘t mean she has to be the one to stop him. Right? Haha, she‘s funny because she‘s trying so hard to stay out of the intrigue. But the intrigue keeps finding her. I felt bad for Kaltain - she has been used and abused by Perrington and - although she may have had bad intentions, ⬇️

StayCurious I can‘t help but feel bad that she‘s rotting away in that prison. I‘m intrigued about what Celaena will say to Archer when she sees him. How to warn him and also gain info? He probably won‘t trust her since she works for the king. 19h
LiseWorks Yeah, I feel bad for Kaltain, too! She is an addict who lost her way, and now Perrington is abusing her even in prison. 19h

5feet.of.fury It really shows Celaenas good nature that she feels empathy towards Kaltain. 19h
BarkingMadRead I can‘t wait to see how it goes with Archer 19h
Roary47 Poor Kaltain. 💔 Also excited to see what comes next. 18h
Littlewolf1 I still feel really bad for Dorian. He feels absolutely betrayed, and Celaena has never been really good at accountability, she‘s working on it, but she‘s not there yet. It‘s hard for me to discuss Kaitlyn though because this is a reread for me as I loved the series and I wanted to go through it again. But I will say she‘s going through it right now, and no one should have to live that life. 17h
mcctrish @Littlewolf1 it‘s a reread for me too but I can‘t remember anything much. I want to say Perrington is still going to visit Kaltain to exert magical influence over her and keep her befuddled ( not sexually exploit her which it kind of reads like) @LiseWorks I feel like her addiction is in reaction the the pressure of the magic on her and I vaguely remember the king and Peri talking about further uses for K somehow 15h
Butterfinger I know Kaltain was a brat, but I can't stand to see her so broken. I hope she is rescued before those headaches kill her. Before, the reader could tell she was being manipulated by Perrington. Now, they are being maliciously secretive with drugs or magic to keep her under their thumb. 5h

I think this book should have been longer and that way have more fleshed out characters.

I think atmosphere & world could have been more intriguing but now everything felt rushed.

The plot was good enough but too rushed.

#LittensLoveSJM #TOG Book 2 Ch.4-6: I liked in these chapters how we got glimpses into Celaena‘s past - we learn a bit more about Sam, and a few other characters from the underworld Celaena was a part of. Poor thing is so against being a part of something bigger - she revolts at the thought of fate. That she could be something bigger than herself. She just wants to get her freedom and hide out for the rest of her life. ⬇️

StayCurious And who can blame her after what she went through. But life has other plans and deep down she knows it. Are we sad that she‘s pushing Dorian away? Are we worried about the trouble Roland will bring? Do we like Chaol for her? I‘m torn. 2d
LiseWorks I'm sad she is pushing Dorian away. Roland is trouble. 2d

mcctrish Realistically Chaol is a better partner and could maybe help her in her quest, Roland is bad news. The triangle grates on me but truthfully they are all too young to be thinking about love matches 👵🏻😆 2d
Read4life I honestly go back and forth between Chaol and Dorian. Roland seems like trouble. 2d
StayCurious @mcctrish I was surprised Chaol had such an important job at 22 2d
mcctrish And he‘s never killed anybody until Cain #notbelievable 2d
Butterfinger I think of them as three friends who care so much for each other. Goodness, she was getting mad at that doorknob, but it reminded me that we didn't have any more positive scenes of magic since those flower petals at the opening of her tent. Other than Nemehiah was doing. 2d
mcctrish @Butterfinger yes, on all counts. So the magic in/around the castle was worked before the ban and is stronger so still present. Those onyx rings the king and Perrington wear must be similar magic. I wonder if the hit list contains anyone who has magical inclinations ? 2d
Littlewolf1 @LiseWorks I agree, he was always there for her and, i know she is doing it to protect herself and hime, but its leaves him so confused. 23h
Roary47 I agree with @mcctrish I think Chaol is a better more logical partner for her and I‘ve been #TeamChaol this whole time. I noticed that she stated she did miss Dorian as a friend. @Butterfinger I laughed so hard at the doorknob. It reminded me of the doorknob in Alice in Wonderland (So I love the meme). Roland is definitely someone we should keep our eyes on 👀. (edited) 22h

#LittensLoveSJM #TOG Book 2 Ch.1-3: Ooh Celaena is playing a dangerous game. How long can she keep sparing the King‘s targets? One of them is bound to come back from the dead at some point. But I also admire her bravery. Will she ever be able to tell Chaol and Dorian? Can she trust them? I am intrigued to learn more about this Archer character. ⬇️

StayCurious Will Celaena be able to keep her mind focused around someone she used to like and admire? I was surprised she wasn‘t completely open with Nehemia. If anyone should know what she‘s up to it should be her I‘d think. 3d
mcctrish It‘s Dorian and Chaol are so squeamish over the deaths it‘s funny 3d

StayCurious @mcctrish seriously - never saw a more squeamish captain of the guard 3d
5feet.of.fury I kind of wish we weren‘t told so early that she wasn‘t killing them, it would have been neat if that was a big reveal down the line 3d
LiseWorks I am worried that she will be found out. Do you think Chaol suspects something ? 3d
Roary47 @5feet.of.fury I agree, I wish we wouldn‘t have known so early. I also feel relief that she isn‘t actually killing them. It helps me solidify who I feel she is after reading the first book. She is making allies that can hopefully help her if this plan goes south. (edited) 3d
Butterfinger @5feet.of.fury @Roary47 I was sort of glad it was revealed in the 2nd chapter. I guess I am squeamish like the boys, and I just didn't like the thought of a character who I like doing something so ugly. She seems to me to be scared of being part of any rebellion. I want to know why. Is it to protect her friends or what she experienced as a child? And, I further think she is being rebellious by allowing the targets to escape. 2d
Littlewolf1 Hope you don‘t mind, but I‘m jumping in this with you guys kind of last minute. I‘ve been meaning to do this re-read for a while and got stuck after book one, so this is perfect timing. 2d
StayCurious @Littlewolf1 welcome! We‘d love to have you! 2d
BarkingMadRead I was glad to see that she wasn‘t killing them, I hate that she has to pretend to Chaol and Nehemia 2d

Loved it. So good. I do feel like a reveal from the end of book 1 kind of got glossed over, Bri suddenly didn‘t care as much about it, maybe she didn‘t really make it make sense but the rest was good. It wasn‘t shocking, did not reinvent the genre, but it was lots of fun. More adventure/politics focussed than ACOTAR, more romance focussed than The Cruel Prince & a solid read if you like either of those.

Quick and fun! Vivid battle scenes. Still not great writing, but I‘ve stuck around this long!

Still here! I want to know what happens in the end, even if I have to read the phrase “vulgar gesture” 15 more times!

I am squarely in the zeitgeist! Maas is a talented world builder but her writing was hilariously terrible. A fun one!
